Do Collingwood need to enter a rebuild phase?

Dustin Martin was not in the best 2 players on the ground in a final in his first 4 seasons, so there's one 😆
In his 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th final he was in the best-2 players on the ground in every one, and by the end of his 7th final had a Gary Ayres Medal and a Norm Smith.

But yeah.....their first 7 x finals were neck and neck ...bahahahaha.

I said a couple of years ago that 2026 would be the year where Daicos breaks through and has his first year as undisputed best performer of the season. I think this year he really will crack it. However he hasn't yet.
It will be interesting to see if the likes of NWM, Sam Darcy, Callaghan, Will Ashcroft, Thilthorpe take further steps forward as they have the athletic and skill based tools to really spike in their performances.

They all have more upside than Naicos as he has been at a higher level more consistently prior to ROund 1 2026....but if they spike again in their performances it could be an interesting battle as best young player of the season. I still think Daicos in 2026 will remain behind a few others like Bont, Butters, Anderson, Cameron and Rowell.

When Dusty was the same age as Daics is now, he was still sleeping with the lights on

I love this.

Daicos to remain BEHIND players he has outperformed in every one of the past 3 seasons.

What is your matrix for rating players, because it surely can't be on field performance?

Interesting they've got to go to year 8 of Martin's career for a 'like for like' comparison with Daicos after year 4.

But telling that Dusty and Richmond weren't even good enough to win a single final prior to year 8 of Martin's career...

Shows just how lucky Daicos was to walk into a mature ready for finals team.

Be interesting when Collingwood fall if Daicos can cope.

Yeah, a team that finished 17th in his draft year, and were apparently in for a minimum of 5 years of Carlton 21st century type mediocrity.

In a team with apparently no other decent midfielders to steal votes off him.

You've got to get your narrative consistent...

Hey I never said that but fair to say they were a mature team.
Reality was they should have been contending

Mature footballers although Daicos was only 23.
WHE was mature and knew his role.

Compare those blokes to who Martin came in with.
LOLOLOL.

IN 2012 Cotchin won a Brownlow.

Deledio was 25.

Edwards was 24.

Jackson had won a best and fairest at Richmond.

So a midfield of Martin, Cotchin, Deledio and Edwards with Grigg (24), Tuck (31) and Jackson (26) rotating through couldn't win a final, but a midfield of 30 plus year olds in Pendlebury, Sidebottom and Crisp, with Adams and De Goey (both regularly inhured) the only prime age players, should have been contending?

Get your hand off it.

Gee very generous but when Martin came to Richmond a 20 year old Cotchin wasnt comparable to a 34 year old Pendles.

So now we're throwing in some other handy players on the Pies list, who were hardly superstars...

If only Richmond had other stars such as Rance, Riewoldt and Newman on their list at the time....

Oh boy.

Key forward Riewoldt 22
Key Back Rance 21

Yep would have been bullying their opponents

I don't know whether you're deliberately going back to 2010 or not.

But by 2016, when Richmond not still not won a final, Riewoldt was 28 and Rance was 27....

You’re dismissing Martin due to not playing finals in his first few years.
Not everyone walks into a mature group like Daicos.
In your view I take it Selwood is far superior to Daicos he’d won 3 premierships in 5 seasons.

Oh. The year the racism scandle disrupted the Pies momentum for one season.

Buckley was sacked and they brought in a new coach and topped up at rhe draft and with trades.

Why?
Collingwood played in a GF only 3 seasons prior
Highlights how great Nic Daicos has been if you think Pies 2022-26 is comparable to Geelong 07-11....and the good news is that there were doubts on Geelong 2011 as they lost GAJ.

So good signs for Pies 2026, who are also being written off...might do a Geelong 11 and storm back and grab another flag
