Probably a more balance approach i guessDerksen is a genuine swingman as I've mentioned in other posts. With our lack of depth in key talls at both ends he makes a lot of sense.
IMO he is a potential long term Gov replacement. Think this is the last year Gov will be on the list as we just can't rely on his body holding together so having a guy like Derksen who can play both ends of the ground is pretty valuable with the landscape of our talls. I think they'd be hesitant to bring in a genuine KPD (e.g. Phillips) with the trio of Weitering, Dean, HOF looking like a great long term combo (supported by Young). A guy like Phillips would be on the list for one year and then cut whereas Derksen would actually have the chance to last longer. I think you take a swing at the stumps at greater potential with spots like this. It's why we are most likely going for Lij again over White- you simply have to take the greater potential than a purely depth player. Haynes injury recovery uncertainty also plays into this decision I feel.
