2007 BigFooty Phantom Draft - November 2nd Kick Off.

I'm surprised to have seen Farmer slide so far, but I was never hoping to get him because I knew he wouldn't make it past HBF. He's shown plenty of versatility this year playing as a small back in the Champs (absolutely ripped off as far as AA selection goes), then as a small forward with Calder and through the midfield too.

Apparently Adelaide were interested last year and almost pulled the trigger and I can't imagine he's done anything to go down in estimations so if he's around at 30 then depending on the sort of player we'd taken earlier I wouldn't be surprised to see him go there.

I am enjoying this thread. Well done to all.

FWIW I reckon the long breaks between selections adds to the drama.

And finally, if you are all trying out for a job as a real recruiting manager at a real AFL club, you have all got one thing right - your claim that "I was amazed he was still available at my pick. I had him [fill in a lower number here] in my list." is just what the real guys say. :D:D:D

#36 Carlton Mitchell Farmer - Calder Cannons

I must say that I am amazed Mitch has fallen this far. I almost feel like I am missing something with this kid, although I don't know what it is. Perhaps his height is an issue, but at 180cm, I don't see this as a problem.

Mitchell will bring to Carlton something that we are really missing - someone that can play all over the ground. He could play that BP role, and play on guys like Davey, Farmer and Lovett, play in midfield as a run with type player, or play an offensive game in their, or play up forward, and give Eddie Betts a "chop out".

Also, he is Mr. Intensity. Gives his all, will go in and win the hard ball, and he is also a good linkman when playing through the midfield as well. I also think that he could play some AFL footy next year.

I like this kid as well, but essentially ur paying pick 36# for an 180cm back pocket, very top aged player. Looks lost when moved into the midfield. So really should only be able to cut his teeth in the AFL as a small defender. Coaches will immediately try to mismatch him with a tall forward. Dont get me wrong, i really like Farmer and the things he brings, his right foot and intensity are 1st class. I just cant see an AFL club spending to of a high pick on Farmer myself.

Pick 37 - Kangaroo's - Sam Reid - 7 November 1989, 185cm 75kg. Queensland/Zillmere

Don’t think he will last anywhere near this in the real thing, his real rating has been masked by missing the championships and DC through injury, I doubt recruiters would let it slide till here. But I’m happy :D

The last thing I wanted to do was take a guy who has been injured after the Roo's recent bad luck with a few listed player in that regard. But really it's nothing too serious, and wasn't a soft tissue problem, so he was purely to good to refuse.

Athletic midfielder who can play all over the park. His best attribute would have to be his positioning, he wins a mountain of ball purely because he has a knack of "being in the right place at the right time". He has neat disposal and can play an inside and outside role imo.

With a few pre-season's under his belt, he’s going to be your typical 84kg running machine off of a wing or on ball.

I think, unlike juniors he will move into a centre square role in the future, once he builds the physique, purely because of his ability to win the ball 1 on 1 versus his opponent.

Very happy with my draft in whole.

 Didn't look too lost against Dandy at MC Labour park. IMO Farmer is a far better AFL prospect than your pet project McDonald :p

And the joys of opinions , hey Gilly.

So u have Farmer penciled in as an AFL midfielder then ???

Pick 38 - Kangaroo's - Sam Reid - 7 November 1989, 185cm 75kg. Queensland/Zillmere

Nice pick Pykie. I had him in line for my previous pick (35) but just saw Hall as having a little bit more development in him.

I am enjoying the Farmer debate btw. I suspect he will go to a club that prefers production over potential and have an Andy Collins type career - West Coast anyone?

I agree mjp, he is probably the conservative and sensible persons choice.

Exactly..:)

Potentially....but put it this way, I have him pencilled in as an AFL footballer ;)

So potentially he is a midfielder, ( I doubt it ) but essentially he will be a 180cm BP if he is to make it at the next level ( Something i reckon he will ). His height is also a small query.

I loved his form at the champs, outstanding. Especially the game in the snow at OO. So it all depends on wether u think he will make it as a midfielder as to what pick is about right for him.

I cant see it, so a pick in the 30-40 range is where i see him. (Around the mark of where HBF selected him)

Just cant see myself spending a late 1st rounder or early 2nd rounder on him when i can grab a genuine midfielder or KP player prospect.

To me he's not as I see far more upside in Reid.
Yeah, another short midfielder isn't exactly what Carlton need at pick 36.

I'm hoping for another Joe Anderson or someone marginally shorter like Reid or Whitecross at pick 36.

HBF has a huge fetish for short footballers. ;) :D

That's all very well, but IMO you sometimes just have to stop playing with rules of thumb and pick a guy you think is a better chance to make the grade.

Steven Baker is only 179cm, and he's a pretty hand type for the Saints. And I believe that Farmer could also contribute up forward as well, given his versatility.

Not to mention a certain Brownlow medallist wearing the brown & gold is only 174 cm (officially).

Still happy to take Farmer at #36 ahead of Reid.
Have a think about the rankings from the UCRT meeting on the weekend.

I reckon it's a pretty good pick. There won't be too many blue chippers left at 36 on Nov 24. Farmer has a very good chance of forging a very solid AFL career. Whether it be as a BP or mid-fielder which is not beyond him IMO but possibly more the run-with type who will hurt the other way. Plenty of guts and backs himself to win the footy in close or 1 on 1.

Lots to like.:thumbsu:

Great pick Pykie, but just something i noticed, you put the wrong pick down, you put 38, we have 37

Woops, thanks for that. Fixed.
