Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

The likes of Melbourne, Collingwood, West Coast (obviously), Brisbane, Sydney, Richmond etc all have.

Worth noting? ...

I think getting Cousins would be the worst thing our club could do.

There are certain things that can't be said, but drafting someone like Cousins would make the Hawthorn brand look about as respectable as... well, we'd look like crap!

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

I'm undecided about drafting players from other clubs. But from an outside perspective I like the idea that a club 'breed', so to speak, their own players and be known for those reasons. I don't particularly like what Port Adelaide, St Kilda and most of all the Bulldogs do and continually recycle players every year. It kind of feels dirty. I much prefer a club that has started from scracth and built a team bond and developed together.. it seems more natural. I think I'm still talking about footy too.. lol! :)

Re: No way do we want cousins!!!

Are you still in favour? Good, reliable and clearly remorseful boy is Ben Cousins, by the sounds of things! What's that thing they say about old dogs and new tricks?
Yes. He hasnt missed any of his Rehab Appointments, what has he actually done this time? Given the media the slip?

Re: No way do we want cousins!!!

Why are some silly little Hawks supporters wanting to get Cousins if he is avialable? I dont understand that..pretty absurd if you ask me!

For anyone to push for Cousins to joinn the Hawks shows a lack of understanding of what Clarkson and the Hawthorn Football Club is trying to achieve.

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

We haven ruled out redrafting Thurgood and Little either. Dont mean its gonna happen. Lets have a thread about it if its a distinct possibility. Not just a maybe because no one has said we wont.!!

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

I have been out and partied with Cousins. Am I supposed to hide this fact because it might make me sound like a know all? My friends know him well, not me, but I have been given a fairly detailed picture of the bloke (and the issue ) whether it annoys you to read it or not.

Cousins is a champion and would be a huge asset to our club.

As for the booze bus, so WHAT !!! I have blown the cops on my bike a few times, does this make me a bad person? Our road laws are extreme and over sanitised anyway to cater for a population with an average age still applicable for a Seniors card. I don't like to fight with my own on here but there are always two sides to the story.

You obviously watch a current affair and believe every word. Me, pffft I make up my own mind and on Cousins this will be a tragedy if we don't grab him.

It would help if those narrow minded fools at the TAC looked at drivers licence reform instead of simply throwing 'speed kills' out there all the time.

Most countries in western europe have far fewer deaths per capita then Australia. Futhermore they force drivers to learn what a car is capable of by trained experts in all weather conditions, unlike Australia where Auntie Flo teaches teenager billy how to drive to the supermarket and back again.

and even though Australia has some of the worlds best roads in the world, in europe the prescribed safe speed limits are often 140km plus, and traffic just flows... Just goes to show that TAC has got it wrong again..

My 2 cents

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

btw I'm for giving the Cuz a chance in the brown and gold as long as hes signed in under an iron-clad contract. You'd wanna know that hes serious about playing the game and not the nightclub-life though

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

If we get Cousins then we make the grand finals adn if were in the grand final then were probably a 50/50 to win. I recon that were in the box seat togget him with the best facilities and coaches and young gun list in the AFL and were efore Colingwood in the draft and with all the Tassie million weve got the money to pay him. Well clean him up of the drugs and at teh Waverly well set him up in a house and hell be away from all them drug dealers in Perth sucking him in to takeing drugs ans spiking his drinks and all that. Well look afterhim because were a profesional club with top management like we looked after Lekkas when he nearly died playing for us and now look at him hes better and playing soccer. Weve defenetely got the best doctors to fix him up.

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

I am all for looking at the best talent available to add to our talent base. Would raise more questions about our culture but I would consider cuz, however, can anyone else see the hypocracy by many of our supporters that we wont consider anyone else in the same age bracket because it "doesnt fit pelchins plans" yet because of his talent we would consider cuz.
Think about where you stand on bringing in players from other clubs hawthorns supporters and be consistent.

Thurgood and little.........please spare us, we wasted a spot on our list last year with thurgood and little proven he cant cut it.

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

I recon that Pelchin has already cut the deal for us to snap him up in the draft and hes told Cousins to go and hide in USA to scare of them other clubs and reportors like Hutchy that are gunna try and track him down.

We need Cuz and hell top us of just nicely. I can see him and Hodgy and Mithc cutting them up in the middle and giveing the footy lace out to Ruffy and Budy. We need Cuz to make us the premiers next year, hell be awesome for us. And hell get over them drugs stuff and with him with us with Clarkso and Jeff and Robbo there will be no way hell get back on the gear with our strict club and top leasership.

:D LUV YA STORY! :thumbsu:

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

Does anyone think if Cousins came to Hawthorn he would be in the leadership group? Why does anyone think the youth would look up to him? These kids are 18 + not 5 years old!!!

I would know coming into Hawthorn his past, and wouldnt look up to his off field acts. These kids arent stupid, they would look up to his positive aspects for example the way he trains and certainly the way he plays
Players don't need to be in the leadership group to influence others on the list.
It would only take one player to be slightly influenced by Cousins for our club to have a problem.
Much the same as it was reported that Everitt was a bad influence on Thurgood.

I can't really understand why we'd even think of taking Cousins.
People questioned our philosophy of wanting a clean and younger Thornton for a position we seem to need depth in, yet we throw up Cousins name and stipulate 'we'd put him on a one year contract and watch him like a hawk' when he is bringing undoubted talent, but a truckload of concern to a list that already has an abundance of midfield talent.

I just don't think the risk is worth it. Especially with where our list is at at this point in time.

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

Don't want him and don't need him. We can bring home a few cups without him. He has probable lost the WC a few cups. I don't doubt that had he been in the WC mid field all this year it could have taken the pressure of the others and the WC could of been futher up the ladder. Was he the reason that Judd left???

Mmmm thoughts to ponder do we need someone with that baggage coming to our team????

Cheers

ROBINSON, MELBOURNE
October 26, 2007 01:15am
BEN Cousins' manager has reassessed his opinion on the career of the disgraced former West Coast Eagle after saying last week he feared it was over.
"It's not a matter of if (he will play again), but when," Ricky Nixon said last night. "And probably in Victoria."
Although clubs have publicly distanced themselves from Cousins since his arrest and after police dropped a charge of drug possession, Nixon last night said clubs had told him they were interested in the Brownlow Medallist.
Collingwood has not dismissed the notion of claiming him in next year's national draft.
"I read all these newspaper reports about clubs saying they do not want him, that's different to what they're saying to me," Nixon said.
Hawthorn, Essendon and St Kilda told The Advertiser they would not take Cousins to their lists if he were eligible. Others would not comment.
Cousins' future is in the hands of the AFL Commission, which will discuss the issue on November 19 at its next meeting.
To play again Cousins, and the team he would play for, would have to convince league bosses that he was mentally and physically fit enough, and free of drugs.
Geelong president Frank Costa said he believed Cousins was capable of a return to professional football if given a fresh start at a new club.
"To get away from the environment where unfortunately he was tempted too much and given a red-hot go, like any other young human being, you're entitled to another chance," Costa said.
The Geelong president suggested Sydney as a possible club for Cousins to resume his playing career.
"They were able to take boys from other clubs who for whatever reason weren't happy with them," Costa said. "Take them up to Sydney and with a strong leadership program they've got there through their players, they were able to turn those boys into really good team players." Hawthorn,Essendon & the Saints all told the Advertiser they will not take Cousins to their lists if he were eligible:thumbsu:

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

Personally I wouldn't like to see him at Hawthorn in '08. It just wouldn't play out well in the media, with sponsors and with development of our "family" club image. If we wanted a senior role-model around the club to inspire our kids I'd rather we tried to talk Nathan Buckley out of retirement :p

Just while you are on the red card, H2F, I will have another cheap shot.

Just announced on Channel 9 that he arrived in LA, got on a cocaine binge and ended up in a general hospital for overdose

Fantastic bloke. Just what we need at the club.

But then, H2F, to use your own words, you can make up your own mind.

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

If todays story is true then IMHO Ben Cousins wont be available to play for anyone in season 2008. AFL should deregister for at least 12 months.

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

I was his biggest defender, and I still think he is a very talented footballer, but his career is over.

It is sad that somebody with so much talent is in the midst of a terrible addiction, and it is to be hoped that he recieves rehabilitation and gets his life back.

If this latest story is true, he will be deregistered, and it will be interesting if any club takes a chance on him for 2009. If any club does, he will be the most drug tested athlete in history.

The afl doesn't need to deregister him - who would be stupid enough to pick him up - it would be a PR disaster for any team.

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

Good on most posters here, that have been able to:

1. Assess objectively the character of Ben Cousins
2. Hold the best interests of HFC

Cousins ODs on drugs, Sampi returns unfit and injures himself in his first session...Nothing surer.
