Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

Just while you are on the red card, H2F, I will have another cheap shot.

Just announced on Channel 9 that he arrived in LA, got on a cocaine binge and ended up in a general hospital for overdose

Fantastic bloke. Just what we need at the club.

But then, H2F, to use your own words, you can make up your own mind.

Sadly, I don't think H2F has one to make up.

Re: We havn't ruled out drafting Cousins yet ...

The afl doesn't need to deregister him - who would be stupid enough to pick him up - it would be a PR disaster for any team.

Dont under estimate the stupidity of some AFL clubs.

Cousins could claim by early December he is fully cured and try and gain a PSD selection.

Secondly the AFL need to send a strong message.

Oh thanks for that.

I don't underestimate the stupidity of some afl clubs - but no club will go near him now despite how desperate some clubs are to have a "player" like him.

Re: Is there a spot of Cousins at the Hawks?

I assume you meant spot for Cousins? ha ha .

Anyhow.

I really don't think so. He was given so many chances at West Coast. But it didn't stop him finding trouble again. He obviously has had no problem lying to his coaches and medical staff in the past. Why would our recruiting staff be any different?

Can you imagine what happens if he is taken by the Hawks and then runs foul of the law again?

Re: Is there a spot of Cousins at the Hawks?

Do you mean a spot FOR Cousins?

I would definately look at him for 2009. You could pay him next to nothing for his services and providing he becomes clean (which hed have to to rejoin the AFL IMO) he could become a good role model for the new young players against taking drugs. Plus I think a change of scenery is his best chance at coming good.

If we are honest, we are stupid to think that drug taking isnt happening at the club (every club in all likelihood) and someone who has been through the worst could be of immense benefit.

On top of this you also pick up a 30yr old absolute gun midfielder who is arguably one of the top 10 players in the league when fit and firing.

Despite this I dont think we will get him as we wont have any decent picks in the draft next year and he will probably be gone before we have a chance.

Re: Is there a spot of Cousins at the Hawks?

I don't think you guys need a player with Ben's history given what we all know but can't say out aloud.

Re: Is there a spot of Cousins at the Hawks?

Haha.. that heading is totally going to incite trolls!

I'm unsure about drafting Cousins, if the chance were to arise.

Pro's:
  • Quality footballer
  • Roll model in terms of professionalism i.e training.. ect.
  • Replace hard work of Shane Crawford when/if retired.
  • Lesser wage.
Con's:
  • Prior drug user.
  • Risk of further 'foul' play.
  • Potential defamation of Hawthorn brand.
  • 30 yo.
Pending on the circumstances when the situation arises, otherwise I'd be unsure at this stage!

Is there a spot of cousins at the hawks?

Yes party boys exist at hawthorn
Yes some brilliant footballers at hawthorn
Yes some trouble with the cops at hawthorn

These things exist at all clubs. Is there a spot for him at hawthorn. If i was coaching and with the proper measures in place than yes there is a spot for cous at hawthorn.

At very least he can make the boys go and go and go:D

Re: Would the Hawks be interested in Ben Cousins?

Over the next 12 months ....

IF Ben admits he has a serious problem
IF Ben stops blaming others for his problems
IF Ben undertakes the necessary rehabilitation process
IF Ben can divorce himself from bad influences he calls "friends"
IF Ben can stay out of trouble and public scrutiny
IF Ben can manage total abstinence from illicit and illegal substances
IF Ben can commit to a club for at least 2 years under extreme guidelines

Then MAYBE there is a chance he may play football again.

Personally I think he has little chance of attaining all of the above, and feel it will be an extraordinary achievement if he ever plays the game again.

Do I want him at Hawthorn?

no.

Re: Would the Hawks be interested in Ben Cousins?

I dont think we need Cousins at all. Id rather Hawthorn went after someone like Gehrig.

Put the big fella in the goal square, Williams in 1 pocket, Buddy and Roughie at half forward and send Boyle down back. I think that is a better option than throwing in a known basketcase when mid-field is not our problem.

Re: Would the Hawks be interested in Ben Cousins?

If JK has his way, he won't be at our club. IMO he would be better of doing some modelling, etc. He would be very good at that..Or maybe he could advertise underwear!!!!...lol..Maybe Bonds singlets & underdaks...
Whatever he chooses, I hope he recovers and gets on with his life, and turns it around..Maybe he should have tattooed "Life wasn't meant to be easy" on his abdomen....
Good luck Ben...:thumbsu:

Re: Would the Hawks be interested in Ben Cousins?

He will play football again, and next year when he announces he is coming back to football, watch every Melbourne based club chase him.

It will be bigger than the Judd auction, and he will go top 10 in whatever draft he enters.

I have said this before, if he was committed to staying clean, and had stringent clauses inserted into his contract, I would have no problem with Ben Cousins coming to Hawthorn. If he comes back, he will be the most drug tested athlete in history.

He will only be 30, is extremely fit, is very much like Robert Harvey in how he plays, and he could have another 2-3 years left in him. Remember, in his comeback game he had 30 plus possessions. He could be the difference between a club being a finals contender, and winning a premiership.

I think we are all jumping the gun, he has a very serious health issue to overcome, and only when has got his life back together, should he contemplate coming back to football.

I for one, hope he comes back better than ever, because I used to love watching him play.

He wouldn't get too many underwear gigs with that ridiculous crap tattooed over his guts.
