Jordan Russell

What do I think about this kid? I think he's a shit footballer
Will he be in our best 22? Nope, he wont, not our best 32 either
What position will he play? Probably floating on a flank for the Ants

I think Jordan Russell has become the new whipping boy!

The kid has got all the attributes to be a very good afl player other than confidence in what he can do. Why don't we reserve judgement until the
end of the season. I'm tipping a much improved player in Russell, it wouldn't be the first time someones career has really blossomed under a new coach. Russell is the exact type of player that would struggle under Pagan and would have any confidence ripped from him.

Time will tell.

But give hime a chance.

Problem with Russel, as evidenced by the views of him, is he is one way or the other..

Walker would play well consistantly but ehn have some garbage disposals (if you can see what Im saying) where as Russel will have a the odd flash of brilliance, and then just vanish...occassionaly popping up with a brain fade.

Have seen him do a VERY IMPRESSIVE snap in the forward fifty, but really needs to show us that he is worth perservereing even if he does take more time.

Right now we are working with nothing.

Most of you would know that I am a big rap for the kid, but having said that I do admit that he has quite a lot to prove in season 2008, not only to the supporters and staff of the Carlton Football Club, but also to himself.

JR has all the attributes that are necessary in order to become a good AFL player - size, skill and pace are all very good at least. Does nothing spectacularly, but does everything quite well and has a well-rounded game that we can work with and benefit from in the long term. The only real deficiency with his game is that his decision making and poise at times can be quite poor. However, I'm not all that worried about it, as it's not as if this is something that cannot be rectified with hard work, and I think that it's a major focus of his on the track. JR is also very enthusiastic and is in a great frame of mind, which is excellent to see.

As yet, he hasn't really found a position for himself at AFL level. Has been tried in the senior team in various positions around the ground, and whilst he has shown flashes of promise in each position, is yet to really do something consistently. From what we have seen, it seems to me that his best position is as a leading half forward flanker who pushes into the midfield at times to present another option for the running defenders streaming forward out of the defensive 50. He was tried there a few times in season 2007, and I think that's where he showed the most signs.

We have to be patient with JR, just as we were with Simmo. Give him time to find his feet, which I think he will, and we won't regret it.

Good point. He hasn't put it all together as of yet, and might not, but unlike a lot of talented players (eg. Angwin) I don't think it's been through a lack of effort. To me he seems persistent and willing to succeed, however looked to be lacking in confidence out on the field. He seemed to improve that slightly as the year went on, but hopefully with a new coach in Ratten, he will be a lot more confident in 2008 and justify his position in the draft.

What position will he play?
As a lead up HFF.

He played this position in the round 18 game against Collingwood and had 16 possessions, 9 tackles and kicked one goal. I'm positive that we'll see a different player under Ratten and a new game plan because he didn't like Pagan whose game plan was from another era. I feel we have a lot to work with in JR if we get his development right height, pace, skill and the potential to play wing, on the ball(Russell had five centre clearances against the Lions in that shootout) and half forward. Jordan is still green IMO and hasn't received the coaching and game time that is an important part of a players development.

He'll learn alot from Teague and Lappin who were brave players and gun flanker/forward in Lappin who could play anywhere.

Russell isn't a born footballer like Gibbs and Murphy, but there aren't the same number of contests as there used to be and he goes when he has to. Russell's gather at CHB and his one per center and brave spoil contributed to our win against Essendon. Brereton praised Russell's second and third efforts after Croad hit him with an elbow and put him in hospital after Jordan couldn't find his car at training. :thumbsd:

Other flankers and wingman who are considered rising stars aren't inside players.

I have Russell pencilled in for a spot ahead of Wiggins and we will benefit from increased competition for spots next year. I think he could be a contribute like Matt Rosa and get under the guard of a few sides when they'll have to worry about stopping Judd, Murphy, Stevens, Walker, Gibbs, Carrazzo, etc.

God knows we don't want to be positive at this time of year and back our players in on BF.

Thanks TG, Russel has dome some sensational round the body snaps, he does not seem to break lines like walker can.

I was considering Waite-houlihan and even Jackson up forward (Hartlett - by reports is not cutting it) some say edwards is a poor mans fisher.

You seem to have kept an eye on Russel, for mine he really is a stealth player, slipped well under the radar...where do you see him in the forward structure - relative to other potential players?

He played this position in the round 18 game against Collingwood and had 16 possessions, 9 tackles and kicked one goal.
Might be strange to say but that was the first day I started to think that Russell really wasn't going to make it. The game plan was designed to deliberately funnel all our attacks through Russell on a HFF and while he took a couple of grabs and had a number of possessions I thought he used the ball poorly when he got it and without any great benefit to the team. He only seemed to get that much of the ball because the opposition let him.

Exactly, Collingwood saw it as "oh, they're going through Russell, good on them, he wont damage us, give him the ball at every opportunity and more often than not, we'll get it straight back"

And sadly that's what happened more often than not.

If we had picked him up at pick 200 I wouldn't be complaining, but for pick number 9 in the draft if hasn't offered much. Needs to extract a digit or be speared.

Not quite as bad a return as Luke Livingstone at pick number 4 though.

Livo got smashed because Denis the menace wanted his good mate Mick to get to the 300 club and drafted him to blues to help him achieve this. As soon as he got to 300 he retired and left us with Livo as the only option at full back.

A very young and raw kid who got smashed from piller to post which absolutely destroyed his game.

Russell got the same sort of raw deal from Pagan. He would only get limited game time and whenever he did something wrong he was dragged from the game and left on the bench and then dropped for the next weeks game.

How is a player supposed to get any confidence in his abilities and be willing to push the boundries if you get shitcanned for one mistake.

Hopefully with Ratts in charge, he will get a fair go this year and will start getting a lot of game time and build up his confidence.

Russell should try to make a career out of being a great clubman like Bannister, kicking a goal on Buckley and beating Chad Cornes and Brad Johnson in 2007.

Don't support Russell, Walker or Kennedy, just troll Carlton supporters because being annoying and clueless is the only reason you come here.

I watched the first half this evening and Carlton set up with Russell, Fisher and Fevola as forwards in the first quarter.

Russell's possessions and involvement in the first half.

1) Russell sets up Blackwell with a handpass after taking possession in the forward pocket and Luke missed by a hair’s breadth.

2) Russell hesitates, handballs to Blackwell and Fisher ends up kicking a point down the line.

3) Russell marks and kicks to AB, but Davis spoiled Bentick who should have marked and held his ground against a smaller opponent.

4) Russell shepherds for Fev.

5) Fev holds off two Pies defenders and nearly gets it out to Russell who had lost Cox. JR could have run into an open goal from 20 metres and was forward goal side of his opponent.

6) Russell misses Waite after presenting well up the ground as a mobile forward option.

7) Russell roves Bower’s spoil after getting front and square, but is under pressure and can’t get a clean hand pass away. Good roving under pressure.

8) Russell tackles Cox and should have received a free kick.

9) Russell shows good defensive pressure.

10) Russell bumps when he should have tackled, but still put his body in.

11) Russell roves from Ackland’s contest and hits Fisher laces out on the run with his left foot. Russell showed clean hands below his knees, great vision and good speed when running onto his wrong foot.

Goal to Fisher.

12) Jackson kicks an up and under and high kick to Russell who is spoiled by his opponent.

Russell applies good defensive pressure.

13) Scotland handpasses to JR streaming forward out wide on the wing. Russell hits Fev on his left after weighting the kick so Fev can mark in the forward pocket and lose Presti who had him under control.

Russell wasn’t dominating because the game was a tight struggle and low scoring.

Jordan won the ball due to leading hard up the ground running IMO and he didn’t have a problem hitting a target on his wrong foot in the first quarter. Collingwood were dropping players back and Carlton couldn’t find a target inside fifty with no tall marking options. Russell had to lead up the ground outside the fifty metre arc to find the ball and had more of the ball than Fevola and Fisher. Our kicking was terrible all round with Carrazzo and Jackson the worst offenders.

Second quarter

Thomas kicks wide and should have put it out in front of Rocca to run on to like JR did with Fevola.

But we know Thomas is better than Murphy and not Russell and Walker who are shit kicks of the football and decision makers. ;)

1) Russell leads well up the ground, but Simmo bombs it above JR’s head (see aforementioned Walker rule) and earns Jordan receives a free kick after backing back. Russell passes back to Simpson with a good short kick that finds its target.

2) Russell leads up to wing to mark Scotland’s kick and kicks short back to Scotland who had run past to receive the kick. Scotland hits Fev who converts after JR lead up the ground to mark. Possibly a set play to create space for Fevola to lead into after they did the same thing in the first quarter.

3) Thomas drops another mark and Murphy misses a target on his right under pressure with an effort that was worse than any of Russell’s kicks.

4) Russell leads hard up to the HBF to mark and provide a desperately needed path out of a back half who were fiddling with the ball. Good hard running from Jordan to present as an option for the defenders, Jordan passes to Murphy at CHB who moved it onto Scotland quickly. Scotland then kills Waite with a very poor kick and turns it over.

5) Thomas picks up a ball on the half volley like JR did earlier and shows similar speed to Russell on the move. No praise for Russell, but Voss has a wank over Thomas’ effort in the commentary box.

Russell is almost as tall as Fev and has a similar size frame.

6) Russell runs onto a poorly weighted kick from Carrazzo. Carrazzo did nothing but handpass in the first half and sold Bower into trouble with a pathetic hospital ball at CHB. Russell is tackled by Cox, yet stands up in the tackle and handballs towards the boundary line to keep it in play. Russell recovered faster than Cox and should have been paid a free kick after he tackled Cox. More hard runni1ng by Russell and Cox was gone according to Michael Christian.

Bloody umpires don’t do jack unless the crowds yells ball.

7) Russell flies across the front of a pack near the goal square after losing his man on the move and took front position with six players contesting the ball. Waite and Setanta also flew for the ball when they should have shepherded and blocked for JR. Russell lands on his feet and nearly catches Burns on the way out with the ball on the goal line.

8) Russell has taken five marks at the eleven minute mark of the second quarter.

9) Russell ties up the ball at CHB and was wrongly free kicked.

10) Fisher just bombs the ball on the run over Russell’s head with a stupid kick.

11) Russell marks on the move 30 metres out from goal and converts with a kick that split the middle.

12) Burns wins the ball in the middle and bangs the ball forward to Davis. Davis would have taken a chest mark if not for Russell’s brilliant diving spoil that came from nowhere. The ball ended up with Saddington who lost it to Davis and was turned inside out before he snapped a great goal.

13) Another shocking kick from Ryan Jackson that was too high for Russell to mark and put him out of the contest after he had taken front position against Goldsack. The tap on from Setanta who ran back with the flight and set up the Jackson kick was a brilliant flick on that caught both RJ and Lockyer by surprise. But hey, Setanta isn’t a running player like Clarke and playing a running game similar to Gaelic Football. Learning to play a KPP or ruck with body work is a piece of cake and agile man mountains are a dime a dozen at the draft.

Russell didn’t get the ball because Collingwood let him have it, he won the ball by running hard to win it and didn’t turn it over all that often like gandaal and DC stated. Unlike Carrazzo who did nothing but handpass and wouldn’t take the Pies on or kick on the run. Russell at least backed himself in to kick the ball and could hit Fisher and Fev laces out on his non-preferred side.

Jordan’s second efforts were very good in the first half and he had nine tackles in this game.

He presented as well as Fisher in the first half and it isn’t his fault Collingwood didn’t pay him any respect.

I feel Russell will be a better forward option next year with better midfielders kicking the ball and a more open game than he had in round 18. He could be a better forward than Rusling since his second efforts are good, he’s an option up the ground because he can kick with both feet and is better than Rusling when the ball is on the deck. We’ve seen JR snap good goals off one step in games in the past, so we shouldn’t bag him and write him off just yet.

He was too tall for Ryan Cook and too mobile for Cox.

I haven’t watched the second half yet, but I doubt JR did much since the match became the Fev show once again and Fisher only kicked one more goal. Brendan kicked five goals in the second half and the mids kept kicking it to Fevola who was on fire and ignoring other options.

He has to be ahead of Wiggins now.

Thank **** we don't have Pagan at the helm anymore. :thumbsu:

Fantastic stuff TG :thumbsu: Appreciate the time and effort you have put into that post. Brilliant post and a lot of your sentiments there seem unfortunately too true of our teamin 2007.

Russell will be a part of our next premiership side.

I can see him becoming a similar player to Clape who played a vital role in our 20 and two side with his role as a defensive HFF who could convert a chance in front of goal. I think JR could become a better player than Clape because he has good hands in close and good acceleration off the mark, so he will move on ball in games to give our starting mids a chop out when they need a rest.

Nice effort TG. That's how you make a point folks.

If you guys dont want JR we will take him off your hands at the end of 2008 :thumbsu:

I'm actually quite good @ math's and I enjoy it too, but I had the same math teacher from yr 10-12 who I completely clashed with, could not learn from, did not get along with, and as such my grades in math's during those years do not reflect what I was really capable of.

I believe that JR and Pagan probably have a similer story to the above and i really believe that this year under a new coach we will all see a new and very different JR to the 1 we saw under Pagan.

I may be wrong, but thats my take on the situation, atm I have JR on the bench of my best 22 and think he will be more than serviceable for us!

GO JR !!!!

Unfortunately, it seems that what you are saying is very true. I've been reading Kouta's book - it's sad to hear how much unhappiness there was at the club while Pagan was coach. Really really sad to read about it, and quite disappointed. I look forward to watching the younger players develop under Ratts and get back to enjoying playing. It sounds like it was a disgusting to have to play under Pagan.
