Re: Official GVFL thread

He is training at Collingwood according to Fridays Shepp News. From what i read i think he's going to make a decision in the next couple of weeks. Saturdays just won't be the same at the Den if he goes

How old is Saad Saad? Is he ypung enough to possibly get drafted as a mature age recruit of he plays well at Collingwood or just trying to test himself at a better level?
Most backline players in the GV will be hoping he makes it and doesnt come back. ;)

VFL sounds out Saad
Ashleigh Williamson

Star Seymour forward Saad Saad could return to the VFL next year after beginning pre-season training with the new Collingwood reserves team.
The triple premiership forward with Seymour has been training three nights a week with the Magpies under the tutelage of 1990 Collingwood premiership hero Gavin Brown and recently retired Magpie Paul Licuria.

``It's been a good experience, I'm learning all the time,'' Saad, 22, said.

``Gavin and Paul have been really good in giving me lots of feedback, having played at the highest level they are good people to be learning from.''

During his time with the Magpies reserves, Saad has done some running, fitness and ball skills, training as well as playing in a couple of practice matches.

``I've been playing at half-back which is good, it's something different,'' the full-forward said.

Saad said he had been keeping in touch with coach Bernie Haberman in regards to his playing future with the Lions and said a decision was likely to come in the next couple of weeks.

Saad was lured to Kings Park from VFL club Northern Bullants in 2005 by then Lions coach Steve Daniel.

In his three years with the Lions he has kicked 261 goals, including 100 this year, been a Goulburn Valley interleague representative, Victoria Country representative and a key player in each of Seymour's three premiership successes.

While Haberman said he would love to retain the services of the high-flying forward, he is leaving Saad to make his own decision.

``I'm not too concerned with what he's doing at this stage, if he decides to play in the VFL there would be no hard feelings,'' Haberman said.

Rasmussen decides it's time to return to Tigers
Ashleigh Williamson

Rochester premiership player Steve Rasmussen is returning to his home club to play next season, giving first-year coach Daniel Schmidt his first off-season signing.
The gun on-baller had spent seven seasons with the Tigers and was a member of the David Williams-coached premiership side in 1999 before crossing to Rushworth at the start of 2005, where he has played the past three seasons.

``It's good to be back home, there have been good numbers at training in the month we were on the track before Christmas, so `Lenny' (Schmidt) has the boys shaping up pretty good,'' Rasmussen said.

``I think Lenny has been excellent from what I've seen during pre-season training and he has played a lot of good footy over the years so he knows what he's on about.''

Rasmussen will be a handy acquisition to a Rochester side that finished seventh last season, with the former Goulburn Valley Football League interleague representative close to enticing brother-in-law and Rushworth skipper Jacob Perry to join him at the Tigers.

While most sides are enjoying a break from training, Rasmussen is eager to put in plenty of hard work during the rest of the pre-season.

``At the moment I'm playing cricket on the weekends, but I'm really keen for the footy to come around,'' Rasmussen said.

``While it's going to be really hot and hard work during summer training, I need to get myself fit for when the real stuff starts.''

Schmidt is happy to have Rasmussen on board, saying his experience will help the Tigers as they prepare themselves for big things this season.

``Steve is going to be great for the playing group, he will bring a lot of leadership on and off the field,'' Schmidt said.

Rochester's pre-season resumes on January 7.

Re: Official GVFL thread

Has anyone heard how Kyabram and Tatura are going with regard to new recruits for 2008. It seems there is a lot more players in general leaving the area and not as many coming in.. I would have thought they would have been 2 clubs looking to top up with a few players and climb up the ladder a bit.. What clubs should be expected to slide down the ladder based on player movments..
think tat might be holding up the ladder again shinboner. pretty sure they havent picked up anyone. ky have gained a couple but only servicable players so i would think they will be just above tat, again. shepp have slipped from all reports and might be just above these two sides.

Rumour has it that former Ardmona player Brad Lowe has signed at Mooroopna for the 2008 season.... Good pick up and good to see him playing back at his home club.....

Davies joins growing list of decamping Demons

Ashleigh Williamson
Star midfielder Justin Davies has dealt a killer blow to Shepparton United's premiership ambitions with his decision to relocate his family to Swan Hill this season.
Davies, runner-up best and fairest in a Demons team that finished minor premier in Goulburn Valley Football League, will join close friend and former Carlton teammate Callan Beasy at Swan Hill in Central Murray Football League.
Davies said yesterday his decision to leave was based solely on family reasons and a commitment to his wife to reassess their lives after a year in Shepparton.
``It's a tough decision, because I'm going to miss playing with guys like Tyson (Sidebottom) and Matthew (Forys),'' Davies, 24, said.
``But hopefully they're around in 2009 when we come back to Shepparton.
``The family is moving over to Swan Hill for a few different reasons and, while it's tough, I hope the guys can understand why.''
The father of two's announcement is a body blow to the Demons, who are facing the loss of up to eight members of the team which took part in a preliminary final last year.
Ruckman Justin Sutherland has returned to Gippsland with work commitments, while Michael Barlow last week signed with VFL club Werribee on top of the loss of captain Brendan Briggs (Dookie United), Duane Hueston (coaching Echuca United), Stan Koullas (assistant coach of Congupna) and Ashley Round (Barooga).
Demons coach Brad Hazelman said while it was disappointing to lose players of such class and character, he admitted the club could not stand in their way.
``It's disappointing, unfortunately many of the guys are leaving for reasons totally beyond the control of the footy club,'' Hazelman said.
``You can't stand in the way of a guy like Davo, who is moving for family reasons or a Micky Barlow furthering himself or a Duane Hueston or a Justin Sutherland. Those guys are just as likely to walk back into the club again one day. ``It's just going to be another test for our group, some great chances for the young kids coming through.''

Werribee lures Barlow

Shepparton United midfielder Michael Barlow will join VFL club Werribee this year after a stunning season with the Demons. The 20-year-old, who attracted the attention of AFL club St Kilda with his best-and-fairest-winning season, said it was an opportunity not to be missed.
Barlow finished fourth in the Morrison Medal, represented the Goulburn Valley and was a member of the Goulburn Valley's Team of the Year last season.
``I'd never really aimed at playing anything higher than where I was, but a chance I had training with St Kilda probably gave me a bit of a taste for it,'' Barlow said.
``Werribee was keen for me to go there from early on, even before I started training with St Kilda, and they've always been in contact even when I wasn't drafted.
``It's exciting on one hand, but hard on the other because the past two years at United have just been awesome.
``It might just be a one-year thing, I don't know, but I'll always be a United boy and come back there soon enough.''
Barlow, a graduate of Shepparton's Notre Dame College then Kilmore's Assumption College, is studying town planning at the University of Melbourne.
Coached by former Footscray on-baller Simon Atkins, Werribee finished 10th last season with seven wins and 10 losses.
After seven years affiliated with Western Bulldogs, The Tigers will be a feeder club for North Melbourne this season after the Bulldogs joined with Williamstown, following Collingwood's decision to field a stand-alone reserves team.
``I suppose I'm at the age now where I've got to take the chance and hopefully things will work out well,'' Barlow said.
``I'm in Melbourne with uni anyway, so being able to train alongside the guys you are playing with will be a chance for me too.''
Barlow will be able to play for United under the VFL-VCFL ruling when Werribee has the bye.

Rasmussen decides it's time to return to Tigers

Rochester premiership player Steve Rasmussen is returning to his home club to play next season, giving first-year coach Daniel Schmidt his first off-season signing.

Briggs heads to hills

Dookie United's bid to snare successive Picola District Football League titles has received a major boost with the signing of Shepparton United captain Brendan Briggs.
The 26-year-old defender has quit the club where he made more than 100 senior appearances in a bid to turn himself into a forward.
Briggs will be reunited with close friend and former Demons teammate Dale Osborne, who led Dookie to its first senior premiership win last season in his debut year as coach.
``It was a tough decision to make because I've obviously been at United for a long time now,'' Briggs said.
``But I want the chance to relax a bit and enjoy my footy and play a bit up the ground.
``I've played most of my career as a defender and I wanted the chance for a move.
``It's disappointing, but I'm looking forward to the change, I've certainly served my time at United.''
Briggs led the Demons to the top of the table last season and missed just one game through injury after battling chronic hamstring problems for the previous two seasons.
A Dookie fourths best and fairest winner, Briggs said the chance to return was too good of an opportunity to pass up.
``Ossie (Osborne) has done a great job as coach last year and I've already done a few sessions of pre-season training and there's been a good crew on the track,'' he said.
``Hopefully we can have another good year after the achievements last year.''
Osbourne said yesterday he was ``over the moon'' at gaining Briggs' signature.
``To pick up a player and a person of his calibre is just fantastic for the footy club,'' Osborne said.
``Briggsy and his whole family are great club people and to get a guy who has captained a GV side is fantastic.''
On top of Briggs, Osborne said the acquisition of former Mooroopna reserves captain and ruckman Matt Quinlan was also a boost. ``We might have surprised a few people last year, but now they'll be after us, so to add guys like that to the side is fantastic.''

Family ties lure Whyman home

Tim Doutre
Riverine Herald
Former Kangaroo Djaran Whyman has turned his back on East Perth to join Murray Football League club Moama.
After signing with the West Australian Football League club in October, Whyman admitted he had been wooed back to his hometown.
The Echuca-born Whyman has cited his family as a driving force behind the decision.
``I went over to Perth and it just wasn't for me,'' Whyman said.
``I went over for a bit and got the feel for the footy. I did a few sessions with them (the Royals), but family plays a big part in my life and it (Perth) was just too far away.''
Whyman was keen to end any conjecture about his football future, stating the move to Moama was a done deal.
``This is the final decision,'' he said.
``In the end I am happy to be back in town. I was always going to come back to Echuca-Moama.
``I've been back for a few weeks now. I spent Christmas and New Year's here.''
The 24-year-old had previously expressed a desire to return home after his delisting from the Kangaroos and said when his decision to return to the area had been made, Moama was one of the first clubs that had come to mind.
``Right from the start when I first made contact with Mark (Coe, Moama's recruitment officer), they were really good about it,'' Whyman said.
``And when I went to Perth, they were the only club to stay in contact and wish me luck.
``I was always going to come back to this area and obviously I have come back a lot sooner than I thought, but I thought Moama would be the go.''
Last season, Moama finished second-last, winning two from 18 games.
Magpies coach Shannon Keam, who took over from coach Chris Waterson in October, was pleased with the signing of Whyman.
``He's a good bloke, and obviously to come out of the AFL he is going to be a pretty handy acquisition for the footy club,'' Keam said. ``He is going to be good not only for our club but for the league.''

My only thought re Briggs...is why a captain of a premiership aspirant at the tender age of 26 would leave a major league club to join a minor league team?...why couldnt be honest and say the dollars were to good. Really worrying for country footy.

I think you might find there is more to it then that. I think a falling out with coach Brad Hazleman might have occured. I was told Briggs was not going to be captain if he was sticking around at United, thus a bit of tension came about.

think your question on united might have been answered darren. quite a few players lost and certainly a major slip down the ladder. shepp swans might be the only finals team to come out of shepp.

Getting used to new den

First-year Shepparton coach Richard Warburton admits he is still in the process of ``getting to know people'', but he is keenly anticipating making his mark with the senior side come the new Goulburn Valley Football League season.
The Bears resumed pre-season training last night and, while there are not too many new faces on the track, Warburton is excited at the prospect of working with a young developing group of players.
``It's hard at this time of year when everyone is coming off the Christmas and New Year's break, but we are still actively recruiting as best we can,'' Warburton said.
``All you can do is keep plugging away and try and recruit the right type of player for what you need.
``It's great to see the young kids jump on board as there will be plenty of opportunities for them to play senior football this season.''
Warburton is aware the club is at the beginning of a rebuilding phase with a Bears side that has lost players of the ilk of Brent Chapman, Tyson Saunders, Jeremy O'Brien, Anthony Mellington, Sean Harrap and Matt Byers during the past two seasons.
``Players come and go from every club, so you can't avoid that and I'm still meeting new people within the club so it's going to take time,'' Warburton said.
``It's an ongoing thing and I have some new structures and ideas I want to introduce into our game.''
Euroa premiership player and Shepparton reserves coach David Southwell will serve as Warburton's assistant, while Neville Whittaker is undertaking a player development coaching role.
The Shepparton United legend and games record-holder believes he has the right brains trust supporting him to ensure the Bears will have success on and off the field this season, with Shepparton premiership players Terence Tuohey and Jason Wells returning from Congupna to coach the reserves and thirds teams respectively.
``Terence and Jason have been a part of the club for many years and as a player they were respected opposition and know the game very well,'' Warburton said. ``With David as my assistant and Nev helping out players one-on-one I think I have the right people around me to help the club move forward.''
