Who is the best Key Defender of the 21st Century?

He regularly, but not always, played loose. Not free, loose. That doesn't necessarily mean not having an opponent. You can have a less dangerous opponent you don't have to worry as much about to leave you free to engage other contests as you see fit. Sicily does it. Stewart does it. McGovern...

Who is the best Key Defender of the 21st Century?

Of course rance was very good 1on1. Anybody we are discussing is a gun. That is a given. We are talking about the best over 23 years. Scarlet took the better key forward more often than lonergan did when both were selected from memory, but Geelong fans would know better. We both know rance...

Recommitted Ben King [re-signed until 2026]

Building a flag winning list isn't easy. It always takes risks and gambles. There is no simple way to do it.

Recommitted Ben King [re-signed until 2026]

Very possible. My hope is that by then we have shown ourselves to be on the rise and king (or someone) chooses us regardless of money (whilst still having a fairly competitive offer) like Cameron and Lynch did. I look at those two free agency trades as the model for us to follow.

Who is the best Key Defender of the 21st Century?

Being a loose defender actually often means ending up in a 1on1. You see an unmarked Stevie J in the pocket as Duncan is running up a wing with the ball. Rance slides across to contest and gets a 1on1. That is a point on the stats sheet, but not really what we are talking about. The fact that...

Recommitted Tim English [signs 5 year deal]

From a list management perspective I just can't justify the cap price of elite ruckmen. Get a cheap journeyman like the premiers have and just make do.

Who is the best Key Defender of the 21st Century?

I mostly agree but I don't think it is fair to say rance is the worst 1on1 defender of those available. He was elite at defending a particular sort of key forward (the highly mobile kind, exemplified by Buddy and Nick Reiwoldt). He would have done really well on Jack too but obviously never had...

Who is the best midfielder of the 21st century?

Sammy was a good but not great contested player in my opinion. He had a killer combination of both being great at getting clearances and being an elite user of the ball both by hand and foot. Few players combine both those skills (most extractors have poor delivery and vice versa, as seen by...

Who is the best Key Defender of the 21st Century?

What you are describing is a loose defender not a key defender. Rance was arguably the best loose defender considering how much he did it, but when McGovern played loose I think he was even better. The best loose defender in the game right now plays for my club I think. Key defenders are...

Those don't count as contested possessions though...

Who is the best midfielder of the 21st century?

Ablett was a huge contested player. Big clearance rates and did really well in 1on1 match ups either for loose balls or in marking contests. It is actually difficult to think of something gaj didn't do at an elite level (let others have the ball maybe?).

Who is the best Key Defender of the 21st Century?

Rance did not take the best key forward most weeks though. He is excluded from that conversation. Everyone else you named did indeed take the best most weeks. That Darcy Moore number is pretty darn solid. I wish we had data on guys like leppa and Scarlett.
