Footy commentary in the "heyday" versus present

To each their own. Never liked him. Far too syrupy, forced, and became more and more creepy and cringeworthy the longer he got. Haven't forgotten either him trying to introduce the horrific "bouncedown" into footy vernacular. "Check side" is bad enough (and inaccurate too).

News Scott Pendlebury to wear Gold #10 when he breaks the games record

Don't forget players spending tons more time on the interchange bench (in Bartlett and Tuck's time it was very little to zero), and now being actively managed - i.e. rested. They should be able to play a lot longer too.

    Reasons for disenchantment

Absolutely right, but in order to notice that, you have to actually think for yourself and not believe the propaganda that is relentlessly being forced on you. It seems fewer and fewer fans do this, or are even capable of it.

Max Gawn the greatest ever Demon

Not that crazy. Just depends what club you're at and how fortunate you are with timing. Bob Skilton also played 15 seasons and only played ONE final. Doesn't diminish how universally regarded he was though.

AFL commentary now at cringe levels

Yep. And not coincidentally, he was an excellent cricket commentator before he started doing footy.

Universal Love Tyson Stengle Possibly AWOL

Rioli was good - and very good for a while - but astonishingly overrated. He wasn't even the best small forward at his own club - Luke Bruest has him covered by miles. It's amazing, but not surprising, how endless fawning praise by one commentator made everyone else fall into line. Then it's...

His record stands up better than I remember to be honest. Was a good player though.

Bailey Smith's bitch was what immediately came to mind in light of last Saturday.

News Scott Pendlebury to wear Gold #10 when he breaks the games record

He's already done it. They tried the idiotic "white out" for his 350th last year against Brisbane. Having said that, he hasn't done anything as blatantly greedy as what Pendlebury is doing now either. Mind you, if you just happen to notice $2 million missing from an account (taken out over 10...

News Scott Pendlebury to wear Gold #10 when he breaks the games record

It is, or rather, is becoming more and more, was. The reason? Players are playing much longer. It's becoming a lot less rare. Players are actively managed throughout the season and throughout games. They even get games off. The maintenance is on a whole other level to what it was even 15 years...

News Scott Pendlebury to wear Gold #10 when he breaks the games record

I appreciated his achievements last week, when even the most neutral observer would have noticed the less-than-universally loved Bailey Smith (at times with good reason) rip St.Pendles to pieces. Somehow he still managed coaches votes. I'm guessing for keeping Smith to 40 possessions and not 50.

Review Cats bake Pies by 54 points

It's utterly ludicrous. Pendlebury's direct opponent was Bailey Smith - who tore him to pieces in the second half. De Goey I can live with getting votes. He was their best midfielder and worked hard all night. Pendlebury was unsighted after quarter time. I guess McCrae doesn't understand that...

    Voss Resigns

They absolutely are. It's amazing how many things in footy are still stuck in not just thinking of years ago, but many, many decades. Does anyone really think any new coach is going to magically turn Carlton around this year? They might progress slightly, but you'd think by now clubs would have...

    Carlton next coach

Not many in the recent era though. Malthouse would be the last to have won a flag previously (2010), and Matthews before that (2001-2003). They aren't quite outliers but it's not that common.
