It's textbook AFL. Someone bitches about a specific problem and they attack it with rule changes blindly, creating a raft of contradictory problems in its wake leading to further rule changes - repeat ad nauseum
Perhaps, but facts are he slid and we wouldn't have known that at the time we traded up for Smith, so again it's hindsight trading and offers nothing of value.
Could have had Chris Grant at 105, could have had James Hird at 79, could have had Matt Priddis in the rookie draft etc etc
From what I've read, its every club that slides:
Compensation Mechanism in the National Draft
From the 2026 National Draft, clubs whose first-round pick slides due to matched bids on concessional players will receive a second-round compensation pick.
This will only apply to clubs who meet all...
Whoosh. The compensation is to recognise bottom clubs losing access to the elite talent in the draft. Top order free agency compensation does exactly the same to those teams as a matched academy or FS bid. The impact is identical, regardless of the cause - so not clear why the rules would give...
Another thought which I don't think has been considered. Use last year as an example - West coast finish last, lose a free agent, and get compensation in the first round (pick 2) pushing back teams who finishes bottom 5 - are those clubs also eligible for an end of 1st round draft pick? Doesn't...

They're a year ahead of us in terms of flipping a coach they didnt like, and have committed to Carr.
They've beaten Richmond, Essendon and Geelong, whilst losing to Saints, West Coast, North, Hawks and Adelaide. Go have a read of their post mortem to the West Coast loss of you think all is rosy...
This is probably right, which is why if the AFL wanted to make wholesale changes, they should have to compel previous FS and academy players to go back into this year's draft with contracts the same as current - each team gets back the picks previously used, and must redraft under current rules...
This is where the compensation rules have messed with everything - ideally we would have organised a trade with WCE to shuffle ahead of the bid - but WCE aren't incentivised to trade the pick unless we offer more than the sliding compensation
I'm still optimistic that we've been competitive...
Doesn't work that way either. The pick is only granted after the end of the first round (i.e end of the night), so if we use the pick in the first five to match a bid, we don't get the compensation either.
It only works if we get to use our pick naturally in the top 5 of the draft, after a...
