Research Random Footy History article thread (Trove/Google etc)

I've found a bit more - not much, but the reason Farmer didn't play is that he declared himself unavailable for state footy that season. This article from 26 June says that "Farmer notified the selectors yesterday that he would not be available for the trip to Western Australia"...

Similar problem here - I get the result "403 Forbidden". It was a great site so I hope this is a temporary problem. For the moment it is somewhat possible to navigate the site via the Wayback Machine, but the pages for pre-1897 stats still aren't loading properly for me there either.

The way the byes are structured is absurd, but Round 7 is Port Melbourne's first bye, not counting the competition-wide bye for the SANFL v VFL game

In that case I don't know as my source is the VFL broadcast page here, so one or the other is wrong: https://www.afl.com.au/news/1479966/watch-your-team-smithys-vfl-broadcast-guide

This week the ABC is broadcasting Sandringham v Box Hill. Usually the ABC will cover a Saturday afternoon game, but this is the one exception for the first half of the season.

Hope so, that would be great and also rather a surprise

It does seem unlikely. Also seems unlikely the AFL would bother suggesting such a thing. Despite the implication of the article, it seems more likely they're introducing it for all clubs as a way of cutting down the number of standalones. Yeah, that's why it's concerning. Can't imagine the AFL...

Is it possible the licence fee would be a change that just applies to the AFL clubs? There was a report in the Herald Sun near the end of March that I am not currently finding with Google (what I saw at the time was a picture or scan taken from the print edition) that made it sound like it would...

    VFL 2026

The loss of an appreciation for the history of clubs is a real shame. And it doesn't help that the AFL has tried to erase the history of the VFA, to the point of suggesting, via their support of Colin Carter's book from a couple years ago, that it's the VFL/AFL, and not the VFA/VFL, that's a...

SANFL vs. VFL 2026 -- State Match Wrap-Up

Good write-up, nice look at the history of the match-up as well

That was a great game to watch, and it may well end up being the best game of Gather Round once again.

According to this article: https://www.afl.com.au/news/1493067/2026-sanfl-vs-vfl-state-games-match-day-guide, "The men's match will also be broadcast by the Seven Network via 7mate in South Australia and Victoria, and via 7plus nationally." So it looks like you should be able to get it through...

    VFL 2026

It's a real shame there's no television coverage; last year the SANFL-VFL game was genuinely the most exciting game of Gather Round. Not to mention that the AFL really missed a trick by not having it in Melbourne where it might at least have got more in-person viewers just by virtue of being...

    Delisted 8: Ben "Goblin" Hobbs - Delisted - 20/10

Hope it's all right to comment here - Hobbs didn't play because he's serving a two-match suspension. I didn't see the incident that led to it, but he was one of our best in round 1 and we definitely missed him this week. Hird's been a great pickup for us, consistently one of our best players and...

    VFL 2026

All good points. I am perhaps overly paranoid about what the AFL might do since, although the administration is (presumably) composed of humans who respond to incentives rather than cartoon villains, they do not always even respond to incentives in ways that are reasonable or genuinely in their...
