Research Random Footy History article thread (Trove/Google etc)

August 1977, South Melbourne dud the children of Altona. Looks like Gregg was still being confused for the cricketer after moving to Queensland in the 80s.

Mega Thread General MFC Discussion IV

That article is a sad attempt to pretend we're not minnows. It's like Equatorial Guinea putting out a press release about how good their Olympic uniforms are.

    Player Watch #36: Kozzy Pickett – 2025 All-Australian

I was ready to take poison after reading the headline. Then it's a club-endorsed absence and he's been training on his own to make up for missed sessions.

Resource List thread - Inaccuracy in official records

For what it's worth, my list of non-senior players is far from definitive but I've got nothing about Bob playing practice matches for Melbourne except the article listed above so I'm 99.99% sure this was the wrong name. Makes sense for Barrie to be in the secondary team given he'd only played...

Opinion Round 1 banner ideas v. St Kilda

For the love of all that is holy, please no references to Nasiah missing out on the three votes given that it was only scandalous because we'd just incinerated a 46 point lead. In honour of our reboot let's go with: CTRL ALT DELETE

Signing up for a construction project in Victoria involving a tunnel that's meant to cost $10 million. What could possibly go wrong?

Thank you, I'll take that as the final piece in the puzzle. I was there but put it out of my mind due to being thrashed.

Resource List thread - Inaccuracy in official records

AFL Tables, Football Record and Sydney Morning Herald 27/07/1998 show the crowd for Melbourne vs North Melbourne in Round 17, 1998 as 36,042 but The Age on 26/07/98 and 27/07/98 show 26,042. 36k seems too high for a late season game between these sides (and is only narrowly short of the...

    Favourite Melbourne Games

Round 2, 1998 vs North Melbourne. We opened a big first half lead, nearly lost, then steadied to win. That was the day I really got back into footy after a couple of years out of the loop due to teenage misery.

Resource List thread - Inaccuracy in official records

Fitzroy's half time score in Round 10, 1937 is shown on AFL Tables, Australian Football and probably other places as 1.5. Per the Sporting Globe match report, their score was 6.5, and The Age says scores were level at half time. I've sent this to AFL Tables, but cc Oliver G and anyone else...

Disputed one for first kick/first goal thanks to whoever uploaded a bunch of Melbourne 1986 games to YouTube. Round 8, 1986 - If you count Jeremy Nichols' (#39) swipe at the ball on the ground at the first bounce as a kick then it's a no. Otherwise, I don't see him get another before kicking...

Autopsy Off season crap thread: three things you got right at some point to do with the Demons (or footy more broadly)

    1) I was right into Gawn in the early days when he was in and out of the side BUT also sooked up when we traded the Stefan Martin Experience so maybe they cancel each other out. 2) Also connected to the SME via somebody who once belted him. I wanted to get Steven May out of Gold Coast for a few...

Opinion Where do Gawn, Petracca, and Oliver rank in our all-time greats?

Gawn - right near the top Petracca - high but short of the greatest of all time conversation Oliver - a clear third, and despite the 4x B&F and iconic Grand Final goal I don't think his reputation will have anywhere near the same staying power
