Are people still banging on about this, thirty years later?
To the merger cheerleaders: forget it. Ross Oakley is retired, Graeme Samuel went to the ACCC and made similarly idiotic decisions there. Without its constituent clubs, the AFL is nothing.
While I do agree with you, Price (and no, I don't know his real name) essentially squealed on gangland figures to police in exchange for an even lighter sentence. So the fear is retribution against his family members for that reason. I think it's an idiotic reason, but that's the reason.
Edit...
I feel like it's the only name that's had staying power - Etihad and Marvel Stadium names felt like they were there for 5 minutes, and the "Etihad Stadium" name is definitely more associated with the Emptyhad in Manchester.
I remember asking Dad as a kid, when Colonial changed its name, "why is it Telstra Dome, not Telstra Stadium?"
Of course, the fact that Sydney already had a Telstra Stadium was lost on me.
So who was it that was banging on about this game meaning nothing and Freo at Optarse was the real test? Did you see how well they played against Carltank? Can't wait.
Yup bang on - and to beat that midfield by eight goals? So we didn't deliver a perfect ballet performance? It's not like we're playing witches hats here!
