COUNTRY footy fans are set to score a $50 million goal, with the State Government believed to have secretly committed to a new AFL-standard stadium in the goldfields city of Ballarat.

Premier John Brumby this week confirmed long-term plans to upgrade Eureka Stadium.

The suburban football ground would be transformed into a big multi-purpose venue in one of regional Victoria's fastest-growing areas, in the belief it can potentially host a handful of AFL games each season.

I once played in a GF on that ground, and the wind was so strong I saw our FB kick out from a point and it went over his head for a point, and he would normally roost it 55m. It's in a terrible location.

What happened to Hobart? Are they playing games in Ballarat AND Hobart now? Getting a bit confusing, especially for a club that committed to being a 'Melbourne' club?

The ground is located in the coldest, windiest part of a town which is the coldest, windiest town in Victoria.

They should leave it the way it is so you can watch an AFL game from the comfort of your own car.

Very true. An appropriate name would be "The Icefield"

:D Or maybe they can build a stadium like in the movie "Cars".

FTR - Its about the worst possible spot in Ballarat for a decent stadium - and thus a terrible idea. A redevelopment of either the City Oval or Eastern Oval would be far better if any stadium was really thought necessary
