As a follower of one of the clubs with the heaviest travel burden, I've long believed the playing life of a WA based player suffers from the travel, particularly players with soft tissue injuries. No facts, just a view albeit self interested.

Now the AFLPA are taking up the issue:
Players have also complained about the difficulties of rehabilitating with ice in cramped economy seats when returning from interstate games, telling of sometimes stripping down to their underwear in front of fellow economy class travellers for post-game treatment or to place ice packs.

It was even suggested AFL careers could be cut short by a failure to receive proper treatment during the critical hours spent travelling in cramped confines.

The AFL Players' Association will seek a meeting with the league next week to raise concerns about the switch and a perceived lack of concern about player welfare on interstate flights.
Stars from several clubs raised misgivings about economy class travel to and from interstate games at an AFLPA delegates' conference in Torquay this week.

I for one trust WA clubs get a more equitable deal.
With no WA representation on the AFL Commission to champion the cause, more power the AFLPA !!!!

Or clubs could wait until the next day to travel back after interstate games... That would alleviate all of the concerns in the article, no?

Despite the supposed mirth following on from the OP the concern is justified. The players are the ones who provide the performance and the concerns about being unable to treat injuries or in fact worsening them on flights is justified.

It's disappointing the AFL didn't discuss flight arrangements for 2011, arranging an area on flights for the players to have a little extra room to ice up and lay their legs, particularly on Brisbane or Perth flights is not unjustifed concern.

There may be a need for the travel burden to more evenly shared across the playing group
OR
additional payment outside the general salary cap ....

With the politicians making the call on fixturing, why shouldnt the AFLPA put conditions on to protect travelling players.

Clubs want to get their players back to the familiarity and comforts of home as quickly as they can. They can sleep in their own beds and have access to the proper medical treatment etc which they can't get when they travel.

Fremantle and West Coast need to put their heads together and finally fork out for a charter plane.

Spot on. With a charter plane they could get rub downs, fly at a lower altitude, have more leg room, better scheduling and even make some $$ back selling some seats to fans down the back.

Its either
Corruption
Collusion
or
just a good business decision re VB and the AFL
given that an AFL commissioner Sam Mostyn is also a director of Virgin Blue.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

The decision is not good for the players.

I started a thread about the VB / AFL deal a few days ago.

no , as you lose an extra days training , recovery etc .
Collingwood , Esssendon and Melb rarely travel so its not going to worry them.
Other clubs especially the interstate clubs players will suffer immensley.
The AFL must overturn the VB decision due to the players safety and welfare .

Are you are shareholder in Qantas and losing money because of this or something?

All you have done is bag Virgin even though there have been facts brought to your attention in the other thread that states that Qantas and Virgin are basically the same in seat dimensions and also that Virgin is introducing Business class.

AFL has banned both teams from using charter planes. But allowed Geelong and some other Victorian team to use charter travelling to Perth.

Combined West Coast and Fremantle has $24m in the bank. Dare say that West Coast has $20m and Freo $4m. West Coast could buy a plane but the A(V)FL would not let them.

How can they ban them? What are they going to do if they turn up in a charter plane? If the AFL are standing in their way then it's time they pushed them aside. They are two of the very few financially independent clubs in the competition. If their CEO's aren't up to the job of getting the best for their club then it's time they stepped aside.

All AFL must use the official carrier, except Victoria teams travelling to Perth. They can use charter planes.
