Harris Andrews named in 22Under22 squad

Brisbane Lions defender Harris Andrews has been named in the AFL's initial squad for the 2016 22Under22 team, which recognises the next generation of AFL stars.

The 50-man squad was ratified by the AFL Players’ Board and acknowledges the best young players who have achieved consistency across the 2016 home and away season.

To be eligible, players must be aged 22 years and under for the entirety of the 2016 season, including the finals series.

Now in its fourth year, 22Under22 is the industry’s only recognised fan-voted award and provides the footy public with the authority to select the final team.

A Queenslander, Andrews made his pathway to AFL through the Club's Hyundai Help for Kids Lions Academy.

In just his second season the 19-year-old has often taken responsibility as a general in the Lions' backline, directing the Club's young defenders.

He was nominated for The AFL's Rising Star in Round 18 last season.

I wouldn't ever bank on many Lions players making the 22under22 team given selection is completely fan based. Therefore the side lacks credibility given it will be nothing more than a popularity contest.

Gee this kid is something special in the making...a 19 year old who plays like Harry Taylor. A few more kg's on that frame and he'll be one of the best defenders in the game by the time he's 23 :handok:

Not bad for pick #61 :)

Really happy that Merrett is staying on in a defensive teaching capacity. Think people forget how good he was a few years back prior to ripping his hamstring and losing that closing speed (and confidence).

Player Reviews: No. 31 - 35

In 2016 Harris Andrews continued his climb up the ranks as a future star in the Brisbane Lions’ defence. In just his second year, the 19-year-old was often required to take on the top forwards in the competition. The big man averaged 10.3 disposals, 5.8 kicks and 4.5 handballs a game, he was also named in the 22Under22 squad of 2016.

Coach’s notes:

In just his second year of AFL Footy, he basically had to change his role up from what he did last year due to Clarkey (Justin Clarke) going down with injury. He took the best or second best forward each week. Statistically he had the same impact as 2015. Hopefully we can bring in some new players around him next year, which will enable him to go back to playing the third tall, and allow him to be more of an intercept player for us. His leadership obviously went to another level this year and hopefully he can make a step forward in that area again in 2017.

I was listening to SEN the other day and Danny Frawley did a bit of a 'defenders around the league' current status and he had Matt Scarlett as the past pinnacle, Alex Rance as the current king and Harris Andrews and Aliir Aliir as the heirs apparent. Nice to see Harris getting some outside recognition at a relatively young age, seems like such a good egg too.

THE NEXT BIG THING

VERY quietly, Harris Andrews continues to develop into an extremely promising key defender.

The 20-year-old is rated as the fourth-best player on the Lions’ list, according to Champion Data. While he only grades out as average, the numbers say he is 50 per cent better than the average 20-year-old key defender.

He’s a tremendous spoiler and is growing into an elite interceptor as well. Although in his third season, the Lions will be hoping he can also improve on his ability to win his own ball.

Seeing him take that pack mark and kick the goal made me wonder what he'd be like as a permanent forward/second ruck......

Beauty is he can be anything. One game last year leppa swung him forward in the 3rd and he took like 2-3 grabs in 5 mins and kicked 2. Almost turning enough momentum our way. Destined for greatness wherever he plays.

Early on I thought he'd end up a ruckman. Didn't think he'd have the speed and agility to play KPP once he bulked up. Seems to be doing pretty well so far though.

The Brisbane Lions have locked in three key players, with Harris Andrews, Ben Keays and Sam Skinner signing contract extensions.

Andrews, who was already contracted until the end of 2018, has put pen to paper and will remain at the Lions until at least 2021.

Andrews is now the Brisbane Lions player with the equal furthermost contract expiry (with Daniel Rich).

He is the best spoken Lions player in the squad IMO. Worthy captain right now if Beams and Rocky were out of the team.

It's an awesome feeling as a supporter to have one of your young stars sign on more than a year away from their original contract ending. While I am sure he will be getting well paid over the next 4 years, he is worth it. Also probably has to do with the fact he is in his home state.

Considering the southern states have really started noticing how good he is/could be, it was probably a smart move to offer a healthy long term contract to lock him in even though he is only 20 years old.
