Fitzroy-ACU Womens teams will join the VAFA

Crunching details from the Roys newsletter :

The latest info coming through re the VAFA womens comp is that there are 40 teams.
This is my take on what I caught from my local club's newsletter:

The season will be separated into a kind of seeding segment (3 rounds) and then the remainder of the season.
Teams which existed last year (in the VWFL) will form a four-team premiers grade:
- AJAX, Brunswick Renegades, Fitzroy-ACU, SKOBs.
- The remainder (36 teams will form 6 "seeding" (my term) divisions until the end of Round 3.

At that point the top 4 teams from the seeding divs will be promoted to the Premier grade.
This will create a 5 division system of
- Premiers (8 teams)
- 4 regionally based divisions (probably 8 teams each)

This counts up to 40 teams, which is 8 or 10 more than I'd identified earlier. Some clubs might have multiple teams (eg Fitzroy will have a 2nds team in one of the regional grades).

Considering the VAFA has 7 grades, starting a womens comp with 5 grades is an impressive jolt to the participation demographic. (of course the mens also have reserves, 3rds in 3 grades, multiple U19s divisions, and I think still a Club XVIII - essentially social level - competition, with between 8 and 10 teams in each).

I've also just learnt that the VAFA will follow the VWFL match setup (20 minute quarters, no time-on, etc)

Thanks to the Roys admin for the info!

Was lucky enough to catch the Ladies play their finals last season under an AFL thingy.
Anyway they played their guts out and did the (Fitzroy) ACU jumper proud. There was a lass Named Elizabeth that threaded a few sausage roll's through. So really hope she makes an appearance somewhere.
Going to have to catch a few games. Maybe with a Tram Conductor or two.;)

So the Roys-ACU teams have had to shut the gate as they are overflowing with numbers now.

Let's hope the potential players that missed out can find a spot at other clubs, rivals within the VAFA or out at South-East & Yarra (or maybe Northern FL). The importance of nurturing the growth of womens footy is bigger than even our glorious Roys!

As both intimated, nobody knows who's gonna be strong this year? 90% (my figure) of all the female players around the game in 2017 are close on first-season players. Great to see a couple of the girls having a chat with the VAFA though. Gonna be a fun ride following their progress!

Think Ajax will be the other one to watch, But hey as you say it will probably a pretty level paying field for this year.
Anyway go Roy's-ACU :)
