Some bumper crowds turned out for the five matches of offer this past weekend, the Easter holidays bringing in a figure just short of 18000 over the five day period. From the Thursday night through to Easter Monday, SANFL football was a winner with the locals, the aggregate attendance just over 4000 more than the opening round of the season. Now its a matter of whether or not SA footy-heads can maintain the rage, seeing as the weather has been very kind thus far and we all know the clouds are coming. There were a couple of close games, hopefully that excitement can bring in more regardless of the conditions that await.
Welcome to the Round 2 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.
Thursday night football began the Easter long weekend, the first game for the round takes us to the Coopers Stadium in Norwood where the Redlegs hosted their bitter rivals in the Magpies. Their last encounter was at Alberton in Round 21 last season, the Magpies posting a 25-point victory. But as for their last match at The Parade, the result was exactly the same but in favour of the Redlegs in the 2016 season opener. Norwood began this year with a win at home while the Magpies were given a shock by the Tigers last Friday. Over 6000 fronted up for this clash of the traditional SA rivals and were about to be treated to a match that could only come from this setting. The Redlegs had the better start, scoring 5.4 to 3.2 to go into the first change with a 14-point lead. The Magpies could have been taken more than just a two-point lead into the change rooms at the half-time break, but inaccuracy saw them kick 4.4 to the Redlegs' two goals in the second term. There was more sprayed shots on goals by Port when play resumed and the 'Legs re-took the lead by three quarter-time, the home side scoring 3.3 to 1.7. At the final change, Norwood were a goal ahead. The final term was an all-out arm-wrestle and it all came down to the final minutes as Port nicked the win by three points, one last shot on goal by the 'Pies among their 4.4 to Norwood's 3.1 breaking the hearts of the Redleg faithful. Jake Neade was named best for the visitors, while the Redlegs named Callum Bartlett as their best afield.
The action continued on the Friday afternoon with the Northern Derby between the Roosters and the Bulldogs at Prospect Oval. The Bulldogs had it all over the Roosters last year, starting with a Round 1 107-point drubbing at the Ponderosa, then a 15-point win at Prospect in Round 18. Both sides were first round losers, the Dogs dropping their bundle at home to the Eagles, while the Roosters lost the neighbours battle to Norwood. Centrals started off rather confidently to begin with, scoring 4.2 to North's 1.1 to take a 19-point lead at quarter-time. But the Roosters got going in the second term, restricting the Bulldogs to 1.1 and kicked 5.3 to lead by seven points at the long break. The Dogs goal-kicking woes from last weekend would return to haunt them again this week upon resumption of play, they peppered their goals for a return of 4.5 to North's 6.1 in the third quarter to find themselves down by 15 points at three quarter-time. The Bulldogs got the first couple of goals to start the final term, but the Roosters had all the answers despite a little inaccuracy of their own. North would go on to record a 23-point victory, finishing with a 5.4 to 4.2 last quarter. Max Thring was North's best on ground, the Dogs named Nick Holman as their best.
The other Friday afternoon match was set for a twilight start, the Tigers facing the Double Blues at Gliderol Stadium at Glenelg. It wasn't until mid-season that these two squared off last year, the Blues taking a 27-point win against a heavily-inaccurate Tigers outfit at this very ground. Then came the final round game at Unley, where a last quarter rally by the Tigers saw the match end in a stalemate, 86 points each. The Tigers began the season with a surprise win against Port, while the reigning premiers were edged out by Adelaide. The 4800 people that turned out witnessed a shootout first term with both sides scoring 4.1 each, Glenelg getting a last minute goal to level the scores. The Tigers suffered a bit of a wobble in the second term, the Blues taking advantage of their foes' horrid goal-kicking to score four goals without a miss as compared to the Tigers' 1.8. At the half-time break, Sturt led by 10 points. Soon enough however, the form that saw them humble the Magpies was back for all to see, they rammed home 8.1 to Sturt's comparably paltry 1.2 as they re-established control of the game. At three quarter-time the Tigers were up by 25 points. They kept up the tempo in the final stanza, running off to a 61-point victory on the back of a 7.1 to 2.1 last quarter scoreline. Josh Scott scored three goals and took best on ground honours for Glenelg, Kory Beard was named Sturt's best.
There was just one game on for the normal Saturday afternoon time slot, the SANFL's own West Side Story
saw the Eagles and the Bloods clash at the Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval at Woodville. There was definitely no joy in store for the Bloods in the two games against the Eagles last season, both ending in forgettable hammerings of 73 points in Round 5 and 76 points in Round 14, a terrible vengeance exacted for their 2015 premiership decider defeat. The Eagles were hot against the Bulldogs, while the Bloods were pipped at the post on their home deck by South. The game was even to begin with, only a point separating the two sides with Westies leading after kicking 3.3 to the Eagles' 3.2. But after that it was all Eagles, their second quarter was pretty much the game-breaker as they bagged 8.2 to the Bloods' solitary behind to lead by eight goals at the long break. The Eagles wouldn't go own to set any significant records, but they wouldn't need to do much from here to guarantee a victory. One thing the rest of the competition should know however is that despite losing a raft of personnel, their talent pool is deep. The Eagles would extend their lead to 59 points ahead of the final change, kicking 4.3 to the Bloods' 2.4 in the third term, before the two sides going almost score for score in the last quarter, the home side winning by 10 goals after scoring 4.2 to 4.1. Jack Hayes took out best afield honours in his second outing in the Eagles seniors, while Westies named debutant Jake Wilson as their standout.
In the final game of the weekend's action, we head down to the beachside town of Victor Harbor, in its western side we find the Encounter Bay Oval where the Panthers hosted the Crows. The Panthers held its own in the regular season against the Crows, with a one-point win in Round 6 followed by a 38-point victory in the final round. But much to the anger of the Panthers faithful as well as the traditional league fans, an AFL-stacked outfit cast aside South in the 1st Semi-Final by nine goals. Both clubs edged out their foes in the opening round by less than a kick each, no doubt a drawcard for the near 2400 that filed into the ground hoping to see some good football. They weren't to be disappointed, the Crows were inaccurate early but would still hold a nine-point lead at quarter-time after kicking 4.5 to the Panthers' 3.2. That gap stretched to 11 points by half-time as Adelaide managed a further 3.3 to South's 3.1 in the second term. The Crows would continue to build a deficit when play resumed, but the Panthers wouldn't let them make overly significant strides as the gap crept out to 13 points by three quarter-time in a repeat of the second quarter scores. But despite a final term fightback by the Panthers, the Crows kept them at bay long enough to take a one-goal win after a 4.2 to 3.1 last quarter. Harrison Dear was named Adelaide's best, the Panthers named Sam Overall as their best afield.
