North Melbourne Football Club have announced a separation from Werribee from 2018, leaving Werribee as a stand-alone along with Port Melbourne and perhaps filling a void to potentially be left by North Ballarat if they cannot turn things around in 2017. Time will tell.

GLENORCHY premiership coach Aaron Cornelius is not convinced by AFL Tasmania’s proposal to send state league players over to play for North Melbourne’s VFL side.

AFL Tasmania has held discussions with North Melbourne about the possibility of TSL players temporarily playing for the Kangaroos’ stand-alone VFL side in the future.

North Melbourne will end its relationship with VFL side Werribee next year and enter a stand-alone side in the competition.

AFL Tasmania chief executive Rob Auld said he had discussed with the Kangaroos the chance of TSL players playing for their reserves side.

He said they would play games temporarily to boost exposure without actually leaving their TSL clubs.

Auld said the plan would be subject to clearances, logistics and TSL clubs’ approval. But Glenorchy coach Aaron Cornelius said the idea would cost him key players and he suggested a better alternative would be a return of the Tasmanian Devils to the VFL.

“It’d be great exposure for our TSL players,” Cornelius said. “But how is it picked, how often do they play, what teams are they coming from and what does that mean for TSL teams having your under-18s [Mariners] go and your top-echelon players.

“It means that if Glenorchy are going well, Jaye Bowden goes and our Mariners — so how does that leave us?

“There would be a lot of work as far as logistics would go but if that’s the case then why don’t we push for a VFL side?”

Lauderdale coach Darren Winter agreed and said having key players missing could drain his side.

“I don’t know how it’s going to go,” Winter said. “My only concern would be how many players are going to be playing in it [the VFL].”

But Clarence coach Jeromey Webberley said he would be open to his younger players travelling for better exposure during his club’s byes.

“You’d want them to be draftable or players that need exposure at the [VFL] level,” Webberley said. “We don’t want any top-end talent that are experienced going over as that would be detrimental to the team.”

Meanwhile, ahead of this weekend Cornelius will welcome back Tassie Mariners Harrison Pearce and Harrison Gunther as well as Mitch Hills for the Pies’ clash with Launceston at Windsor Park.

The Magpies were missing nine players in last weekend’s loss to Lauderdale and Cornelius said they would miss 11 state team players from training this week as they head to Launceston for a session.

Lauderdale’s Alex Hevey is a chance to return from an ankle injury this week, but Winter said he may still be rested.

Having players FIFO for a couple of cameo games will do nothing to help North ressies game style, continuity or success. Bad idea all round.
