I like that he can still continue the traditions of "bloke with average looking body can still play AFL". Just gotta have the skills.

Eagles defender.Peter Matera says hi!
Eagles defender.
I don't think anyone will pass Matera for best finals performance though, for the Eagles.
Except way betterMcGovern is like the younger version of Brian Lake.
Except way better
IIRC he was too overweight in his first few years which is why he never got a game lolI find his backstory fascinating. A late rookie pick who spent THREE FULL SEASONS on the rookie list without a game, got a 4th year, which is pretty much unprecedented then just randomly bobbed up one year as a marking machine.
They did well to keep the faith. But I can't think of any other instance where a rookie has been retained for a 4th year.IIRC he was too overweight in his first few years which is why he never got a game lol

Andrew McGovern was on a VHS I had as a kid from Fremantle's inaugural season. Melbourne won the game, but Chris Groom was giving us headaches early on.Clancee Pearce.
But anyway, the real hero here is Andrew McGovern, inaugural Docker and deadset legend of the game.
It's rare, we were very close to getting rid of him apparently. They did well to keep the faith. But I can't think of any other instance where a rookie has been retained for a 4th year.

Glass on Barry Hall in the 06 grand final?
Clay smith 2016 prelim
Fails the test of being both an Eagles player and a Defender but yeah sure you were close
McGovern probably more consistent and less prone to brain-fades, but Lake was just brilliant at his best and regularly stood up in big games.
McGovern was amazing tonight though.
