Adelaide paying a relatively token sum to join the league had little to do with anything. It was just a case of the previous teams had to, so they made you do it too (that and buying your share of the VFLs assets).
Just remember Adelaide (amongst others) are one of the financially healthly clubs who prop up the loss making Victorian ones, but the reality is even if the Swampies were admitted in 1990, they wouldn't have been able to do so as the "Magpies"

The $800,000 from West Coast & Brisbane's entry would have helped

I'm sure it would have (it would have been less, but anyway), but the person I was replying to was talking about survival, and clearly Richmond fans were capable of ensuring that.

No, they really don't.

How do Adelaide contribute from their profits to the Vic clubs? Do you hand over some of your profits to them? Do you put money into the league?

Vic clubs actually pay for the league...AFL members, buying Docklands....It's why they make a 'loss', and Adelaide does very little in that regard.

And how much do those clubs put into the league?

Payments include lots of things....e.g. AFL members with club support packages...the part that the AFL hands over the the clubs counts here....as does the signage and pourage payment from docklands (after the AFL takes a cut of course).

Then of course there are the stadium deals at docklands and MCG, both of which put a lot of money into the AFLs pockets.

In short, the extra money Vic clubs get is far less than Vic clubs give to the AFL.

Gil seemed to imply a coin toss would decide the 'home team'
I bet if Richmond wins the toss they will make the Crows wear the white rubbish but if the Crows win the toss it will just be the Tiges in white shorts.

Just don't get why it's not highest ranking team. I get that it fits The narrative of the club I support this year but it's too late anyway but I would be happy for this to be the rule from next year onwards. Highest team should always be rewarded
Simple because the so called home team privileges finishes at the prelim final.

But if you need a way to decide it's surely the most logical, fair and transparent solution.

The cynic in me thinks this mysterious 'coin toss' is just a way for the AFL to manipulate the result they want. Does anyone actually believe Adelaide has a chance of winning the 'toss' if it meant Richmond would have to wear their clash strip?

How can it be mysterious when it involves officials from both clubs? Do you think the Crows or Tiges would allow it any other way

Gil was on 360 tonight and he wants a coin toss, he stated that Richmond and Adelaide are the worst clash strips in the competition. Gil is wrong of course, i think he might be quite mad? He also states, it's no one's home game, i don't think this bloke understands what qualifying higher after 22 rounds actually means? Luckily he won't have to toss a coin as Geelong do not clash with the Tigers strip. Gil doesn't fool anybody, we have become accustomed to corporate knobends reinforcing this obsession with image in place of reality. We all know what they're doing and they know that we know. I'm not buying any of it ...going forward! He's a killer at corporate "speak", never trust anybody who uses the word paradigm more than twice ...
