In the under 10's when I first started playing cricket they were mainly one day games and you had to retire at 30. Anyway there was one 2 day game each season and in that game you had to retire at 50 but could go back in after the second last batsmen went out. Anyway I had a rivalry with one of my team mates for who was the best batsman. He came in at 3 and me at 4. He made fifty as did I. He then went back in at the end and raced to 99 off the 3rd last ball of the day. The last batsman just had to nudge a single to give him the strike with one ball to go. He guided one down to fine leg for one only to watch the kid misfield and it went through for 4....poor old Kempy was left stranded on 99!
I remember my 2nd or 3rd game in our 1st XI
and we were chasing 180 odd and were cruising at 4 for 170 odd. Me being 17 and the newbie, I was batting 10. Anyway, I was taking my post tea break dump and the skipper runs in screaming "KohPhi, where the * are you, we have lost 4 for 3".
So I quickly get off the crapper, put my pads on and hear another wicket has fallen. I grab my bat, walk out to the wicket needing 4 runs to win. Anyway, the opposition bowler was ex Essendon player Mark Harvey who was a fricken nutcase and very sharp, he has just ripped through our middle order and had a head full of steam.
Then I start hearing cackles of laughter from the opposition and our blokes and I realised I've gone out to bat with my moccasins on.
The umpire told me to face up and ended up hitting the winning runs in my moccos.
