Handy Facts

- Reilly made his debut against StKilda in Rd 15 of 2002, although his performance was one he would rather forget - notching up just one effective contested handball and one tackle for the match.

- He played a further 6 games in 2003 notching up 46 disposals,- 30 kicks, 16 handballs, 19 marks, 4 goals 6 behinds and 2 tackles. His greatest and most memorable moment of 2003 coming against Collingwood in the Pre-Season premiership where he put his body on the line to run backwards and leap infront of a rampaging Anthony Rocca whio was on a hard, fast lead.. Reilly came down with the ball in his hands and slight concussion for his troubles but it was at that very moment that we all knew he was going to be a very special player for the Adelaide Football Club.

- It wasn't until 2004 that Reilly blossomed as a senior player, playing 14 games for Adelaide and accruing 187 disposals - 130 kicks, 57 handballs, 58 marks and 25 tackles. He was rewarded with a nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award for his efforts against Melbourne in Rd 14, amassing 30 disposals - 25 kicks 5 handballs, 9 marks, 1 tackle and 1 behind.

- His good form continued into 2005 as a winger/running defender, also being rotated in Adelaide's midfield off the bench. Reilly averaged 75 minutes game-time in 05 and was benched 83 times - equal 4th most in the competition. Despite his limited game-time, however, Reilly averaged 15 disposals, 2 tackles, 1.6 clearances and 3 inside 50s per game.He also ranked 5th in Adelaide's Score Assists (with 23 score assists and 12 goal assists for the year), whilst kicking 11 goals himself.

- He earned himself his first Brownlow Vote for his efforts against Port in Round 3, 2005 where he had 22 disposals - 17 kicks 5 handballs, 9 marks, 2 goals 1 behind, 4 tackles and 1 free for.

- Reilly improved his numbers considerably in 2006, playing every game and increasing his disposal average by 32% from the previous season (12.9 to 17.0 disposals per game). He also increased his inside 50s to average almost 4 per game (ranking 2nd at Adelaide in 2006).

- Despite developing his game considerably in 2006, he was still Adelaide's most benched player (99 times) and spent an average of 71% of game-time on the ground.

- Reilly spent much time focusing on his work off the ball - and it showed - he averaged a career-high 4 tackles per game and was better at the stoppages where he won a career-high 61 clearances - proving he had made the transition from a purely outside player to a valuable inside-option at the stoppages, he was now a highly versatile midfield player.

- Reilly was again a danger pushing forward in 06 - not only kicking 14 goals but also had 26 Score Assists which ranked 3rd at Adelaide.

- In 2007, Reilly had an injury-interrupted season, he was hampered by persistent ankle injuries which restricted him to his lowest games tally in a season since 2004, playing in 17 of Adelaide's 23 games this year. Despite this, Reilly still managed to increase his disposals average to 19 per game, yet his tackles average halved as did his impact on the scoreboard.

Summary

Reilly has been touted as a future leader at the AFC, and is recognised as being the cleanest disposer of the football at the club whilst always having exceptional awareness of where his teammates are. This in-part played a role in securing him the nickname "Radar" by his teammates - not only a delightful anecdote relating to his look-alike and namesake Radar Reilly from the once-popular Television series M.A.S.H.

Reilly will be looking to cement a more permanent role in Adelaide's midfield as Edwards' and Goodwin's careers come to an end. In his 85 games to date, Radar has been given limited time on ground and will be desperate to spend as much time as possible out on the field, and in the process we may finally see the best of the outstanding qualities he possesses an a top-flight footballer.

I believe within the next 2 years, Reilly will have established himself as one of the competition's elite midfielders and will have been rewarded as such with a leadership role at the AFC.

Reilly is an absolute pleasure to watch on the football field. At stoppages he frequently puts his body on the line to win clearances and works just as hard off the ball to give his team an advantage in the middle. He always seems to have so much more time and space than your average footballer, and delivers to his teammates which such deadly precision and remarkable accuracy.

He is the type of footballer every young midfielder growing up can learn from and perhaps aspire to be; Courageous, always aware, a true leader, highly skilled on both sides of his body with both hand and foot and an all-round fine young gentleman. :thumbsu:

Re: #33 - Brent Reilly

I feel Reilly is often the forgotten CROW, people talk about our guns (macca, tys, goody), our future leaders (thompson, rutten) and our young guns (knights, VB, douglas), Reilly is often not mentioned....however next year i believe he will have a big a year as any...

towards the end of last year, once he put his constant, niggl and match fit he put together some massive games....if he can stay fit a 'Yellow Jacket' is not out of reach....

Re: #33 - Brent Reilly

That goal he kicked in round 22 against the Pies was SPECIAL.

He received from Knights who wasn't confident to do it himself. Reilly took responsibility and delivered. That's class and leadership right there, but one must also hope Knights takes that next step, and next time, feels confident to make his own play.

Enthusiasm at all-time high: Reilly

ENTHUSIASM at West Lakes is at an all-time high, according to Crows midfielder Brent Reilly.
Adelaide added 10 new faces to its senior list during the off-season and it appears the group is already having a positive impact.
The recruits, who are all aged between 17 and 23, have helped create the air of excitement currently emanating from West Lakes.
Reilly said the combination of youth and reduced expectations from outside the club had generated a different feel among the playing group heading into round one.
“The beauty of this year is that we’ve got no pressure [from outside] on us,” Reilly said.
“We’ve got some young players and no one will think we’ll make the finals, but I’m sure we will.
“The amount of enthusiasm we’ve got at the club at the moment is fantastic. If we can go out there and win the NAB Cup grand final on Saturday night it will be a great boost for our players.”
Last year, on the back of a tough season, the Crows were forced to endure criticism that the fun had been taken out of the game under the current coaching panel.
Reilly said the allegations had no basis, but agreed that the injection of young players had made West Lakes a ‘bubblier’ environment.
“I don’t know about the fun thing from last year,” he said. “We always have fun at our footy club and it hasn’t been an issue for us.
“We have fun in the changerooms and when we’re training. We can joke around a little bit as long as, when the time is right, we can go out and perform when it has to be done.”
“The young fellas coming through are from under-18s and they have brought different ideas with them. They’re all very bubbly around the place and it’s a bit weird having so many young blokes around to have a little bit of a chat with.
“It's great to have them here because it lifts our training up and the enthusiasm is fantastic at the moment. Their enthusiasm rubs off on everyone - they want to get better and that drives you along, too, and makes you want to help them get better.
“The way they train and get around the footy club - you get that immaturity coming out. It makes it a little bit fun with the jokes going around, like someone might throw a bit of ice or something silly like that. It just mixes it up a little bit and is a bit of fun.”
Adelaide, in addition to rejuvenating 25 per cent of its playing list, also added new faces Ben Hart and Matthew Clarke to the coaching staff.
Senior coach Neil Craig has also cast some players in different roles this season.
Reilly, 24, is one player who has been given more responsibility in the Crows’ new-look midfield.
The raking left-footer said a change in on-field roles had helped fuel his excitement for the upcoming season.
“On a personal note, now I know I can play in the midfield and I feel like I have to perform well and be a leader in there,” Reilly said.
“There are a few blokes in the same mould, like Simon Goodwin and Tyson Edwards playing up forward, and we’re really looking forward to the season coming up.”
Reilly and company last week overcame the challenge of Hawthorn’s midfielders and will be pitted with another tough task against St Kilda in Saturday night’s NAB Cup grand final at AAMI Stadium.
“Hawthorn has a very good midfield and even though Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge got a bit of the ball our weight of numbers through the midfield was fantastic, and if we can do that again this week it will go a long way towards winning the game,” Reilly said.
“We’ve got a young list, so it’s going to be a great experience for them to play in a grand final. The intensity will probably be like a normal round game and we’ll go out there and try to win.”

Whilst he may be a 'raking left footer', I'd still say she probably wishes she wrote raking right footer. :)

Oh, and just stumbled across this.

I'd say Knighta's super goal when he could of passed off to Goodwin on the weekend is a good indication.

Thanks for posting that article PPS :thumbsu:

He had some great things to say about the feeling around the club and the boost in morale with the injection of youth on such a large scale. I think there is alot to look forward to from our younger group, our Club and Reilly himself this year and beyond :)

Re: #33 - Brent Reilly

Man ya gotta feel for Reilly....he can not get a good crack at it....his first 3 qtr's against WB's were electrifying than a ____in broken wrist....

At the very least its not a leg injury which means he can maintain that core fitness he worked all pre-season for and hit the ground running come round 7-8......

Re: #33 - Brent Reilly

I think he was listed as a test this week at training, so hopefully he could be pushing for selection next week. Its been a real shame his year has been ruined by injury.

At this stage it probably has really, he has missed a large chunk of the year which is a shame, It'd be great to see him back in the side and in form, before Will Wimpson broke his wrist in the round 1 game he was playing brilliantly. Hopefully he'll be back in form by Round 22 so he can return the favour by tearing it up against the Western Bulldogs.

By all accords he is in very good shape DTF

Has been givent he green (best trainer) jersey to wear a couple of times and has slashed his 3km time trial as well.

Injuries prevailing hopefully we'll see him like he was in the first half of round 1 last year.

Just wondering what all you Adelaide supporters thought of Reilly from what i have seen of him he seems to be a very consistent player am i correct in thinking that or is there something im not seeing? because he seems to fly under the radar.

The problem with Reilly has been that he has been teasing us with glimpses of brilliant form for years, but has failed to produce it on a consistent basis. He rarely has terrible games, but his above average games are few and far between.

At his best, he's extremely damaging, but we just don't see it often enough.

Has improved his inside game, but his outside game has been going backwards. For someone known as Radar due to his accurate kicking, he's been making far too many errors by foot and his decision is horrendous at times. Has done some good work as a tagger, but really has failed to be the player he showed signs of becoming at various stages between 04 and 07.

RD 1: 8/10..

Looking like Reilly is set to thrive after a big preseason under Sando... Looked at home all through the NAB Cup and took that great form into Rd 1...

Against the Gold Coast he was the 4th highest possession getter for the Crows with 23 touches (14 kicks / 9 handballs). Also had 6 marks, 2 clearances and 4 tackles.

Also had 5 inside 50's and was 3rd man up at several marking contests...

Perhaps more pleasing was that there were no absolute howlers often associated with him...

His detractors will be very unhappy to notice that 2012 is the first season he is averaging over 20 touches per game :D

Good game for Reilly - 8/10.

Has a true test against the Doggies this week...
