Handy Facts
- Reilly made his debut against StKilda in Rd 15 of 2002, although his performance was one he would rather forget - notching up just one effective contested handball and one tackle for the match.
- He played a further 6 games in 2003 notching up 46 disposals,- 30 kicks, 16 handballs, 19 marks, 4 goals 6 behinds and 2 tackles. His greatest and most memorable moment of 2003 coming against Collingwood in the Pre-Season premiership where he put his body on the line to run backwards and leap infront of a rampaging Anthony Rocca whio was on a hard, fast lead.. Reilly came down with the ball in his hands and slight concussion for his troubles but it was at that very moment that we all knew he was going to be a very special player for the Adelaide Football Club.
- It wasn't until 2004 that Reilly blossomed as a senior player, playing 14 games for Adelaide and accruing 187 disposals - 130 kicks, 57 handballs, 58 marks and 25 tackles. He was rewarded with a nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award for his efforts against Melbourne in Rd 14, amassing 30 disposals - 25 kicks 5 handballs, 9 marks, 1 tackle and 1 behind.
- His good form continued into 2005 as a winger/running defender, also being rotated in Adelaide's midfield off the bench. Reilly averaged 75 minutes game-time in 05 and was benched 83 times - equal 4th most in the competition. Despite his limited game-time, however, Reilly averaged 15 disposals, 2 tackles, 1.6 clearances and 3 inside 50s per game.He also ranked 5th in Adelaide's Score Assists (with 23 score assists and 12 goal assists for the year), whilst kicking 11 goals himself.
- He earned himself his first Brownlow Vote for his efforts against Port in Round 3, 2005 where he had 22 disposals - 17 kicks 5 handballs, 9 marks, 2 goals 1 behind, 4 tackles and 1 free for.
- Reilly improved his numbers considerably in 2006, playing every game and increasing his disposal average by 32% from the previous season (12.9 to 17.0 disposals per game). He also increased his inside 50s to average almost 4 per game (ranking 2nd at Adelaide in 2006).
- Despite developing his game considerably in 2006, he was still Adelaide's most benched player (99 times) and spent an average of 71% of game-time on the ground.
- Reilly spent much time focusing on his work off the ball - and it showed - he averaged a career-high 4 tackles per game and was better at the stoppages where he won a career-high 61 clearances - proving he had made the transition from a purely outside player to a valuable inside-option at the stoppages, he was now a highly versatile midfield player.
- Reilly was again a danger pushing forward in 06 - not only kicking 14 goals but also had 26 Score Assists which ranked 3rd at Adelaide.
- In 2007, Reilly had an injury-interrupted season, he was hampered by persistent ankle injuries which restricted him to his lowest games tally in a season since 2004, playing in 17 of Adelaide's 23 games this year. Despite this, Reilly still managed to increase his disposals average to 19 per game, yet his tackles average halved as did his impact on the scoreboard.
Summary
Reilly has been touted as a future leader at the AFC, and is recognised as being the cleanest disposer of the football at the club whilst always having exceptional awareness of where his teammates are. This in-part played a role in securing him the nickname "Radar" by his teammates - not only a delightful anecdote relating to his look-alike and namesake Radar Reilly from the once-popular Television series M.A.S.H.
Reilly will be looking to cement a more permanent role in Adelaide's midfield as Edwards' and Goodwin's careers come to an end. In his 85 games to date, Radar has been given limited time on ground and will be desperate to spend as much time as possible out on the field, and in the process we may finally see the best of the outstanding qualities he possesses an a top-flight footballer.
I believe within the next 2 years, Reilly will have established himself as one of the competition's elite midfielders and will have been rewarded as such with a leadership role at the AFC.
Reilly is an absolute pleasure to watch on the football field. At stoppages he frequently puts his body on the line to win clearances and works just as hard off the ball to give his team an advantage in the middle. He always seems to have so much more time and space than your average footballer, and delivers to his teammates which such deadly precision and remarkable accuracy.
He is the type of footballer every young midfielder growing up can learn from and perhaps aspire to be; Courageous, always aware, a true leader, highly skilled on both sides of his body with both hand and foot and an all-round fine young gentleman.
