I assumed the natural progression of the answers was 2squared, 4squared, 8squared. Which would also be correct.

then work it out from there...
there is nowhere where it says it is squared

agree but you dont look at an equation that says 11x11 and say its 4
(1+1)x(1x1) = 4, need the brackets
1 to the power of 1 is 1 too
so anyway you look at it 11x11 cannot equal 4

Correct. Given the (lack of) information provided there's several "correct" answers. 36 - which myself and liefs came up with - is one of them.
