Australian ODI squad Announced

Also, were the selections and captaincy for the 2nd ODI some of the dumbest of all time?

We're playing at a venue where the average first innings score over the past decade is 270+, and we've just been put to the sword the game before by their batsmen, who have chased down 300 in a canter, so we essentially select just three bowlers (Starc, Richardson, Tye), two of whom have pretty much no track record of taking wickets at international level, give our all-rounder just one over (Mitch Marsh), and then after a mediocre batting performance without an especially huge total to defend, have to give our part-timers (Stoinis, Head, Finch) 14.2 overs, in which they just leak runs (7.40 per over).

Basically just asking for the exact result they got.

That is the stupidity of the whole thing and schedule.
You picked a one day squad for games that are 5 day apart. WTF?
When we used to have 2 games on weekend I am sure selectors only picked a 13 or so squad for weekend and re-pick again after that. This nonsense of restricting themselves to what was picked over a week ago and already pre-planned to rest Cummings is a joke. Then Hazelwood sick means we virtually down to only Starc as strike bowler and Richardson the other on debut. In past decades guys like Stanlake and Lyon would have got called up the moment they found Hazelwood was sick. You cannot pick this squad with plans to rest Cummings and hope to get away with it in these circumstances. As it was the only two strike bowlers in Starc and Richardson got 6 wickets but the rest are part timers or Tye. Absolutely a joke.
Got what they deserved.

Selectors did a great job for Test series but one day series selection has been a dogs breakfast and will continue to be unless a complete change of strategy of when and how we pick teams for each match at a time. Games were ******* 5 day apart FFS!!!

That's not going to change any time soon. The Big Bash is killing it during the week, ODIs on weekends guarantee bigger crowds and viewers. They will have to adjust to the schedule because I doubt the schedule will change now.

It is very simple to change. The 5 ODI's should all be done in a week.
2 games at SCG. Day off and move to Adelaide for 3rd game and then day off and back to Melbourne for 2 back to back one dayers. Then back to the Big Bash so minimal disruption for both tournaments.
Something like Monday and Tuesday at SCG, Wednesday off, Thurdsay at Adelaide Oval and then Saturday and Sunday at the MCG. Condense it and give Big Bash a break for a week and resume with all players available for Big Bash teams.

So that's your ingenious "solution"? Completely skip two of Brisbane, Perth, Hobart and Canberra to instead play another game in Sydney and Melbourne, the day after you just played one there.
1. Melbourne, 19th January
2. Brisbane, 21st January
3. Sydney, 23rd January
4. Adelaide, 26th January
5. Perth, 28th January

In the future, Hobart and Canberra get games in place of another city from time to time.

Nine days. 5 cities. 5 ODIs. Everyone's happy.

The Big Bash is going gangbusters for CA, no way to put it on hold for a week to accommodate the ODIs. Also, the Big Bash is designed to be completed within the school holidays, taking a week off will make that very difficult. Also don't see them dudding Perth and Brisbane by taking ODIs away, especially when Perth has the new stadium ready to go.

They skipped some cities in World Series Cricket last season and did no harm for crowds.
Having said that, if it is a must to have 5 different cities your scheduled is better than present one.

World Series cricket was 40 years ago...

Not so sure about completing by school holidays. I've heard talk the want the finals further back which would be beyond school holidays. Those kids can goto the ODI's anyway and get back to end of Big Bash after that. At the moment they lose their Finch and White. Week off for ODI's and they get them back and miss nothing.

Exactly my point for you.
That playing two games back to back, the day after each other in both Sydney and Melbourne is ridiculous. This isn't world series cricket. This isn't the NSW/VIC team. This is the Australian team. Brisbane, Perth, Hobart and Canberra are all part of Australia too you know. Not to mention Perth's new stadium.

Yeah. That's exactly what we need. More part timers.

The more options the better. Ideally when he starts bowling he can replace Head for good. We don't lose anything in the bowling, and Turner is a much better player of spin. I'd prefer not to rush Turner, there is no rush.

I was talking more long term anyway.

Long term I see him replacing Head, put him at 4-5, float him up the order if need be. He's one for the next WC for sure.

We had the mix just about right last World Cup imo outside the exclusion of a specialist spinner which I reckon we’ll need to win the 2019 World Cup (looks unlikely now but that should always be the aim for an Aussie national team). I don’t think the game has changed that much tbh. Clarke, Haddin, Johnson, Watson and the 2015 versions of Faulkner and Maxwell were just better than what we’ve got now. We needed to replace the first four well and find ourselves a international standard limited overs spinner that’d be necessary to win anywhere but Australia. Outside of Watson and perhaps Johnson it’s not even close to happening and we’ve lost two players from side due to form in the process.
