You can actually see the reasoning in the Holland decision, and they have explained it.

Although we probably look a batsman short, to be fair there is absolute slim pickings available.

If Steyn is fit then I fear it will be a massacre. Saffers' bowling attack much more able to penetrate than the English outfit here. But I was proved wrong during the Ashes when I doubted the selection of Smarsh.

It won't be a massacre but it will be tough to win if he's firing. His injury in 2014 was key, dominated us in the 2nd test.

Our bowlers will cause headaches there and probably average less than they did in the Ashes. We just need our batsman to stand up. Bancroft, Khawaja.

I love Bird's career is now judged on his bowling on a shocking pitch in his first game back into the side.

Let's just ignore his previous Tests where he's done a pretty decent job (with no continuinity in selection) and his excellent Shield record.
He isn't a bad bowler, he's just very vanilla. A crook Pat Cummins looked far more threatening.

They didn't need Steyn or Morkel to beat us out here last time. Rabada is a jet, Philander will run rings around us if there's any movement and Ngidi looks a likely sort. Gonna be tough.

He should be in SA. Who cares about 3 meaningless games in NZ.

Wonder if the selectors want another look at Warner as captain. His 4 games as ODI skipper in Sri Lanka he did an outstanding job. Very proactive. We lost the first game with Smith as captain, then he went home for a rest. Warner took over and we won them all.
