Heard Ash Browne talking crap about how this is not allowed. WTF is he talking about. Its tactical, and if your opponent is too lazy to tackle you, then bad luck. Is this even a rule or Ash Brown talking s**t.

In country footy you often play against your mates from either school or the town for a different team and one day we were playing our nearest rival and bloke had the ball all by himself in the goalquare. He stopped turned around and held the ball above his head and was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. Didn't it happen in a Carlton Essendon game in the late 80s or early 90s to either Simon madden or Mike Fitzpatrick?

What I'm talking about isn't unsportsmanlike though. Its tactical.

No.

15.11 FREE KICKS – GENERALLY
15.11.1 When Awarded
A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player or a Team where the field
Umpire is of the opinion that:
(a) the Player is engaging in Time Wasting
Should hand some of these out to players who point at the goal, take 30sec, then pass to a teammate 15m to their side.

Disagree with this one. If a player can find a teammate free in front of goal after spending 30 seconds lining up for a shot than it's an indictment on their opposition not them.

It's risk vs reward. If you mess it up then you miss out on a shot on goal and give your opposition opportunity to rebound.

They are given 30 seconds for a shot on goal. Isn't it around 8 seconds otherwise?

Personally I'd tell the umpire that I'm kicking for goal when I'm in the back pocket.

And this is why it is a problem.

The rule should be exactly the same no matter where you are on the field. A FF kicking for goal shouldnt suddenly have different rules than a defender taking a mark at half back.

Its one of my biggest bug bears of umpiring right now: a defender takes the mark and is immediately called to play on - its bullshit, that is only allowed because they AFL wants an artificially attacking game.

Just give everyone the same amount of time - maybe make it 15sec. Forwards will very quickly learn once a few more get pinged for taking too long.

If the rule around the ground is 8 seconds, once the player taking the shot for goal has it longer for 8 seconds they must take a shot for goal. if they pass it, then its a free kick against them. Allowances made if they sit it on top of the goal square or something like that as you have to allow for shanks etc that don't register a score or go out of bounds on the full.

Considering most umpires umpire like they haven't actually read the rules can we please not alert them to any time wasting rules if they actually exist?

Imagine how abused this rule would become. Razor and Pannell would actually go into meltdown at the thought of how much easier it would be to influence matches.

And of course the total melts when Danger, Selwood, Dusty, Buddy etc never get pinged.
