Tas 2018 Tasmania Election - LIBERAL WIN

What rubbish - a line of convenience from those that lost. The gaming issue was an emotive fringe issue, bottom line is the sitting govt had no strong reason to be ousted by a reasonably new ALP (the fundamentals were doing well).
We had wall to wall ads from bloody boxing day onwards, well before the election was even called, and the Libs ended up outspending the rest by a factor of 10:1. It's a bit disingenuous to accept all that money, spend it on blanket advertising and then claim it had no impact. Not to mention the blatant lies in those ads about the nonexistent potential job losses that would come from millions of dollars being prevented from being siphoned out of the state to one Sydney family.

We had wall to wall ads in every election we have had. Sure - a section of the business community which was being made central to an emotive policy will defend itself but the reality is people had no real reason to vote out the incumbent. Saying it all came down to money as well is quite insulting to the electorate.

Anyway - hats off to Bec White for establishing a good footing to win majority govt in 4 years time. A good strategy of outflanking the greens and getting some of their base back that migrated to the greens after some pretty terrible years with Bryan Green in office. As well as a healthy swing towards them, they sit in a good position to attack the 13 seat majority at the next election. Baffles me that O’Connor hasn’t called White out yet on a pretty clear attack on their shifting base. ALP to take a 15 seat majority in 4 years time.

She's much too good for state parliament.

Labor should look at getting her to run in Denison in the next Federal election. I think she'd get enough lefty support to oust Wilkie, and it would give them another really talented woman, and a really great speaker for them to fast-track into Cabinet.

Really hope Labor keeps the no pokies policy. If one state gets that up the other four will follow. But 4 years is ages away, could easily be a new leader, and the careerists might put it in the too hard/who cares basket.

Probably one or two more election cycles before getting to feds. Young mum (as in baby only born recently) so that may weigh in.

The pokies issue has struck a nerve in the community so it’s not a case of if, but when. Gaming as it is right now will change into a different form. Im

Respectfully disagree.

Hodgman deserved a second term with Tasmania in the best overall shape for years.

The last 4 years has been a significant improvement on everything that has transpired since Jim Bacon was premier.

Well this is the thing. How much of that is actually due to State Politicians? What have they actually done to improve things?

They all do it. So its not just Lib or Lab.

Labour had a long period in power, most of the last of it was dominated by the after effects of the Global economic crisis. So all Governments look bad at that time.

Much of the recovery has come from small business benefiting from the huge rise in tourism & housing/ building development. Chinese Premier Xi Jinping visit in 2014 lead to a huge rise in interest & visits from China & Asia. Mona has had an effect with Australian & other International visitors. The world economy recovery has helped things like Incat fast ferries. They've grown with many more orders from overseas.

Most of the growth has actually been around Hobart. Thats noticed by the huge rise in house prices & the failure of the building industry to keep up.

The North west has lagged badly. So how did they maintain their vote?

No doubt the mass of advertising & had an effect. How much & specifically from whom is a point of debate. As it should be.

I suspect when they release the donations disclosures the issue will rocket straight back into the headlines. This might be a lose the battle win the war scenario.
The donations will appear behind various trusts and the like, Clubs NSW and the Farrell Family will barely be named directly. And it will be forgotten in four years time.

They actually lost the most ground in the North West, where the previous vote was unsustainable and primarily due to the absolute disaster created by the Labor/Green alliance in that area.

Recovery in the North West is slower and still hindered by shipping issues for agriculture. A solution for that was vetoed by Jackie Lambie voting against a shipping reform, that would have had international shipping return to the Burnie port.

No I walk.

What are you getting at?
Lots of improvements to highway surfaces, safety and duel carriage for a lot more which only has happened in the last 4 years. My point is that it’s easy to say they have ridden a stronger economic outcome but they have made some good decisions which went fairly unnoticed. I drove on both highways this week.

And thats it? Geez NWC coast folk are easy pleased. I thought Jobs were important?

Would that be part of the National highway system?

No that’s not it - just making a small point. The NwC folks are easily displeased and carry a grudge.

Ok, you're allowed to say that. Saying to was about some roads looked a bit ridiculous.

The reason they've done so little on the NWC & North, is that the South has benefited from the 2 things I said. Xi jinping visit & Mona gave a lot of attention & kicked things off. No Government can pretend over that. It was private effort & some luck.

The pokies just funnel money out of communities, like NWC towns & into taxes & the rich family in Sydney.

Given that did they cut off their nose to spite their face?

Yep - they got good fortune and made good out of it. Both parties have enjoyed pokies in their coffers to some degree that is true. The biggest issue for the NWC is how do they expand the halo effect from tourism but that equally applies to many towns in Lyons that unless they are within 30 minutes drive, they miss out (it ain’t just NWC that misses out). The other issue is the dairy industry that doesn’t seem to have kicked on the coast like it should. The coast was a mining and timber dominated region which had many down stream businesses that relied. They haven’t worked out what to do up there but that being said, cradle valley visitation has doubled. Key is what industry can they work on to replace the timber and mining.

Only for Barnaby to put his dick somewhere it's not wanted a day or two later and take all the limelight.

Like parliamentary pay rises and entitlements, they'll look serious, say all the right things then do nothing. They'll engineer the focus shifting and that will be it until another election somewhere with advertising inequalities and the loser will complain.
