There are actually less free kicks per game awarded than even a decade ago and as a proportion teams tend to play on (use the advantage rule) far more so if anything games are less likely to be influenced by perceived umpiring bias than even a decade ago.

Of course, I could point out that during the 2016 GF the Bulldogs played on 7 times to 1 from a free kick negating any stoppage of play advantage from those free kicks anyway, but the salty narrative is too much fun to read :cool:

Whilst everyone from the media to the avge BF fan was already highlighting the extraordinary abnormality by mid season, i doubt anyone expected it to continue thru to the entire finals series.
Bloody shame Dan Hannebery has never been the same since, and his career is still on edge...somehow he managed to give away yet another bizzarre free kick.

The AFL should have apologised to every single club that thought they were in with a chance, instead of just admitting the one game (GF) was an abortion.

Not sure what you can draw from this. Not levelling this accusation against Sydney, but a “dirty” team would lose the free kick count most times, wouldn’t it? You’d be better off looking for sustained variances rather than annual results.

They're just statistical facts. You can make anything out of it that u want, as u just did by going deep into bizzaroland rather than entertaining the possibility of the bleeding obvious. If Sydney were a dirty team, every mob was.

The entire world even started factoring in the umps treatment of blokes like McLean going into the GF, as a serious and actual legitmate premiership factor. Then on GF day, the entire world saw that everything they had discussed, laughed and joked about for the season, was actually real.
Then afterwards, the AFL came out for the first time and actually admitted to at least some of the multitudes of "glaring errors".... that for some strange reason only ever seemed to favour 1 team. It was nothing new. Nothing unusual. Every club had copped a slice of it. In fact it was PREDICTABLE by the time the GF came around.
 
Geelong Port,

Dixon play on call for his 30 second time even though he was already walking in and time had started while Taylor was laying on him for 10 seconds after he took the mark. Danger was about 1 metre from
him when we was trying to run in for his set shot too.

Horrific call and then not one 30 second call made before or after that in the history of the AFL when there was a heap that went over.

Not sure I should wade into this discussion but Richmond had the most frees against last year of any team. (528 against, 470 for) Crows had 500 against, 497 for. in 2017 WB had the most frees for but they dropped to 11th in 2018. In 2014 Richmond had the most frees for at 427. This was the year they scraped into the 8 after winning a heap of games at the back end of the season. A comparasion would look like this:

2014 vs 2017 Richmond were two very different styles of play. 2014 was lucky, 2017 was methodical. I think the differnece is due to Richmond's tackling in the forward line they were happy to concede free kicks in their own forward line. This is prehaps best shown in the St Kilda loss in round 16. St Kilda were far and away the better side but Richmond won the free kick count slightly. St Kilda didn't let Richmond get the ball forward so they couldn't lay the forward half tackles and potentially give away free kicks (high or low tackles, for example). Notwithstanding the strength of the respective teams; Richmond beat both Brisbane and Gold Coaast away convincingly whilst losing the free kick count.

What this also shows (from a very small sample) is the Adelaide Oval crowd is worth 3.75 free kicks per game....
