MCG to host GF through to 2057

The AFL can't have it both ways. Either they play the Grand Final at the home ground of the team that deserves it, or they make sure every non-Victorian team has at least 4 games a year at the MCG in case they make the Grand Final.
How do you decide which team deserves it? Unless you play every team twice, once at home and once away, then the ladder is compromised.
In 2014 the Swans had 3 games at the G, would an extra game have made any difference?
In 2016 the Swans played at the G the same number of times as the Bulldogs.
In 2017 the Crows had 3 games at the G, would an extra game have made any difference?

So 50-60k isn't enough for a GF?

The NFL says hi.

Just consider if a GF was held at the Adelaide Oval - you don't have to worry about MCC or AFL members - 50k stadium for all competing club fans. Can charge top $ like the NFL and probably still generate more cash than a GF at the G.

It can easily happen though

I mean Collingwood, Melbourne, Richmond, Hawthorn all have around 50 AFL home games between them at the venue, with Geelong having an additional 5 games. If at least 24 of those games are played against non-Victorian opponents then that is going to be 3 games at the MCG on average for non-Victorian clubs.
Geelong have 2 home games at the MCG, 9 at KP. You keep spitting out numbers, but they're always wrong?

Doctor Gero this has to be the dumbest post I have seen on Bigfooty in a long time

Spend $100 million on KP stadium for the club to fold/merge :drunk:

Stop sniffing the bath salt

Oh you'll be fine for a couple more decades Princess. But after that....

100 mil isnt a big upgrade. Are you expecting 50000 more seats?

Let just create a new tradition that any time an "interstate" club plays a final they get to play it at home, except the GF which will be at the MCG. Fair trade off I'd say.

Sydney played at the MCG 3 times in 2016 before the Grand Final, I don't think one more game would have helped.

MCG can hold 100k, the next biggest in Perth can hold 60k...

How the * is this breaking news? Do people really think the AFL is going to give up 40k worth of seats and dosh? Are you Vics really that parochial to think you've been given something that was always and has always been held there, acting like it's a bonus when the Docklands surrounds redevelopment has been in the works for the last 10 years. So much angst in one thread over nothing

Breaking News...really.

I appreciate the feedback from the interstaters nonetheless

This forever. So many nuffies on here saying that an interstate GF will seat less fans.

Not if they dont invite the corporate flogs.

They can still have their s**t at the MCG on the day. They can bring in some big tv screens and put them on the ground for them to "watch" and meanwhile the actual GF has 50k rabid, actual fans making the smaller ground feel bigger.

I don’t mind that the GF is staying at the G, never really thought it would move.
This deal apparently means millions of dollars extra for all the Victorian clubs, each year.
I take it that MCG tenants like Melbourne and Hawthorn that currently sell their home games interstate won’t have to do this anymore? Freo play Melbourne in Darwin this year, in a Melbourne home game that should be at the G.
Pretty simple, the AFL shouldn’t let MCG tenants sell home games against non Victorian sides.

Good reason to quarantine them at the state border

Both WA and SA have just built a new stadium or renovated their previous ground, perhaps if they forked out and ensured their ground held a decent crowd size they would have a leg to stand on.

Optus holds just over 60,000 which is just over half the MCG, they had every opportunity to make that ground 80-90,000 but chose not to.

Interstate fans grievance should be with their state governments, Vic shouldn't be punished because interstate clubs cheaped out on smaller grounds and cheaper LED's.

Obviously not bright - do Adelaide and Perth have the population of Melbourne? A 51k stadium for a city with population of 1.5m against a stadium of 100k for a city with a population of 4m - yeh do the calculations - maths not your strong point.

I'm not unhappy the GF it is at the G, just want to see how the non-Victorian sides gain from this.

Didnt you hear? The AFL is gonna cover the 10k cost of a charter plane and let us on the G for an extra hour.

Whata treat.

Remind me how many sports in the world you can get in for $30 and go to the GF for a few hundred dollars if you buy the appropriate membership.
That may be the case if you live in Victoria, but this decision means there is next to no chance an interstate fan can watch a grand final for anywhere near that kind of money.
According to 2017 Roy Morgan research 62% of AFL fans don't live in Victoria. Thats the AFL turning their noses up a a fairly large portion of fans

AFL CEO is from SA. Commission Chairman is from WA. But this is all Vic bias and not an obvious decision. :drunk:

That's interesting, fourth tier on the GSS?

Apparently the Northern/Members/Ponsford redevelopment holds about 55k currently so replicating that could take it to 110k, or more considering there is virtually no third level of the redevelopment (due to broadcasters, boxes, etc.), yet level 3 goes all around the GSS.

It seems an obscene capacity, but they'd still fill it on GF day, with ANZAC Day/eve, Boxing Day, big prelims probably likely to push up from 80-90k to 90-100k. Still, you'd hope they've factored in a way to close down much of the new GSS in the event of very small crowds as the overheads per game will keep going up if the entire ground is open.

State Government should have put a proviso on providing the money. THE AFL must give completing club members access to something like 70,000 GF tickets and 30,000 for the general public.

The general public aren't entitled to s**t on GF day, you want access, you buy a membership like everyone else does.

Your government thinks it has half a billion spare, it's clearly got all essential services covered and gets too much GST share. Time for the grants commission to step in

That $500million isn't being spent directly on the MCG, it's being spread around other areas, such as upgrading access to the stadium so that we don't have to close down the streets to funnel our gigantic crowds in and out of our stadiums.

A bit like that new footbridge you guys haven't built yet.

You think McGuire's smug now just wait until the Collingwood component is announced. Just a guess, but McGuire seems all over this and he doesn't do anything without there being some benefit/s to Collingwood.

But but but, you're already getting the benefit of home Grand Finals!
