Apparently it's time to spend big and stimulate the economy again.

I mean as long as they win office next year who cares about the next 3 generations. Reminds me of Howards 2007 moose head gfc epidemic.

According to a Treasury report in 2008, between 2004 and 2007, the mining boom and a robust economy added $334 billion in windfall gains to the budget surplus. Of this, the Howard Government spent, or gave away in tax cuts, $314 billion, or 94 per cent.

Epic lulz. Returning cash to its rightful owners is giving away money! Typical Fairfax muppetry.

Lol since when should bogans be exempt from paying tax? If bogans get tax rebates then why not PAYG earners? (Who pay a far higher rate of tax to begin with). The money wasn't given back to wealthy people it was given to bogans. I knew the professionals on 120-200k wages who got nothing back at all, simply because they were employed and not bosses.

Who cares anyway, haven't you heard we're going on a spending spree! Spend spend spend spend

That the government didn't spend that $20 billion dollars is amazing.

What does that average, about $2,000 per person over charged in tax?

A surplus is great but a government that has $300 billion in the savings account will have zero chance of keeping their jobs, everyone can think of a group who need more spending and the opposition would spend it all in their election promises.

The election wins aren't a sure thing except when looking back..

Take off your A Dip (Fin) goggles.

Try engaging in the real world, the one where people create wealth and employment rather than just leach off other taxpayers.

Your post makes no sense. If they should have spent it then people havent been overtaxed. If they were over taxed, then they should have received tax cuts.

Epic failure to understand. Money only exists in a social context. Tax isn't optional/ It's the public money. And rightfully so. The repeatedly lie that money owned to society as tax is somehow still rightfully the property of the person required to pay it,. just shows the rejection of the very concept of society and idiocy of the the right,

However if you penalise one industry for making "super profits" then go after all industries. The "Four Pillars" policy means those banks have had a protected status, surely their super profits should be gone after as well.

WA certainly squandered the money that came in through royalties during the most recent boom. Though the Federal Govt chopping our share of the GST certainly didn't help.
Because companies don’t make resources.

Because companies don’t make resources.
Mining companies pay a royalty to the relevant state government, on top of taxes all companies pay, for the privilege of mining that state's resources.

You compare Norway and Australia. Norway set themselves up and Australia not so much.
So why target one industry? Why not target all those that are making "super profits"? The big 4 banks benefit from the 4 pillars policy so go after them as well. Wouldn't that help set us up?

Absolute tripe. Its taxpayers money (and lets not forget that large swathes of the population contribute nothing). As for being optional, well actually it is.

You try and tax me at 70% then I will pay nothing. Its this sort of delusional ignorance on the idiot left that leaves them failing to understand why the Laffer curve exists.

As for society, even more tosh. The state is the enemy of society. Its a well known fact that higher taxes ensure less charitable contributions per head. Why rely on yourself, help your neighbour etc when you can just bludge off the state?

Da tax payer is in debt

Just sayin

Wayne Swan is ze messiah. He produced a land of milk and honey, gave everyone a bmw and increased the average breast size by 30% and caused Hawthorn to win a few flags.

Demi God.

He even reached out beyond the grave and showered the dead with cash.

No limit to his omnipotence and benevolence. Australian of the century.
