Why would a kid from SA re-signing be a big deal? Surprise us and do something special like signing a Victorian.

Then you don't actually know what addiction is, and what causes it. It's all in the brain, stop thinking alcohol and drugs, think pornography, and you will understand that anything can become a genuine addiction, and gaming is right up there!

Fair. It seems to be a little more prevalent than I thought, but I guess I was more thinking in terms of esport type games rather than MMORPGs which seem to be less likely to result in addiction. I think the important thing is to differentiate between people who play games “too much” and those who are actually showing serious addiction symptoms.

I think one important note is that it can take intense cognitive effort, and you can be chasing a state of “flow” in which challenge and competence are perfectly matched. This apparently correlates negatively with addiction, meaning that people who are playing seeking an intense challenge are different to those playing more mindlessly.

pr0n addiction wouldn’t be the same as gaming, as it has a different effect on your brain - it’s doesn’t take any cognitive effort for example. If you spend as much time watching pornography as gaming you’d be at a much, much greater risk of addiction.

So Burton's successful 2017 fitness program was really spill over from the guy before?

I think it’s more that he didn’t have the time to do what he wanted to do because of time restraints put on him by Pyke who wanted to change up his tactics a bit.

I reckon Poulos was finally getting it right when they gave him the ass though

Dew dropping Lyons is one of the strangest selections I have ever seen. Why would you drop your best mid?

He's been in shitty form for several weeks. If anything it's a really respectable move.

We know that not everyone who drinks regularly, is, or becomes, an alcoholic. Research has shown there are many other factors involved, including genetics, and hereditary triggers. The article you quote that debunks gaming addiction is agenda-driven in my opinion. They simply equate the level of dopamine (pleasure release) from gaming with eating a good meal. While true, this is sooooo simplistic! I might get a hit of dopamine from a great meal, but I don't keep eatin that same meal for 10 hours (or more) straight! The mere fact that people can develop eating addictions debunk that silly defence immediately! Just because eating food produces 10 times less dopamine than a drug, doesn't mean that you can't become addicted to it ... the same goes with gaming, gambling, shopping, etc. They leave out so many other factors, including the role of the prefrontal cortex, the hippocampus and the amygdala. All of these three combine to store information about cues associated with the desired substance or activity, so that it can be located again. These memories help create a conditioned response — intense craving — whenever the person encounters those environmental cues.

I am interested in this, because a close family member of mine suffers from serious shopping addiction. The dopamine released when one shops is no more than released when eating a good meal, yet many people, including this family member, have developed a chronic addiction. They have to shop everyday, they find excuses to shop, they lie about where they have gone and where they are going, they have personality changes and mood swings when they don't get to go, and the opposite when they are able to go, and so on.

Addiction manifests in three distinct ways: craving for the object of addiction, loss of control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences. In the case of my family member, these include financial difficulties and marital breakdown.... Nothing could stop them in this self destructive course.

You are correct in saying not all gamers are addicts. My wife likes to shop, but shows no signs of addiction... Thank goodness!

Clurey's 50 was from about the same spot as the one Hawthorn kicked a goal from in the first quarter. Clurey was taken to 70m out.

The commentators pointed out with a Hawthorn 50 that it was a short one and the umpires should be able to measure it easily as the mowed sections are 10 metres each. They were surprisingly quiet when Clurey was only afforded about 2 and a half sections.
