Its obvious they looks to be a gulf between the top 3 sides and the rest all three of those teams have 140%

As of today, but this time last year we were third last

Wow, there are two Carlton nutters on the main board Game Day thread arguing that the Blues are already “nearly” at the same level as the Swans and will surpass them as early as next year.

Who are their talented kids? Cripps, Curnow then...

Watching last night, i can't see much on their list i'd want. All the same type of player, and no grunt. They remind me of Melbourne's "rebuild" under Neeld. Then Roos came in and had to clean it out and start again. SOS may have dug Carlton into a deep hole, unless they can buy a midfield.

Weitering, Petrevski-Seton, Pickett, Dow, Silvagni, Garlett, Fisher, Kennedy, Marchbank.

Cripps, Curnow & Weitering (having a down year) provide the cream.
The rest have all shown they can play at AFL level at a good standard. Chances are that some will step up even further, given the right development.
Clearly they have some holes but they have enough talent to play to a system & be far more competitive than they have been. That is all down to the coach, he has changed from developing their game plan into a system to coaching for his livelihood. That style of coaching (Malthouse, Pagan, Neeld, Bailey, Wallace etc) creates a vicious circle of underperformance.

Just thinking if we are Geelong of 2014 they were barely winning and had the worst percentage of the top 4 finished with 113% and went out in straight sets.

Our percentage is more a reflection of the fluency in our play rather than our ability to score.
Our forward entries are a well documented joke & we haven't consistently been moving the ball very well out of D50 the whole year.
IMO we have steadily and gradually improved each week so we are heading in the right direction but if those things don't click in the next 12 weeks then we will definitely have an issue come finals.

Heavens above we are only just approaching the halfway mark of the season and you have us out of finals in straight sets because that happened to Geelong in 2014!!!!!!

Gimme a break........

Just a observation thats all i tend to think percentage is a better indicator than wins/losses :)
Well maybe this will make you feel better - this time last year Richmond were fourth with a percentage of 111 and that turned out okay for them ;)

You only need to win, that’s all that matters!
nah mate you need to be able to blow teams away, the premier always has a superior percentage. We were clinical in our grand final years. Going the way we're going we'll get unstuck 2-3 games into finals if we're lucky, no chance we can grind out results one after another against the better sides. Very reminiscent of 2013 and 2015. We don't execute and put teams to the sword the way we used to, and when we play the better sides its a struggle to scrape over

No point being able to blow one team away if you’re going to lose to another. Finding a way to win is far more important! Our SCG record this year is testament to that and the primary reason why we’re not on top of the ladder!

Clinical in their grand final years? What a load of garbage. 2005 we hardly blew teams away, the complete opposite. Same in 2006. Selective memory issues.

Not the last two years - 2017 Richmond 118.3% 2016 Bulldogs 115.4%

we could say the bulldogs were definitely and anomaly, and don't forget the tigers did have that blowout against stkilda. But they both were absolutely blowing teams away at the back end of the season and finals. We just don't seem to have the ability to bury teams anymore. If we have a few more games just scraping through and don't put the lower teams away convincingly then i can't see how we can go into the finals with confidence. The other 2 had a reason to be confident

Look we can win it no doubt. And we would all say that we can beat any team currently in the top 8, but we would also say that we could easily lose to them all aswell. To win the GF you need to win 3-4 games in a row against the best in teams in the comp. When you're playing on that knife's edge you can easily fall the wrong way and before we know it we'll be out losing by a goal and with a long preseason ahead.

Been a few of those since 2014. Every year is different and you need to move on but I for one still get driven to drink by that day in 2014 and only a premiership will be redemption for it. Honestly thought 2014 & 2016 we were the best side and just hope we have not gone back to the well once to often. We look dour, slow and weary and have a massive problem with the consistency of both our stars and depth players. Bottom 6 if you like. Positives are there is massive improvement possible and we are gutting out wins without playing to our capabilities. That has to continue against the Saints with the hope of hitting our straps against the Eagles who I genuinely believe we have played our best footy against this year in Rd 1. They had no Kennedy and it was probably 3 quarters of our best but still it was a good brand of footy that stuck out imo. Just my take.

Coincidence rather than a logical progression to a premiership. Reality is, those teams around us are destroying opposition, we are not. This season feels more like that Kangaroos start of a few years ago where they were clearly the worst undefeated team of all time and missed the finals. Our games against Eagles and Tigers will be one hell of a reality check.
