Tom Mitchell - Why the hype?

*star ;)

I think we overuse the word superstar. GAJ is a superstar, Buddy is a superstar, guys like Mitchell aren't.
Meh, GAJ is just a forward-running passenger these days. Was a superstar.

Mitchell is one of the best ball magnets the game has ever seen. Superstar.

As for the one paced midfielders - JPK is a star and big game player. But Parker loves to disappear in big games (see Grand Finals as reference, completely disappears) though he'll punish the poor teams. Meanwhile Mitchell is consistently good in big (all) games.

JPK is an inside beast. Like Patrick Cripps his contested possessions are definitely contested. Extra contested, or super contested if you will.

Parker is a reasonable comparison to Mitchell.

Mitchell is a decent player but the talk of him being in brownlow contention or even in the top ten midfielders of the game is overselling him IMO. AFL player ratings gets bagged a fair bit but it takes into account impact of possessions and before this round, it rated Mitchell as the 41st best performed player in this season, and doesn't have him in the top 15 midfielders. I don't know if that's too low but it's certainly a more accurate rating than most hawks fans give him.

Extra contested or super contested? Well which is it?

He is the Brownlow favourite.

Sportsbet has him @ $2.85 with Dusty second favourite @ $6.

If Tom Mitchell isn’t that good like you claim then how do you explain the Hawthorn midfield beating Geelong, Collingwood, Melbourne and Port Adelaide? Mitchell is close to leading the Brownlow medal voting right now. He’s playing even better then last year.

Ha!
Currently 2nd in the AFL coaches votes, and clear favourite for the Brownlow......but player ratings...:rainbow:

Another in the long line of Hawthorn stars that aren't really stars according to bigfooty. Jordan Lewis is still a talentless thug according to some people on this site, Hodge could only get cheap possies at half back, Sammy was a plodder, so on, heard it all before.
Until they leave then they are stars and huge losses.

Well Lewis has not exactly set the world on fire in Melbourne colours.

Which is why Clarkson told him he wouldn't get another contract.

Was a star at the Hawks, but bigfooty argued otherwise.

Not sure if you could be more wrong if you actually tried. Everyone regrets the JPK trade and no fans wanted it to go through, but given he was behind the likes of Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge, Sewell and Burgoyne in the pecking order it was the right move for JPK.

I'm sure a bunch of fans are unhappy but no one involved in that trade nine years ago would regret it. You've got a player surplus to requirements who wants to trade - you have to trade him and get someone on your list who can fill a gap that you have. That's basic list management. Hawks are among the best at it and had a fantastic record of success in the six years after trading Kennedy.

He is the favourite amongst punters, that doesn't really make him the favourite though, given most punters are losers in general...

B&F in a premiership year, how quickly people forget his 2014 where he carried our midfield with Mitchell out for 8 weeks

He'll pollwell because the umps are among those blinded by stats. That's why Priddis has a Charlie in his drawers (and almost stole a second one).

He was BOG in Round 1 and 2. He will also poll votes in every game that Hawthorn have won.

Remember when the main board used to pot Buddy as overrated, lazy and selfish? Funny when he made the switch up north those threads seemed to disappear..

Mate not sure about the rest but Hawthorns midfield certainly didnt beat Ports Midfield.

Port won stoppage clearances, centre clearances and contested posession stats convincingly that game.

What the Hawks did win that day was the free kicks 31 to 22 including several 50m penalties paid on or around the goalsquare.
Contested possessions in that game were 124-120. Basically dead level.

The stats that mattered were:

59-38 inside 50s (delivery from our midfield)
75-63 Intercepts
48 more possessions hawks
47 more marks hawks
