2019 & 2020 Player Movements and News Thread

Season 2018 finished a couple of weeks ago but there's been a fair bit of news about regarding the upcoming season for a number of clubs. With player movements and other news ramping up plus with Best and Fairest awards all run and won, this thread will be the place to be for all your WAFL news during the off-season and coming pre-season as we get ready for season 2019.

- West Perth ruckman Chris Keunen has retired with the 35 year old calling it a day after 206 matches with the Falcons. Fellow teammates Andrew Strijk and Jay van Berlo have not yet made a decision on their intentions for next year.
- Perth are interested in having former Fremantle defender Michael Johnson back at the club for season 2019. Johnson played his junior football with the Demons and appeared in 41 senior games with the Dees before being drafted by Fremantle in the 2004 rookie draft. It's believed the Demons will offer Johnson a coaching role at the club if he does not play for them in 2019. Perth are also expected to gain the services of former West Coast Eagles' player Simon Tunbridge who took a year off from the game in 2018.
- Jarrad Schofield has left Subiaco after six seasons in charge, taking up a coaching position with Port Adelaide in the AFL. Colts' coach Beau Wardman is the frontrunner to take the vacant League coaching position at the Lions.
- West Perth has sacked coach Bill Monaghan after coaching the club for 10 seasons. Monaghan was told four days after the Grand Final loss to Subiaco that his contract would not be renewed for 2019 and is set to be replaced by Geoff Valentine who accepted the vacant coaching job at East Fremantle last month only to backtrack on the appointment the next morning. Valentine appears to be the only candidate for the job with a senior assistant at another club allegedly being told not to bother applying for the post.
- The WAFL is also set to have a tenth club with West Coast Eagles to enter their own team into the competition from next season, completing their split from East Perth. The entry of the Eagles into the WAFL is set to be confirmed in the coming weeks with a coaching announcement to also follow. Former Brisbane player Marco Paparone has been suggested as potential leader for the team and could also be selected as a rookie by the Eagles for 2019.
- Luke Toia has been sounded out as a potential coach for East Perth following the Royals' split from their AFL alignment with West Coast Eagles. Current coach Luke Webster will not be in the role with the Eagles and Royals no longer aligned.
- Scott Ballem has quit the new West Perth board with tensions ongoing as part of Bill Monaghan's controversial sacking from the West Perth coaching position. Ballem is the former president of the club but was sacked and the board dissolved during half time of the Falcons' first semi final win over Claremont with administrator KordaMentha acting on behalf of the WAFC. Ballem and football director Peter Cutler (who played a role in the dismissal of Monaghan as coach) were retained on the board with WAFC approval as part of their $250,000 rescue package for the Falcons.
- East Fremantle have signed former West Perth coach Bill Monaghan as their coach for the next three seasons, tying him to the club until the end of 2021. Former player Brad Dodd has joined the Sharks as their football manager after spending the last two seasons coaching at Peel Thunder. The Sharks also look set to lose Jon Marsh to Victoria and also 2017 Lynn Medal winner Jayden Schofield.
- South Fremantle have lost Ryan Cook, Ashton Hams and Shane Hockey to retirement. Hams announced his retirement before the end of the season while Cook and Hockey announced their intentions to retire at the Hughes Medal on Friday Night.
- Cody Ninyette will have a delayed start to pre-season at Perth after tearing the meniscus in his knee playing social basketball, an injury which required surgery. It's believed he will be able to commence training after Christmas. Ninyette won the Demons' leading goalkicker award, tying with Kristian Cary on 26 goals and remains a slight chance to be picked up in the coming AFL drafts.

Seems as good a place as any to talk about the Eagles' reserves side. Anyone heard anything on the criteria for the top-up players?

Each team will play each other twice over 21 rounds and the Eagles will play all games at their opponents' home ground next season, meaning 10 home games for the nine existing clubs. Seems a bit of a shame to do away with a third derby, but I don't know if that could've been squeezed in without compromising the fixture.

In other news Jeremy Barnard has been appointed coach at East Perth, Beau Wardman moves from Subi's colts to the seniors job and Geoff Valentine unsurprisingly takes Monaghan's job at West Perth. The only seat left is head coach of the Eagles' reserves, I assume either Luke Webster will stay in the role or someone else from the AFL coaching staff will fill it.

Measures would be taken to ensure the Eagles reserves side would be competitive in the state league, while not being unfairly dominant.

Bit vague

My guess for the top ups would be retired players in west coasts current staff(Petrie), next gen academy lads, father/sons, mature age country blokes playing in country leagues

- East Perth has appointed former player Jeremy Barnard as coach for the next three seasons. Barnard played in East Perth's three premierships in 2000, 2001 and 2002 as captain and has spent the past 11 seasons in Melbourne as a player and coach. Barnard spent time as a coach at Sandringham and Williamstown in the VFL before going onto coach the Sandringham Dragons to the 2016 premiership in the TAC Cup.
- The WAFL will expand to 10 teams in 2019 with West Coast Eagles being granted a license to enter the WAFL from next season with their alignment split from East Perth becoming official on Wednesday night. The Eagles will need to contribute an extra $330,000 per season for the privilege, putting the total club to the club of having a team in the WAFL at around $800,000 per season with a one-off license fee next season of $90,000 to be split between the remaining nine clubs. The $800,000 per season includes the existing contribution of $467,000 per season, $45,000 shared between the other nine clubs, $230,000 to East Perth to reinstate funding equal to other non-partner clubs and $54,000 associated with competition costs for extra fixturing (umpires, statistics, match-day staff etc.).
- Beau Wardman has been appointed Subiaco's new League coach, replacing Jarrad Schofield who will take up a coaching position with Port Adelaide in the AFL. Wardman has coached Subiaco's Colts for the past two seasons and lead them to the premiership in 2018.
- Michael Farmer will become Subiaco's new Football Manager, replacing Daniel Vidovich who has moved onto a new job opportunity outside of the football industry.
- The West Coast Eagles may use retired players as top-up players with the Eagles set to have their own side in the WAFL from 2019. CEO Trevor Nisbett suggested former player Drew Petrie could be used to help out with the side when required next season. It's also believed that former Brisbane Lions' player Marco Paparone could take a up a leadership position with the WAFL side and could also be drafted as a rookie by the Eagles for next season.
- West Perth have signed Geoff Valentine as League coach for 2019. Valentine had been interested in the East Fremantle coaching position and was alleged by the Sharks to have accepted the post only to pull out of the deal the next morning. Valentine recently said in a radio interview that he was offered the position at East Fremantle but wouldn't accept the role until he had been through the club. Valentine also went onto say he had been interviewed for the West Perth coaching position the day before the Falcons' semi final win against Claremont but did not confirm his interest in the role until after the completion of the season and after Monaghan had left the club.
- West Perth have announced several signings, including those of Michael Lourey, Aaron Black and Tyler Keitel.
- Swan Districts have lost two players to retirement with Todd Banfield and Kirk Ugle deciding to hang up the boots.

Nothing yet although I imagine most of their players will come from the amateur and country leagues with the club maybe allowed to recruit a few senior marquee players (from other WAFL clubs or maybe some recently retired players) in order for them to have some senior players in the side. I'd imagine they'd have a list of 15-20 players they'll be allowed to call upon from, maybe a few more if required.

18 games per season is in line with the other state leagues who play the same amount of games. Would be too much of a compromise to the fixture to play extra games to accommodate derbies and rivalries.

Todd Banfield has retired Ljp86

I very much doubt the Eagles Reserves will be dominant, simply because the composition of the team running onto the field, will be compromised.

Even with a good run with injuries, they will be using “fill in” players.

Just take a look at the SANFL AFL stand Aligned sides...both ended up towards the bottom this year....can't see WCE reserves doing any better....though money talks I guess

I’m a family friend and it’s the second time they’ve jumped the gun. A month ago they announced his signing on Facebook and Twitter and had to withdraw it. Same old same old
No WAFL club is going to stand in the way of an AFL contract. Players can commit to clubs pending the AFL draft.

Sounds like SD have been jumping the gun saying Jesse Glass Mac has signed on with SD tho...can see Subi offering the fella an AFL lifeline.....

- Retired Fremantle midfielder Danyle Pearce has relocated back to Adelaide after accepting a job alongside former Port Adelaide teammate Daniel Motlop and looks set to play for former club Sturt in the SANFL in 2019.
- Daniel Acres, the older brother of St. Kilda midfielder Blake has signed with East Perth for 2019 after spending 2018 at Cervantes. Joining him is fellow Cervantes teammate Jarrod Best while former player Marcus Ruggerio has re-joined the club. Mitch Howlett also returns to the club after having last played for the Royals in 2015 while Jayden Magro arrives at the club after spending time at High Wycombe in the amateurs.
- Tarir Bayok has signed with the Royals after spending two seasons at the West Coast Eagles as a Categroy "B" rookie, defender Kyle Anderson has re-signed for another season while ruckman Ajang Ajang has signed for a further two seasons.
- The WAFL will use the same fixturing program as the AFL to compose the 2019 fixture with all 10 clubs to play each twice however the WAFL remains undecided on whether to include two or three byes next season. One bye will be the State League game against the SANFL, likely to be played as a curtain raiser match at Perth Stadium while the remaining bye(s) could be included as split rounds during the season. At this stage, the Grand Final looks set to be played on Sunday, 22 September 2019 which will not be part of the Queen's Birthday long weekend in WA.
- West Coast Eagles' WAFL team will have the option of "buying back" home games from the other nine WAFL clubs should they wish to. The Eagles' WAFL side is scheduled to play all of its matches as away game but can play matches at home provided the club affected agrees.
- West Perth looks set to lose a number of players for next season with Luke Meadows set to play interstate should he not be picked up in the upcoming AFL national or rookie drafts later this month. SANFL club North Adelaide leads the race for the signature of Meadows with Hawthorn's VFL affiliate Box Hill, also interested. Kody Manning is in talks with East Fremantle and East Perth about a potential move while midfelder/tagger Dean Munns is in discussions with Perth about becoming a Demon.
- Delisted Fremantle player Luke Strnadica is being chased by three WAFL clubs, former club East Fremantle leads the chase for Strnadica's signature with East Perth and Subiaco also interested. The Sharks look set to lose Jonathon Marsh who is moving back to Victoria and could sign with a VFL club.
- South Fremantle has lost a further two players to retirement with goalsneak Cory Dell'Olio and midfielding Jarrod Parry deciding to hang up the boots. The Bulldogs have regained the services of Kade Stewart who returns to the club from Katanning after a stint with Hawthorn in the AFL. Souths have also signed midfielders Jye Depane and Jarrod Salmeri.
- Claremont has re-signed leading goalkicker Tom Lee for 2019 with former West Coast Eagle Anton Hamp also committing to the Tigers for next season. Harry McCracken and Tom Ledger will also be at the Tigers again in 2019.
