News Eight team mega deal (as reported in The Age)

This whole trade business is pure theatre.

London to a brick, most of the big trades were finalised today - or even last week - but will be held back until the last 30 minutes tomorrow. Sure, they let a number of minor trades go down to tease the mob, but all the big ones are being saved for The Grand Finale.

There will be high tensions as each club will file in and be interviewed entering and exiting the signing ceremony. Foxsports will have a big screen graphic (incorporating images of dominoes) - mysteriously already prepared before the trades are announced - which will play out as the drama unfolds.

We all know the AFL loves to wring every drop of publicity/cash out of anything it can and is quite prone to a little manipulation here and there if it suits its agenda.

OP updated. Good catch :)

It sounds like it's possible for Brisbane to break out of the deal and do the bits they need to do separately, but they seem to simultaneously not want to pay for Neale and then also demand more for Beams  It's probably easier for everyone if it all goes through together, since all the different bits are dependent on each other to a large extent. I bet the AFL would love it too just for the theatre of it and the amount of mileage they'd get out of it on the TV finale thing.

From a Brisbane standpoint, each year with Beams, even if only one more year, allows McLuggage, Berry and the like to Bridge that gap to becoming cornerstones of our midfield. He is a gun and while not having as much value as Lachie Neale because of his age alone, he is worth overs for us to keep. It is not what he is worth to Collingwood that matters to Brisbane but his value to us. That’s why you have to have it be worthwhile. The absolute preference is he stays.

Somehow Freo will end up with the worst out of this.

That's how this always plays out.

while GC is involved you can’t possibly lose. Every Vic team is treating them as some sort of Northern academy

But, the big question is what do the Swans get back for Newman.... bearing in mind we prefer BBQ shapes rather than Twisties

This is why the AFL need to do a 24 hour or 48 hour trade period and televise it.

Every year the trade period is fantastic, trades come out of nowhere and completely unpredictable even to the media. This year has been a snoozefest, every trade has been scripted and even today most of the deals that will go down have been talked about for since it started. Most if not all of the deals are done, but the clubs will wait till the last minute just so the AFL gets maximum coverage.

Even the garbage Freo pull out of Hogan trade is like a scene from a WWE event, no doubt today a deal will get done and everything that happened on Thursday was just a publicity stunt

You sound like the media complaining it goes for too long. SEN harp on it every year then they start talking about trades a month before it begins - which one is it? If its too long why start talking a month in advance?

Same with general public complaing about it being too long, why? Who cares how long it takes, just look at the AFL website once or twice a day to see what has happened. Why the rush?

Because I am a member of the general public? Also pretty sure I covered in my post why I think it's too long
