Standout

Round 16, 2018 (versus Bulldogs): 18 disposals, six marks and four goals was a very solid contribution during a 63 point drubbing of the Bulldogs as the Hawks rebounded from a loss to the Giants the previous week.

Shocker

Round 1, 2018 (versus Collingwood): Against the eventual grand finallist, in a game the Hawks controlled from start to finish, Roughead's contribution was subdued, with just 10 disposals and a goal.

Rough tried hard all year, was very up and down as a forward but was also frequently double and triple teamed.

His class still showed based on how often his touches ended in goals and for people wondering why Lynch got so much money from Richmond you just have to think about the fact that Rough outperformed over half the KPFs in the league this year

Rough has slowed down, but we did not help him with our delivery. He's still a 50 goal a season forward if we get our delivery right and if other forwards can step up. He did spud up a few simple marks and kicks at times there, but still very valuable.

At some stages he needs to realize he's not playing with the calibre of players that he was previously and adjust his his delivery by hand and foot to potentially be a bit softer.

Not going to sugarcoat it, he's cooked but has earned the right get stay long enough to get burnt.

Did have a few games where he contributed well and impacted on ball a little bit. But his biggest weapons strength, leap, agility, pressure and ground ball work for a big guy have fallen away. Ideally he can get a little bit of heat taken off him by 2 of gunston, lewis, nash, shoey and obrien playing well up forward.

Every time he was up and about it transformed the look of the team.

He didn't have a great year by his standards, but was solid and captained the team to a top 4 finish. By all reports he grabbed a few by the scruff of the neck after that second Brisbane loss, leading to a big turnaround in the team's form. Love the Rough.

I thought he struggled badly all year, let us down in key moments on numerous occasions and demonstrated little on-field leadership. However he took the opposition's best defender every week, had very little support from our other KPFs, suffered from poor midfield delivery, and was plainly asked to fill a role which his body is no longer suited for.

Roughy could well be flourishing as a 2nd or 3rd tall if only we had another gorilla forward or two up there to take the heat off him, but without one I can't see his body holding up much longer than next year. From the outside it also looks as though the captaincy has been a burden he has shouldered reluctantly and not terribly effectively, at least with regards to his on-field efforts to inspire the team which have been extremely poor by Hawthorn captaincy standards, and made to seem even worse given the proceeding captain was one of our best ever.

This is why I suggested grabbing someone like Casboult to take some of the load off his shoulders. I'll be greatly disheartened if he's asked to perform the same role next year and retains he captaincy, I really think he'd benefit from less responsibility at this point.

Think thats optimistic... Dont think the great man will make that mark again personally.

Still our best option as a key forward which says more about the state of our list than it does how about how good Rough Currently is. He always tries hard but is now 32/33 coupled with all the treatment he has been through and his body simply doesn't have as much strength or allow many 2nd follow up efforts in the contest.

It seems that Rough has been unable to regain his best form since returning from his successful immunotherapy treatment, but he has still been serviceable. He has not been helped by the high ball bombed into the forward line as contested marking has never been his forte and the best we can expect now is that he will bring it to ground. 2019 will probably determine whether Rough hangs up the boots and whether the addition of A graders like Wingard and Scully will improve the quality of our forward line entries and ability to convert. Better delivery will certainly help him regain form and confidence if his body is still up to AFL football.
He is a champion of our club and a great human being. Best of luck Rough.
