Shepparton East continues to search for a home in one of the region’s leagues
By Lauren Bordin

Three of the region’s football fixtures have been released and Shepparton East has not featured on one but a meeting last night between the club, AFL Goulburn Murray and AFL Victoria was hoped to help shed light on the best path forward.

The Goulburn Valley, Murray and Picola District leagues have released fixtures for next season and the Kyabram District competition is taking the same 14 clubs into next year.

However, AFL GM region general manager Jamie Macri said he was confident of finding a place for the Eagles.

‘‘We tried to get the second tier in the Murray league, but that didn’t go ahead and then Kyabram got a nine to five vote, but it needed 10 to four to go ahead (with the KDFNL’s plan for a competition to be split into two equally weighted competitions),’’ he said.

‘‘We’ll find them a home, but it’s just a matter of where’s its going to be.

‘‘We just really want to find Shepp East a home to suit them and support them to find a home so they’re looked after, it’s a really unfortunate situation what’s happened.’’

Along with Katandra, Tungamah and Dookie United, Shepparton East chose to leave the Picola District league at the end of last year when the league chose not to affiliate with the AFL.

United joined the Kyabram District league, while the Kats, Bears and Eagles headed the way of the Murray league as it best provided for all its netball grades, despite being an increase standard of competition.

With the Picola District league choosing to re-link with the AFL, Shepparton East decided to apply to rejoin the competition.

But Macri said the club inadvertently missed the transfer deadline to return to the Picola league, applying after the competition officially signed on with the AFL on November 1, with the deadline for requests falling a day prior on October 31.

I am on the look out for some old copies of 'The Circle', the footy record from the old Echuca Football League, which disbanded around 1989 and its past member clubs included Mathoura.

Home and away or finals editions are fine. I would prefer hard copies but scans are fine as well.

Please message me if you can assist.
