I heard Bernie McCarthy Of North Melbourne, passed away recently.
I had it confirmed Saturday and have this link from NM.

Was an uncle of the late Jon McCarthy I believe? (Though by age theres quite a bit of a gap, always thought a great uncle fitted the years gap. I’m sure someone will set that straight).

AustralianFootball.com has him as the uncle of John McCarthy (it doesn't have the DOD recorded for Bernie McCarthy): https://australianfootball.com/players/player/bernie+mccarthy/9411

This article, from 2008, lists John as being Shane's son, so uncle is correct.
Always good to hear from the Pope.

(There was also a Pope in Prison Break the series; there was a pope in Animal Kingdom the movie.)

Ian Thorogood passed away either yesterday or today (based on your interpretation of this). MFC 1957-1962 (three flags) + coach of Waverley, assistant coach at South Melbourne and senior coach at Carlton.
Yes Ian passed away I believe 19/3.

I think it would be interesting to know how many men from the last Melbourne premiership are still alive.
As long as AustralianFootball.com is up to date on this, a rather surprising 16/20 is the answer. Neil Crompton, Bob 'Tassie' Johnson, Peter McLean and Don Williams are those who have died.

Hovering the mouse over the names of the Melbourne players (one by one) here gives the same result.

Richmond's Havel Rowe. The club's oldest living B+F winner, and the last surviving teammate from Dyer's last game

FYI Havel Rowe's real first name is Stuart. I always thought it was spelt Stewart, but clearly his family notice (as well as the funeral card) shows Stuart.
Can't remember who our wikipedia fixer dude is, but someone will need to change Havel's first name spelling here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havel_Rowe

At the time of Geelong's flag in 2007, i think around 15-16 of the '51-52 era Premiership players were still alive, when Geoff Williams the youngest would have been near 75 y/o. Those ranks have thinned out quite a lot now sadly as time marches on. Might be a similar thing with St.Kilda's '66 side, and would have been interesting to see how many of the Dog's '54 side survived at the time of their 2016 Flag.

I've said it on other threads but i am still kind of chuffed at the fact that Geelong's oldest Premiership player at the time of the '07 Flag was the then 96 y/o Joe Sellwood....and the youngest in the '07 flag was 19 y/o Joel Selwood of course...same letters in the combined name. Joe passed away later in 2007, 70 years after his '37 triumph.

Eight of these players were alive at the time of the club's 2016 flag win: Herb Henderson, Jim Gallagher, Don Ross, Doug Reynolds, Peter Box, Ron Stockman, Harvey Stevens and Angus Abbey - Box and Stevens have died since the Bulldogs' big day.
