Ah man, Leroy is back.

Fun story, played against him in Under 13s (I was playing for Narrogin Eagles before they merged with Towns), he played CHF and I held him to two goals only in a really good performance

He kicked two in five minutes, I got dragged and came back to play back pocket instead of CHB for the rest of the game

Haha love that spoiler :tearsofjoy:
I arrived in Narrogin the year after the merger so missed the whole Towns vs Railways/Eagles rivalry playing for the Narrogin Hawks. Was definitely a much larger contingent of Towns people at the Narrogin Hawks, I reckon of the 30 kids we had in our team 5-6 were ex-Eagles and the rest were ex-Towns.
I play for Brookton-Pingelly now anyway so not involved with the Hawks anymore.

I have heard that a new football book is coming out in the next few weeks.

It is a history of football in WA between 1885 and 1945, with information on over 200 competitions that played throughout the state, as well as an A-Z list of clubs, an A-Z list of premiers and a collection of stories from that era.

Good to see as there is very little in the way of football history books from WA outside of the WAFL and WAFL clubs and that the state's early football history will be preserved.

Does anyone have any update on the situation in the Upper Great Southern?

How many clubs have enough players for B Grade?

Anyone have any thoughts on how the competition will look over the next couple of years - clubs merging or folding or if Brookton-Pingelly will be back next year?

Been a couple of years since I've been involved in UGSFL but most of my time B Grade teams from all clubs were made up of atleast a few top ups from the colts.

As for Brookton-Pingelly it would be a massive loss if they were to never make it back on the field. 2 great grounds and always seem to produce high quality juniors.

Competition has been remarkably stable since the mid 00s when the two Narrogin clubs merged and West Arthur folded so hopefully it can remain as an 8 team comp going forward.

So what is the go?

The role of the Goldfields in the game nationally has always interested me & this book must cover it through to the 1920s.
Plenty of players from then have fed the WAFL & the VFL (e.g Alec Epis) & more recently the AFL (Eddie Betts/Dom Sheed).

See here: Goldfields all-star footy players from all eras
For example: Jack Regan Kalgoorlie City player and coach 1947-49, 196-game Collingwood legend, some say the greatest full-back ever.

Got this book today. Seriously impressive. Will take me a while to get through, and was just lamenting to Mortlock that my holidays are about to end just as the book arrived...

Might also have to keep Google Earth open as I read it too...having never been west of Whyalla, I've never heard of 90% of these places...!

Should be going to the printers next week or the week after.

There is a picture of the Railways 1919 premiership team in there with a number of future WAFL and VFL players in the team. The team mascot in the picture was Ted Tyson.

Tell us how to get a copy.
Tried all good outlets here in the Latrobe Valley, no luck ....

There were always rumours of Kukerin-Dumbleyung leaving to play elsewhere since they couldn't compete with Williams/Boddington for players and now they can't find a coach. Would hate to see them leave.

Their other options would be Ongerup, Avon or Eastern Districts. A lot of travel there.

Ongerup probably the closest but I am sure they would stick it out in the UGS for as long as they could.

West Arthur folded? Damn. That's both clubs I played for in the UGSFL gone. :sadv1:

Narrogin Railways wore red and black vertical stripes up until 1992 when they renamed to Narrogin Eagles, who used a WCE wings style to start with before a few changes than merging with Towns to become Hawks

Narrogin Towns in the early day was a yellow sash on a maroon base. In later years they had a lion logo across the chest and used a few other colours, silver in particular

West Arthur was a red base with a royal blue sash.

The others were before my time.
