Autopsy Swans vs Dogs Rnd 1 2019

As Skystyler mentioned a few posts ago Why the F...did the umpire call Buddy to play on when he was getting ready for his set shot? He didn't seem to be over the 30 second time limit.

Just brought it up on replay and from the moment he held onto the mark to the point when called to play on, it was 33 seconds ... so technically there, but seems a little harsh.

You might be right, but who are you dumping from our mids to do that?
I think a lot of the issue is initial acceleration - neither Mills nor Heeney help much in that regard - maybe JPK and Heeney swap time in middle/fwd stats is a fair tweak?
Yeah we don't have that burst player out of the middle. That's what is hurting us.

Early days and plenty of opportunity to adjust but adjust we must.

It’s not adjust or bust so I’m not too fussed, and I trust the brain trust must have it sussed. If we fail to thrust to the upper crust, if our season’s dust, they’ll feel my disgust thus getting cussed by the great nonplussed.

Got in at 4am and managed to avoid the result. Watching that this morning has left me quite depressed. My son is going to discover AFL at the wrong time and my wife refuses to force him to be a Swans supporter. Some crazy notion about let him choose. I said you can have everything else movies, music whatever I just want him to follow the Swans. It's a lonely supporting life out of Brisbane with no Swan mates.

Reid showed glimpses of his value
Franklin proved he indeed can play with limited preperation. Wasn't a great night with his boot but he did enough to prove his selection was right. That tackle.
Very similar theme of the teams that have one out the back of a stoppage we don't seem to be quick enough to combat.
Thought McVeigh's touch or decision making was pretty good.
Melican still a bit underdone but performed better than the JLT
Credit to the Swans for making it work for years by losing the clearances but repelling the opposition attack. Fear that the pool of teams, that we can't afford to do that against is getting greater.
Shame we couldn't get this weeks Adelaide performance no doubt they will be better prepared for round 2
Don't push your son. Just get him to watch some games with you. He'll come around. This is coming from a Victorian swans supporter living in WA with 4 kids under nine. :)

I'm only commenting because I agree with mikey that making that booing about race is damaging to everyone involved. But people booing Aliir was 100% about him being involved in a few contentious decisions deep in your backline that went against us. There was no booing at all until after that happened. It was even almost limited to the pocket where the decisions happened and the cheer squad area.
So I don't think it's right to blanket statement our crowd as racists. That's not to say there were none, which is the unfortunate reality, as I heard one near my section, but he was promptly told to shut up by a couple of people behind him.

Anyway, good luck for the rest of the year guys.
Boo the umpires you ******* ***********!

That is the burden we have to bear as a club. Forever hard done by.
Honestly though I did think it was pretty even. Some pretty bad calls both way, given and missed. But every clubs supporters think they're a bit hard done by in the end, so I guess it doesn't mean much. 22-22 is pretty indicativ

I don't doubt it. Sadly it's something that is all too common at the footy, and isn't limited to a select few club

Sure thing champ. Just stopped by to back up a claim made by one of your own, just so false information wasn't perpetuated. I'll jog on now. Have a good day.

It's a pretty simple equation. We need to move the ball faster so we can give our forwards more chances to kick goals. See? I could be an AFL coach.

To continue on from last year we got smashed on inside 50 differential again. Played too much in the back half and our transition was slow. But when we got going there was run and carry, players were spreading well to create options and we were able to give our forwards one on one opportunities. Now you can only do as much as your opposition lets you but we have to be willing to take the game on. We might turn the ball over a bit but I don't want to die wondering.

I would very much like to see Mills and Heeney as permanent onballers. Certainly Heeney looked on but the ball wasn't getting to him. The Dogs just had quick and clean hands around the clearances and we've looked very slow and disorganised in that area for awhile now. Sinclair did his job and had the most hitouts to advantage for the round but I think our setup or hand skills around clearances are lacking which is a worry for a team game built on clearances.

Early days and plenty of opportunity to adjust but adjust we must.

Best post I have read in ages. I agree with all of it.

Thanks. Even Horse agrees with me. I read his interview today. He mentioned that we got killed in ground balls and I think this above everything is what I'm seeing as one of our major problems. In clearances, in general play we seem to get outworked constantly when the ball is on the ground and in contention. Teams like GWS and the Dogs now are so kick to the ball and with their hands to get it clear of the contest. We are simply poor in contested possessions when we used to be the kings and it's a major reason our midfield is getting worked over, not just simply leg speed.

and it is one of the reasons I think we need to stick Mills and Heeney in there and leave them there, perhaps even try Clarke there too sometimes since he was a very good clearance player as a junior. We have to start winning the ball in the guts.

At least we could pick him safe in the knowledge he couldn't play worse. We've all had days like that I suppose. I like him as a JPK/Parker replacement but not in the same side tbh. Yeah he's more of a forward, but can go in there too.
But I think he'll make way for KJ even if KJ is only up to a 70% tog effort. We just need a bit more variety in the mids - KJ has the ability to add that. Hope we see a vintage game from him - we might need it to beat the Crows.

KJ was a liability last year. Only Hanners rivalled him as a butcher of the ball. He's had limited pre-season and game time against Canberra. He's in the open only in case of emergency cabinet.

In the meantime he has an important role in tutoring our young NEAFL players.

Read the tap and see ball get ball. I think we almost need two teams of specialist mids, one for centre bounces and one for Round the ground stoppages. JPK, for example is still a beast at stoppages but not so much in the centre. There's still be one or two mids who could do both- eg George and Heeney.

Paps could do centre bounces and clearances on the fwd line.

Yeah you need to be quicker in the square now.
You could see it with Freo. Ye goods.
They were so much faster moving the ball on than Norf yesterday

Precisely. Watching Coniglio, Taranto and others towel us up in centre clearances against the Dopers and us in JLT was instructive as well. it was. Heppell was similarly exposed as JPK in centre clearances but better at stoppages.

I may have said it before but it never ceases to amaze me, for a freakishly-talented, once-in-a-generation footballer with so many jaw-dropping skills in so many ways, Buddy is incredibly ordinary overhead.

Doesn't help when your getting it put on top of your head by way of mongrel helicopter, giving every ****k in the ground time to run in to join the already overcrowded marking pack that is going to collapse on top of him.

What.......with the outdated gameplan you whinge about.

Ironically the best service Buddy got all night was from a first gamer in Blakey. He played pretty deep probably due to limited prep and was battling packs most of the night as you point out.

Need some pro-active mids. I'd love to see Hewett, Heeney, Florent and Jones start on the ball from the get-go on Friday night.
