Looking to attend some TAC Cup games this year, so I'm going to just use this thread as a general space to keep player notes and ratings etc, with the aim of launching a Blog.

Below is my first summary for Round 1, for the Sandringham v Calder match as RSEA Oval.

Sandringham v Calder 24/03/2019

Match Summary

Massive 109 point win to Sandy, dominating all game and locking their ball in their attacking half for the vast majority of the contest. Their midfield in particular was strong, with big performances from Byrnes, Maginness and Hanranhan. Calder had some trouble rebounding from defense, and were fumbly and indecisive in bringing the ball out, which Sandringham didn’t quite capitalise on.

Notable Sandringham Players

Byrnes: Had a blistering first quarter, collecting 9 possessions and setting up play via well-timed handballs out of congestion. Had some nice opportunities to use his pace and link up off half-back and through the centre square. Has good understanding between his teammates, and used Maginness on a number of occasions. Felt his kicking was off overall. Executed a couple of nice passes, but also missed a few easy ones in the first quarter. Stylistically he reminds me of Devon Smith; a smaller mid with smarts in the contest, clean hands and pace. Also seems capable playing forward. Moved the ball quickly overall, which allowed Sandringham to enter their 50 quickly. Some great sweeping handballs to clear the pace in the last quarter – feel his vision and anticipation is of a relatively high level.

Maginness: BOG for mine. Not as productive as Byrne in Q1, but strong throughout the game, linking up strongly and providing an outlet at the stoppages. Easily the best player in the second half, executing some nice handballs and tackled well. Had a number of clearances, and generally used it well. Looked reasonably tall on the ground, but isn’t particularly tall. Gets his hands free very well, which is characteristic of taller midfielders.

Dean: Kicked 5, due mainly to the supply from the midfield, but positioned himself well and got to some difficult balls coming in. Took his opportunities, but wasn’t overly productive, and wasn’t used as a target coming up the ground.

Worrell: Indifferent game. Clearly has the nous, and was impressed by many aspects of his play, but was caught on 2 or 3 occasions. Really liked his kicking at times. His defensive intent was great, and looked to lay a shepherd and block, which noticeable. Also was quick to react after making a mistake, and as alluded to, he made a few in the first game. Certainly a player to watch.

Others: Liked McAsey’s hands, Butler had a consistent game rotating through the midfield and off half-forward, Hanrahan was untidy at times but heavily involved in the play.

Notable Calder Players

Mott: Productive and generally involved in the contest, often to no avail. Delivered into 50 precisely, and was used as a link-up option coming out of defence. Would like to see how he progresses over the rest of the season.

Ramsay: Thought he was fantastic in a team that was well beaten. Impressive goal on the run, to which he ran hard past a player and executed from an acute angle. Looks to have nice kicking skills, and really liked a nice switch across the ground he made which really opened the field up. Looks to have the ability to play both off half-back and on a wing.

Great summaries there, think you might have Hanrahan and Butler confused, they both had the other players numbers with Hanrahan the forward/mid and Butler the running defender.

Thanks for clearing that up. Thought Hanrahan was impressive if he was 15.
