So 600kms and 9 hours later I'm feeling pretty disillusioned.
We weren't beaten by a better team, we were beaten by a team that was prepared to work harder.

Some significant lack of composure from players normally not lacking, looking at you TT as the chief culprit
Hately was a real highlight, a bit nervy in the first but worked into his debut game very well.
Daniels worked his butt off
Lachie was Lachie
At one point Mumford laid a well timed bump on HH to ensure the ball spilled to Freo when it should have been a simple mark
Too much time spent chipping the ball around, instead of taking the game on, very frequently ending up in turnovers

Onward and upward, down from that game would be hard to manage

Woke up this morning thinking I might think differently. I was wrong.

Still angry over the effort and contested ball.

Wasn't intentional I'm sure but they looked lazy.

Saw Hately interviewed after the game. He had Callan’s number written on his wrist strapping. He wanted to play using our great no. 8 for inspiration. I think he played well.
The others should’ve done the same.
I woke up feeling the same way.
I hope we change the attitude for the Swans. I dislike smug Swans fans.

so some thoughts on the game
Deboar tagged hill because most players comeing back from a concussion play badly and fyfe gets tagged every week and still gets his 30 odd.
Hill however is capable of being shut down and is noted at being the one who sets up those damaging fast breaks.

I felt like freo shut down your style of play down but I cant figure out how, I think they pushed their forwards and half backs up to clog the play.

cox is young but a poor substitute for mccarthy

davis is a very good shutdown defender who specialises in owning the ball drop and knocking forwards out of that area but tabs beat him that department and davis had no answer for that.
Kind of like a reverse pavlich davis is.

missed ward you needed someone who could go head to head with fyfe and allow deboar to go to hill.
Just on that regard the only tagger who ever get on top of fyfe is jarrod berry at Brisbane. fyfe is 192cm and 96kg who is top five in 2km at freo got some good burst pace and leap. jarrod berry is very similar only a bit taller so perhaps develop hatley to go toe to toe with the fyfes bonts and cripps of the world.

You guys miss toby greene.

Poor game overall. We were a few percent off our normal game for the first three quarters. Backs were poor, allowing far too many Freo marks in the F50, and not due to any great Freo play, just our tall guys playing behind and not being urgent to get to the ball. Davis, Haynes & Taylor all poor IMHO. Mids were in a tight contest in those same three quarters, but doing OK - except for their finishing in front of goal. Should have been ahead at half time, and further ahead at 3/4 time. Some of those misses - Taranto, Daniels & Zaccy were real momentum and spirit killers. Throw in some dubious frees (that were entirely one way - our forwards were getting scragged and pulled to the ground without the ball but received nothing) and the boys just dropped their heads in the last when they needed to lift.

Cogs played tough in the contest, but disposal still an issue. Hopper and Taranto were both down today - perhaps a little complacent after last week's superb effort. Hately had a solid debut and can hold his head high with that effort.

Thought the forwards did OK - they contributed all except one goal; ball wasn't coming in greatly to their advantage and the Freo defenders were getting away with a fair amount that our defenders weren't. Our mids missing a number of gettable goals, plus a couple from the forwards (TOJ's poster, Brent's from in front) were important.

A bad loss at home, and really one that got away. We should have won that one. Fingers crossed for Davis; the description of Corr's NEAFL performance wasn't hugely comforting, and I don't rate Keeffe that much.
Corr may have done a good job when the camera wasnt on him with some good comments on the NEAFL report, so not all doom and gloom.

Aidan Corr – 18 disposals and six marks
“He played on a really good player in Josh Corbett and absolutely smashed him deep inside fifty, didn’t give him space to breathe so he had to push up the ground to try and chase a bit of the ball. It was good to see Aidan out there; he played his first full game in his third game of the year and it was good to see him get through the game.”

Marks I50 stats are embarrassing. And I don't know what words to use to describe using your best tagger on B Hill instead of Fyffe.

On to next week.
To be fair Fyfe had a lot of contested ball so it is hard to see what a tagger would do anyhow? How many times did Fyfe beat 2 or 3 giants players getting the ball? He is the best player in the game IMO.
