Opinion Best team "on paper" of Geelong footballers YOU have seen play

As I recall Ayres didn't have any defenders at all.

What's irrational about being critical of a coach who can't get the team to perform in finals? That's after five top 4 finishes in seven years? And after bringing in more top-ups than Ayres ever did?

There's also nothing irrational about being critical of some of the worst tactical blunders - in finals - that I've ever seen.
I agree, not irrational at all. Some things are for sure IMO, like 2011 wasn't his flag, discounting his H&A record etc.
Like all things it probably ends up somewhere around the middle.
Both missing the point and both wrong for the same reason, like most of the irrational criticisms of "Scott" personally; Ayres was "the coach" and responsible personally for "coaching" mistakes, "Scott" isn't and isn't.

Surely if Scomo can be held responsible for the bush fires Scott is responsible for Partridges points.

Bill Ryan at CHF could take a screamer of a mark - i think he also represented Victoria and Peter Walker was a very reliable CHB

The old Ryan and Walker - mention those 2 at one point in the 1960s - and it put the fear of god into everyone

I understand that it's spreading the load between two teams, but my brain doesn't comprehend how Ablett senior can be in any kind of "Team B".

First one picked in any Geelong team for me.
Exactly - spreading the talent, of which there is plenty.
Wanted him FF.
Team A had Wade.
Nothing more.
GAS is my # 1 player of all time, not just Geelong.
My point was that there's not much between A & B.

Maybe switch GAS into team A and Wade into B?

When you think of it it's disappointing to only look back on just one flag in the 60's but it was a great time to follow the Cats they are truly a value for money Club.

Here’s my best team of maligned Geelong footballers:

B: Jed Bews, Darcy, McCrabb
HB Murdoch, Schulze, Thurlow
C: Parsons, Motlop, Tenace
HF: Bizzell, Mensch, Smedts
F: Varcoe, Kingsley, Stanley
R: Mark Blake, Cam Guthrie, Spriggs
I/C: GHS, Zach Guthrie, Byrnes, Henderson
Fairly recent list..... No issues with the choices, although some could feel a little aggrieved.
Boy, we could fill another couple of teams if you troll back another ten or 20 years!

B scarlett, ORielly, Bews.
HB enright, taylor, stewart
W riccardi, couch, Colbert
Hf chapman, stoneham, g ablett
F SJohnson, Hawkins, g ablett jnr
R. Ottens, dangerfield, g,hocking.
Inter. Bourke, selwood, bartel, p. Lynch.

Emergencies from. Harley, graham, bruns, bairstow, motlop, brownless, corey.

Whilst technically I saw turner and bos play I was too young and cant remember much about them.

Privileged to have seen the best of Polly and the champions of the 60's.
Makes it pleasantly tough. Leaving out any triple premiership immortal feels sacreligious.
I can seriously say, I loved every one of these players.
Hence,
Team 1
FB: Ian Nankervis , Ben Graham, Matt Scarlett
HB: Denis Marshall, Peter Walker, Mark Bos
C: Mike Turner , Greg Williams, Jimmy Bartel
HF: Steve Johnson, Cam Mooney, John Sharrock
FF: Gary Ablett jnr , Doug Wade, Paul Chapman
R: Polly Farmer, Garry Hocking, Billy Goggin
I/C John Newman, Cameron Ling, Neville Bruns, Ken Hinkley

Emer: Peter Featherby, Paul Lynch, Ken Newland, Jack Hawkins

Team 1A

R: Brad Ottens, Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood
I/C: Darren Milburn, David Wojcinski, Tom Hawkins, James Kelly

Forgot about O'Reilly. Was close to the best full back in the league the year before he left.
Sort of forgot how good Colbert was too a couple of years before he took off.

Began watching in 1992, in fact the GF was the first game i remember that strangely got me hooked forever...

FB Scarlett Taylor Stewart
HB Enright McGrath Milburn
C Riccardi Bartel Wocjinski
HF Johnson Hawkins Ablett jnr
FF Chapman Ablett snr Burns
R Ottens Dangerfield Hocking

As if still lining up from 10 metres out, dead in front, Peter Johnston seems to be missing here...

That's a very good maligned team. My throat feels sore from booing just looking at it.
You forgot Clarke though. Has to be in there. Same with Billy. He was bagged so so much. Even when he was good actually.
That team would actually win games
Very balanced.
