It’s going to be at its worst in Winter. We aren’t in Winter yet it’s still relatively warm. If we need to shut schools let’s wait till then

Absolutely not.

If you wait until winter and the seasonal illnesses are at their 'absolute worst' before implementing containment strategies then you are guaranteed to miss the window of opportunity containment.

The spread of COVID-19 needs to be prevented starting immediately, with a specific focus on slowing it down BEFORE winter, not during or after.

We are already on track to match the circumstances of the worst-effected countries and I can tell you now, working in the health industry, we are legitimately preparing for a horrendous situation the like of which I have not seen in my entire 11 years in the industry.

wow an entire 11 years. But we are in for a rough 6 months

We just had our 6th death, an 86 year old in NSW. To go with the 95 year old a couple of days ago

We have a current average age of death at 85.2, on track so smash Italys record of 80. This panic really is insane

So the 5000+ doctors, surgeons, specialists etc who have signed an open letter to the Government warning of the medical system being overloaded, over capacity and ill-equipped to meet treatment of CV should infections increase are.. what.. insane? panicking? Even after consulting with their Italian colleagues?

Perhaps you should read this thread and listen to the doctors interview on the ABC yesterday.

I mean these people are on the frontline - surely they are in a better position than anyone to make a judgement. But then again you have googled a couple of statistics..

We aren't Europe...we aren't playing games in Italy with 31,000 cases plus.

I repeat, calm down, lets not panic, lets get through this together. The government has 100's of experts they know what they are doing!

The Italian healthcare system is as good or better than ours.

Our current trajectory has us on par with Italy, meaning our situation is likely to deteriorate in a similar manner.

Healthcare system is screaming but the Government is running the show. Big problem!

That is possibly the overriding factor. They can delay this for 2 weeks and then they have another 2 weeks to make a call rather than rushing a call now.
Yeah, I figure that's the case in Victoria anyway. They finish in a week and a half, so they probably want to just get to the term finish line and then take the holidays to make the call. Other states finish their terms a week or two later, though.

Hit this outta the ballpark from start to finish. Prescient post.
So your fine with all those AFL staff and club staff that are going to be sacked over the next few months? Because office staff and physio's and receptionists are SOO well paid, they'll be fine.

There is no perfect situation until the vaccine comes through. Everything is just a patch job until that case. The travel bans should have come in December though.

Gives them about 4 weeks or so to make a call. Talk to every sector and come up with a compromise

Agreed, and the pledge to perform 7,000 cases of elective surgery is utterly laughable!

More surgery means more unnecessary consultations and contacts in rooms that could be used as ICU overflow.

Enough proactive measures could have stifled it to such an extent that it was effectively eliminated from the country. Close the borders early enough and lock things down while cases recover/could transmit it, and it may have been curtailed. While some measures have been taken, and likely will be taken, it's probably too late now to achieve the same results.

True but not all surgery can be put off though.

Correct.
Hence why restrictions are necessary to prevent lower risk groups especially young people (with the disease but usually less symptomatic or aware but highly transmissible) from passing to higher risk groups.

For how long? 1 year? 3 years? Forever?

True but not all surgery can be put off though.

The plan in place, when (not if) this gets worse, is to suspend ALL elective surgery except Category 1. Emergency surgery will need to continue.

It gets harder though because many of our supplies and medicines are manufactured overseas!

Surely the message from international experience is act strongly and early. Delays = much larger problem.

However, most countries including Oz, think they are "exceptions to the rule".

Flabbergasting.

Yep I know my brother is a doctor, it’s not a situation that’s easy. Can’t win.

will be taken out of AFL's hands. i think it will be announced very shortly that ALL sporting is cancelled.
It's an industry. It's an industry with a very low probability of contributing much to the spread of disease. ie, Wether AFL plays or not will have almost zero affect on how this disease looks in a month.

There are many other industries that will have a much bigger impact than footy, and many of those industries are either not essential in the short term, or only essential in part.

What would the rationale be for forcing the AFL to close its doors, but not these other industries.

I find it amazing the number of people who are still going to work, yet are outraged that AFL players still want to.

Walk down your street telling everybody they shouldn't go to work, and they should take a pay cut for the good of their employer, and they should do it for an indefinite period, likely to be months.

See how you go.
