Mahoney's very good at fixing problems and making things run smoothly. He gets things done without fuss, manages the media well, supports his coach, doesn't make mistakes.

The reason he's been demoted at Melbourne are largely due to Pert wanting to shake things up and promote his mate Al Richardson and also because too many others at the top of the chain just haven't done their job well enough - the coach, the recruiter, the list manager (in terms of players targeted not the contracts) etc.

If you have the right coach, the right recruiting and a stable board Josh will do good things.

Don't forget he took charge of Melbourne when they were at rock bottom - genuinely the worst team since Fitzroy, navigated the Roos-Goodwin handover and did a lot of good building Melbourne up to a team that made a prelim. Things have slipped at the Dees since - coaching, recruiting, fitness staff. But within the constraints of the AFL system (especially at a small club like the Dees) he's managed to turnover some of the coaching, land Darren Burgess to lead the fitness team and made moves to fix the list.

Is he a football visionary who can elevate a program by being ahead of the curve - no. But he's a professional. You could have (and have previously) done a lot worse. He'll be better second time around and with a club with more resources. Every club who doesn't have a gun coach or a Balme type (a very short list) wants the big name who will come in and complete fix things. That's very hard to find. Mahoney will do his job and put others in a position to do theirs, that's about all you can ask for.

Well that's a let down.
Think Collingwood may be a step ahead of us in the chase for a GM. There's a reason why they have appointed 2 internals on an interim basis as cover.

Steven trigg, jesus. We really going for c grade options.

I've never heard such a terrible slur against C-grade options before.

If your people looked at him, fire those people.

Not melty enough. Please correct.

So you are saying it will be a disaster?
Haha no. He'll be fine regardless. Obviously 2019 was a disaster but by and large Melbourne have been very steady under his leadership. He's low ceiling but low floor. So no matter what he'll get good contracts signed for players, he'll comply with AFL rules and regulations, he'll avoid drama in the media, he'll fix problems when they need to be fixed - but possibly not ahead of time.

It's just it's the board, CEO and then Coach who really shape a club IMO. The number of footy administrators who can really make a difference is probably Balme, David Noble and Chris Davies at Port. Possibly Simon Lethlean because he had such an advantage of AFL knowledge coming in to the Saints. Most of the others who do a good job are due to the fact they work at good stable and smart clubs.

Well lucky for us we have an untrustworthy board, an idiot of a ceo and an unproven coach.

Dear god no
I mean he isn't a "bad" appointment per se. It's just that he's uninspiring. Boring. Maintains the status quo.
