That is the perfect example of why we need severe tyre degredation when going beyond "the limits"- gotta have multiple strategies at least considered for this sport to be half decent.

If the hards just get them through 40+ laps with no worries, this race would have been insanely different (ie boring as batshit).

But with degredation being so large that the planned "tyre managemen for all" went out the window, instead we got an epic finish due to different strategies both being very close in balance

it's slightly amusing and sad that a 7 time world champ seemingly cant dictate strategy changes. i get that the team has much more info, but surely sometimes you have to just say yeah, maybe the driver is right.

He’d be at least 5 places lower I reckon if he 2 stopped

No doubt and this isn't meant as any sort of conspiracy theory against Norrish who has had Daniel's measure so far, but purely as a hindsight call what looked like an undercut at the time just ended up putting Ricciardo on older tires for too long against too many when it ended up being a one stop race.

* But a good race and a good result for McClaren

Checco paying off already

Yep, think this has been slightly glossed over. He was in the dangerous position of being able to spoiler a Mercedes switch to two stoppers. It meant that Hamilton when he was behind simply couldn't gamble with the undercut because he'd also have to pass another Red Bull on track.

I'm one of those that never doubted the Perez switch to be Red Bull's second gunner.

How far back did Norris end up from Max? 60 secs? The gap from the top two teams to the next is still to great. Races are only really interesting when there is rain or a number of safety cars. If it's a clean race, like today, only 4 drivers have any chance of getting on the podium.

too busy watching the race to post.

But that was a good one. With 5 laps to go you didn't know who was going to win - best scenario for any race IMHO.

As far as our Dan Ricciardo goes, his side of the garage playing the short game with the undercut on Gasley (which worked). Norris side of the garage playing the long game of doing the second stint on fresher tyres (worked even better). Dan got very racy and put on some good overtake moves, shows he is getting the feel of the car at last.
