Never been against letting Billings go, but expected he would get us band 1.

His form is not up to it. I would not be unhappy if he stayed, he gets slammed because he is not flashy and his output is underrated however he has stagnated at the Saints.
For his career it would be better to make a break and refresh at a new environment.

I dont think we should offer more than we have. If he 600k well we get a Crouch like dp for him.
Que Sera Sera.

If he was a pick in the 20s and on $400k everyone would be happy with him. He's a GOP with the odd excellent game. He usually leads our BF for about 10 weeks every year before dropping off too. I'd be very happy to keep him but wouldn't be devastated to lose him either.

If Billings is only getting us Band 2 then I'd rather keep him for the 600-ish. If another team wants to better that by enough to make him leave then so be it.

If he stays, we should play him as a forward more and see if he can't give us another avenue to goal.

If he leaves, and we are only getting Band 2, then I hope we take that cash and go get Kelly. I still think he will stay at GWS on the crazy $$$ though.

Fingers crossed we nail our first pick. Would be good to have a top shelf talent come through and put some spark in the team.

I've also noticed this too. He's usually a strong starter that fades away as the season gets longer.

I have no idea why.

Surely there’s a Forward/Ruck we can prize out of the dogs for cheap this year?

Shache or Sweet come to mind.

With Naughton, Bruce, Ugle-Hagan, English and Sam Darcy coming in next year. They can’t hold onto all of them. Also if they want to challenge for a flag again next year they might want to keep Martin as the experienced Ruck.

Would absolutely love us to take a punt on Shache or Sweet for a 3rd round pick. If Bruce was worth pick 37 then they should be a 3rd-4th round pick.
They’d be a lot better than having Punter and McKernan.

Billings averages this season:

- 20.1 disposals - not terrible for his role, certainly not great, but acceptable.

- 5.4 contested - lower than any year except his first, not his role right now.

- 2.0 tackles - again lower than any year except his first, again not his role right now.

- 1.1 clearances - very small number, these show that he's completely out of the midfield rotation.

- 6.4 marks - pretty good, those mid/hf marks are important to link up back and front.

- 0.8 goals, 0.7 behinds - decent for a high half-forward, not great. Similar to Zorko, Bobby Hill, Jelly Kelly, Walters, Castagna, Mitch Duncan.

- 3.2 inside 50s - sounds pretty low for a high half-forward, especially given our gameplan is to bomb it forward.

- 1.6 rebound 50s - not getting back much, but not really his role.

He's obviously contributing but his numbers seem low given his class. I guess his injury could be an excuse/explanation?

But the last two weeks in total he's had:

- 31 disposals
- 7 contested
- 5 inside 50s
- 7 clangers
- 1 goal 1 behind
- 0 tackles
- 0 rebounds
- 80%+ time on ground

He's certainly not winning himself a good new deal right now.

Schache's never had more than 4 hitouts in a game, be a big gamble to take him as a forward/ruck.

Not really. Not if it’s for a late pick. A gamble would be sticking with a 31 year old McKernan.

The way I see it, his trade value and contract is not going to be an issue, and it could be a really good moneyball pick. He’s also still only 23 so there’s scope for improvement still.

it’s a low risk-high reward scenario if it pays off.

Playing injured and copped a knee to the head which left him on the ground.

I understand people are judging him against the bont but billings is a very good player and likely to be more valuable as we improve. If he gets a band one offer great otherwise pay up and keep him, talk of accepting a second for billings is just whack imo.

A pick in the twenties or overpaying for someone else, hell you won’t get dunstan for $400 thousand.

Obviously this is all speculation, but could be a rough guide as to what our salary cap looks like. Open For discussion if people think some are very wrong. The Covid payment I heard a few people mention we apparently get back something like 750k this year. Not sure if was true, but put it in. Have us taking 5 players in the national/rookie draft which is probably about right.

However, it does look as though we will have a fair bit of room next year (2mill if the covid payment thing is true, 1.25 if not) even after re-singing Billings, Dunstan and Ross. we might have a crack at a free agent such as King, but I don't think we will be tight for room next year and definitely have the $$$$ to make a move.
In the Hun today that King has a 4 yr contract $750k a year

He's a tall high half forward not a KP according to Bob Murphy. People want him to be something he's not because of his size. Jack Watts was similar, he wasn't a terrible player but suffered from being the wrong size for his ideal role and no-one ever got creative enough to use him properly.

Bailey Williams West Coast, local Peninsula boy @ 199 cm & can play forward.

Does anyone know how Sam Hayes has been going this year? I think he did his knee last year but he was a guy who was predicted to go top 10 in the draft and drifted right out. Port have Lycett and Ladhams as back up with Marshall and Dixon both adequate back up if they want to pay one ruck.

I rate Ladhams but doubt they let him go but Hayes must be gettable as their third stringer.

People are judging him against himself. He literally is having no impact on matches at the moment. It also isn’t fair to say but he can do this and he can do that. What we need is consistency from Billings. Consistent impact. Be reliable.

I literally mark it down for a point when he has a set shot. The surprise is when he nails them. Also, yeah you can use the injury as an excuse. But literally everyone has had an injury in our jumper this year.

for the money he wants and for the money he is currently getting - which is the second highest paid player at the saints. We are getting next to no value. He is an underwhelming footballer at the moment. None of the promise of x-factor that he once had is there.

BTW - if we were still comparing him to bont, then we would be on suicide alert on brownlow night.

Sam Hayes is playing SANFL & has played most of the year.

I don’t agree with murphy at all, I watched this kid at u/18s and he was the most likely imo to succeed at full forward in front of paddy and Boyd.

He was very good on the lead, had strong hands and an accurate uncomplicated kicking action. Imo he was a pretty safe bet but again as a guy who gave you a contest and kicked his two or three a game not as the next plugger. Now they have a full stable of key forwards their trying to reinvent him.

He has managed to get some games at the bulldogs so he’s doing something right but not a player I’d be looking at, maybe a good fit at the pies.

It keeps being said.
If we lose Billings as a free agent and get Kelly as a free agent, we miss out on the compensation pick.

Stav you’re in the camp who want him out the door for an imaginary at this stage first round pick.

The reality is billings was and still is a very good player, the kind you’re not getting for a pick in the twenties at the draft in all probability or for $400 thousand a year. If we let him walk for less than a first we’re mad a will live to regret it.

No amount of undeserved bagging will change that and I hope we wise up and he stays.

Could he end up another Liam Jones ? ex forward now Full back and let go by the dogs same size too

1st among rising stars in Time On Ground % Per Game in 2016 That's Schache's major achievement in AFL

So is there any actual realistic trade targets, or are we still adamant on the Billings for Ben King pipe dream?

Matt Hammelmann from Aspley another one to look at for a later pick in the draft.

25 yr old 198cm forward, 2 time NEAFL Leading goal kicker, and currently averaging 4.3 goals a game in the VFL this season, leading the goal kicking easily.

I have more then stuck up for him and expressed where he excels and is most valuable - just check my posting last week.

fact is, that we aren’t getting a positive output.
Fact is that the money he is on and the all park he wants is overpaying for this level of out put.

Funny story. Billings is my favourite player. My little picture, hasn’t changed since the day I put it there. I’m telling you that he is fools gold. That when the whips are cracking, he isn’t consistently standing up. He isn’t reliable.

you call it imaginary. I’m telling you that what I’ve heard. What’s been reported by Tom Morris and if you don’t want to believe us - there have been other posters on here sharing the same whispers.

we are significantly apart on figures with Billings and have been more some time. If someone met this figure, we get a first rounder.

He's had a few well publicised mental health issues which probably haven't helped him to meet full potential as well. I've been watching him since he was drafted and never seen him make any impact as a KP so far. He might just never make it unfortunately.
