Draft Order and selection summary

Agreed. Long is a very ordinary footballer. Wouldn't surprise me if the Saints now look to trade up the draft order - Brisbane may look at offloading pick 21 for something like 28 + 32.

Unfortunately for clubs like Gold Coast, they have to pay overs to get players to their club.

Their young list needs an physical enforcer like Long. I honestly don't mind this move for the Suns.

There is no sure bet (in fact less so) with picks the Suns have given up for Long anyway.

Setterfield is a way better player. Hopefully Suns want him (if he is leaving). We might get a first rounder back

Yup exactly what I’ve been banging on about, Austin is very conservative & hesitates to clear the dead wood.
Meanwhile opposition teams improve their lists in leaps and bounds possibility.
How do other teams magically restructure their player contracts? Geelong is absolutely loaded with top quality footballers, so how do they do it?

Williams
Saad
Hewett
Cerra
Acres

I'm not sure I'd be describing Nick Austin as conservative. He's been very active since joining the club.

I'm not ITK but can easily answer 2 of this.

MM is out of contract 2023. If he smashes it next season he might get a token minimum chips contract. If not then he's goneski.
Martin's is not an albatross. Hugely front ended to ensure we secured him in the PSD.

If he smashes next season, why would he get a token minimum chips contract, and secondly, why would we offer that, if he smashes it?

We paid a 2nd rounder for him along with a later pick shuffle. How has his value increased during his time with us? If anything, it's decreased significantly. We'd be lucky to get a late 2nd rounder for him.

I'm not saying he's worth a first rounder. I was making a comment about GC giving up a second rounder for Ben Long who I think is a far poorer player then Setters. So was saying if GC went for him we might get a first. Clearly my attempted sarcasm didn't come across 😥

Because we've only gotten 20 odd games out of him in 3 years. He can't get fit, stay fit and we don't really need him. Time to move on.

Reasonable , but opposition teams continue the process of improvement and clearing of unproductive players at every opportunity.
I’m hoping Nick & Michael have something up their sleeves yet.
Very happy with Acres , Cerra and Hewett astute choices , Williams and Saad more sensational and injury prone but ok.

Couple of late trades on day 3, with Ben Long and Tom Berry finding their way to the Suns.

On what planet would Bowes agree to that? At best it’s he agree to take something like 2 or 2.2 mill over 4. There is no reason for him to stretch the same amount he is already owed over a longer period
I dunno, going from a club that never played a final to the reigning premier that have missed finals once in that last decade might be an incentive.
I agree that you’re probably not going to do that to do that to go to a club that hasn’t won a final in 20 years.

But he’s going there anyway? I guess there is a world in which they say they’re only doing it on the condition he agrees to renegotiate and he’s got a choice to make.

There is also Young and Fogarty.
The thing is that the dead wood guys are players like LOB, Cottrell and Kennedy last season.
I think our list is in an awkward spot where we have a lot of guys around the mark who don’t need alot of improvement to make it (Setterfield) or have skill sets like Cuningham that actually suit us.

Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if Setterfield and Dow go and we end up with picks around 10, 28, ~44, 49 and 50 to take to the draft and cap space to move next season if need be

I'd be having a conversation with North Melbourne about Tarryn Thomas.

Unfortunately we don’t have salary cap mobility , some outrageously generous contracts that were structured a few years back to Gov , Williams& Martin are coming back to haunt us and yes all the finalist have improved their lists and will be stronger. Imagine coming up against the Melbourne wing a fit Grundy / Gawn ruck team.
our elites Sam, Charlie & Harry combined restrict our position too.
On the brighter side should Gov , Williams , Martin, Marchy & Cunners stay on the park for half a season together , Baggers Will playing finals 2023.

Williams yes, Gov and Martin were heavily frontloaded and wouldn’t be hurting us now

GC gave up pick 32 for Ben Long and a Future 4th round pick. Saints done incredibly well there

Just send em to Tassie, absolute basket case

I think Saad is a bit more then ok

I actually don’t mind Ben Long as a player but he has periods in seasons where he’s a complete non-event a may as well not be out there.

The Suns have actually good got a decent strike rate of getting mediocre players or former state leaguers to improve. If they’ve got a role in mind for him he could be a handy pick up.
