Great trade period traded 4 firsts for an average to good FF.

Just because you repeat it, doesn’t make it true.

We just traded the equivalent of Pick 5 out over three years. Just accounting for the picks involved.

Ultimately we got two picks back this year to help with our academy selections and did a pick swap back into the second round for 2027 during a compromised draft.

We still have 3 picks within the first three rounds for the next three drafts and we also have 3 contracts past 2028.

Can any one comment on how many list spots we now have and how we'll fill them for example how and where the four academy players might fit in main list Rookie. And then perhaps also how the future picks we have fit in with what's likely from our Academy in the next 2 years. I know some of you are all over it.
Amd attached are the picks we hold this year and next 2 years

3 senior list spots, 2 Cat A rookies and 1 Cat B rookie. Our list is full

My source was right in the end 😅 no WA players in discussions, unexpected player floated (Rowbottom), Swans being confident on getting Curnow all along, recently contracted players being in discussions (contracts signed just last year) and GC never really being interested.

Can add a few more things now.

  • We had chats with Petracca's management, but were priced out.
  • Never spoke with anyone in regards to Oliver
  • Did speak with WCE about trading down for an earlier pick, but got priced out.
  • We spoke with many players in the landscape (mostly defenders/ dynamic forwards), were confident on our midfield for next year. (Apparently this is common for clubs, but we were very proactive this year).
Appreciate all your insights, I looked out for them during my endless scrolling on this thread 😂

Cheers

We still get our academy boys this year and have plenty of time to ensure we do over the next couple of years.

But sure, "mortgaged the next three years" certainly sounds a lot more damning than that.
I’m confident we’ll still be good in the future even losing the 3 first round picks, we have the academy still and there’s always other ways to draft good players, I mean look at Geelong.

Maybe it’s just my naivety as we’ve been a perennial finals contender my whole life but it’s difficult to envision us ever fully bottoming out.

The only thing that could make it worse is if JUH comes good for the Suns

Because we won't be able to trade for whoever he pushes out either.

So we're stuck with this, with zero first rounders and a full to the brim salary cap

This might just be our Tim Kelly moment

For better or worse?

If this is the start of the Cox/Pav trading era then its gotten off to the best start possible.

We improved in 3 positions that were in dire need in 1 trade period along with the ability to at least match late first round-second round bids.
Put on your superman capes. It's Wharfie Time!

Especially in a difficult market like Sydney, faced with fierce competition from league. Maybe the Swans know this as well.

The SCG was rocking during the 2024 QF during the comeback win.

Well.

People wanted a gamble and we have a gamble.

Hopefully Curnow stays fit (along with any key player), keeps form and we win a premiership over the next few otherwise we have mortgaged the future through the Tassie drafts.

Hamstrings ability to trade in future players and pick up kids from the 27 crop.

Gone all in and better hope it comes off.
We are having a crack to win in the next two to three years.
Heeney will be 32 then. Warner may be gone.
So now or never I guess. Academy picks this year if they turn out a success will help us contend in the next era while Errol because the more senior player.

People are reacting to 2027 1st without considering that it's highly likely with Tassie's picks that that's a pick in the 20s at the earliest, possibly late 20s / early 30s after FA compensation.

I hope so.

But same token could completely implode and be pick 2, 4, 6 or 8.

Our rocketing up the ladder or being finalists is not the fait accompli that everyone on the board seems to think (although I am also of the opinion we should be top 8 minimum with the list)

Big risk/big reward

Could have a form slump
Curnow could redo his knee
Heeney could have another foot injury
Mills and Gulden could have a wrestle
Cox's plan may not translate

All can do is watch and see how it goes

Anybody worried about what we gave up in draft capital just needs to take a breath.

Look at Carlton in Rd 23, had zero picks in the first round this year. Fast forward 6 weeks and they Walked away with pick 9, 11 and future firsts. Yes they lost key parts but who know what happens to us in the next 12 to 24 months. Players may want to leave for a variety of reasons and if so we try to extract the best deal we can.

We are in the best possible spot we can ask for right now, as a team we are stronger than we were at 6am today.

Tab has us as 6th favourite for the flag now

Or it might be our Jeremy Cameron moment

Remind me how sad the Cats are?

Cheer up you miserable campaigners. You know come Rd 1, you'll be back here yelling and screaming as passionately as you were before. Win-Lose or draw, we're all just suckers for punishment.
Not sure any of them have factored in a possible claw back when Warner leaves.

I reckon Essendon have taken certain risks and look at where that has got them.

It probably made you switch clubs.
I don't want to switch clubs like you.

If anything Essendon haven’t taken enough.

Geelong a better example

3 firsts for Cameron
First for Bailey Smith
First for Issac Smith

They are more than happy trading out to get something that’s known

I love the draft but at some point you take the chance to win. Let’s be real Hayward and Florent were not winning it with us. One was in the VFL and the other turns up once every 3 weeks
